Ringfort known locally as 'Lísín an Bhrogha' stands in small woodland area, on the SW edge of Bruff town, on the S bank of the Morningstar River with public road to S, which marks the townland boundary with Brackvoan. The site of two castles (LI032-115001-/115002-) lie 100m to E and 110m to NE respectively with Bruff church (LI032-115003-) and graveyard (LI032-115003-) standing 200m to ENE. Annotated ‘Lísín-a-Bhrogha’ on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map where it is depicted as a roughly circular-shaped platform (dims. c. 46m N-S; 42m E-W). The town and parish of Bruff are named after this monument which may indicate that it was the site of a high status residence of a Gaelic chieftain. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded the following details about this monument; 'The name of this Parish is in Irish Brugh na Déise which signifies the Brugh, Burgum or Chief Seat of the Territory of Deisy (Déise Beag) which is the ancient name of the territory in which it is situated. The feature originally called Brogh ls a fort of earth which is situated in the Townland of Bruff in a grove thickly planted with elms, which also extend over the fort itself on the south west bank of the River called the Morning Star and in the immediate vicinity of the Town of Bruff to the west. This fort is called in Irish by the people Lísín a Bhrogha and Lísín Aerach a' Bhrogha, i .e. , the Airy (Little) Fort of the Brugh (Bruff). It consists of a double mound, the lower portion of which is about one hundred and forty four paces [m] in circumference at the base and the upper portion ninety five feet [109m] in diameter at the top. There is a horizontal space of eight feet [2.4m] and in some parts (here the bank of the upper moat is injured) much wider, between the two moats, which are nearly of the same height. The entire height is about twelve feet [3.65m]; in some parts not so much. The entrance to this fort (or moat) is on the eastern side' (OSL Bruff Parish, 36). Monument is obscured today by woodland on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 25/03/2017 and 28/06/2018. Bruff Castle was described in 1840 as follows; ‘the ruins of the old Castle of Bruff, formerly the residence of Sit Henry Hartstonge, and after him of his widow, Lady Hartstonge, are situated on the north bank of the River (Morning Star) immediately to the west of the bridge and near the Church of Bruff. It measures thirty five feet [10.6m] from north to south outside and eighteen and a half feet [5.6m] from east to west. The doorway, which is quadrangular, is placed on the eastern side and is at present (the threshold is raised with stone work) but four feet ten inches [1.47m] high, two feet two inches [0.66m] in width at the top and at the bottom two feet three and a half inches [0.71m]. Over the ground floor there is a stone arch which springs from the ground. The highest part of the walls now remaining is not more than about twenty four feet [7.3m] in height; the greater portion of them is little higher than the first arch. The only place I could measure the thickness of the walls is at the doorway and where the arch springs; here the thickness if three feet [0.9m]. The features on the upper part of the walls are all destroyed. The first of ground floor of this castle is now inhabited by a poor family in the town of Bruff. To the north east of the Castle there is a quadrangular building called the Court [LI032-115002-], which measures twenty seven and a half feet [8.4m] in length on the outside but its breadth could not be easily determined. It is now thatched with straw and its features closed up with stone work’ (O’Flanagan 1929, 36-7). Westropp (1906-7, 170-1) recorded the following details about Bruff Castle located at the S end of the town of Bruff; ''C[astle]. and "Court" marked. 1420 Brugh na nDeisi (O'Huidhrin). The C[astle]. is said to have been built in 1220 by de Lacy. It was an appanage of the Hospital of Aney. 1583 Near Awney C[astle]. "is the place where Burg, alias A Burrough town, was formerly, which was altogether laid waste, long before the rebellion of the Earl (of Desmond), except a house or peel tower of Maughan mac Teige" (Des. R., 4b). Piers Lacy, of Broffe, was in Desmond's rebellion (Fi. 4369). 1600 He held the C[astle]. was defeated by Capt. Slingsby, and Brough C[astle]. garrisoned. Carew describes Lacy and the Knight of Glin as "children of perdition, not to be admitted to terms." Lacy was executed, 1617, and his lands given to Sir T. Standish (Inq. Exch., 1; Pacat. Hib., L, p. 55; C.S.P.L). 1641 J. Lacy, of Bruff, "a person of eminent power," took the C[astle]. from E. Standish, and from it harassed the English at Lough Gur. A rumour spread that the latter intended to burn Bruff; and this, with the fact of their burning Ballynegalliagh village, led Lacy to advance against them. He drew up his men on the hill; but the English did not venture to attack him, and he returned to Bruff. Unfortunately, while he was absent from home (against his explicit orders and his wife's entreaties), his followers hanged two English prisoners, in revenge for Ballynegalliagh (Deps., 359, 371, 457). 1655 Broffe C[astle]. bawn, orchard, and tucking-mill belonged to the daughters of Sir T. Standish (C.S., xxiv., p, 11). It was the chief residence of the Hartstonges, Baronets, in later days. Fabric - The C[astle]. was on the "Morning Star" river to the west of the bridge. It measured 35 feet [10.6m] by 18½ feet [5.6m], and had a square door with inclined jambs. It was 24 feet [7.3m] high, with a vaulted understory, the rest nearly gone. The defaced "Court" lay to the north-east, and was 27 feet [8.2m] long; both have been levelled since 1840 (O.S.L., 8, p. 102)'. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that the four daughters of Sir Thomas Standish were the owners in Bruff of 'a Castle Bawne orchard, tucking mill, grist mill, a fishing weare out of repayre' (Simington 1938, 128). The 18th century Church of Ireland church in Bruff stands on the site of an earlier church. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey Letters recorded following details about Bruff Church; 'The modern Church of Bruff occupies the site of an older one, which was in use until about fifty or sixty years since [c. 1780-90]. Inside the church there is to the left of the communion table a black marble monument with the following inscription; 'This Monument, with the Chappel, was pulled downe, to be sett up and better repaired in the Memory of Sir Thomas Standish of Bruff, Knight, deceased, by Standish Hartstonge, Esq. Recorder of the Citty of Lymrick, and second justice of the province of Munster, his Grandchild by Elizabeth, the eldest Daughter of Sir Thomas, who was Maryed to Francis Harstronge of Southreps in the county of Norfolck, Esq. which Standish their only sonne, first maryed Elizabeth the eldest daughter of Francis Jeremy of Gunton, in the county of Norfolck, Esq. and had issue by her, Eleaven children, whereof three sons and four daughters are now living, wich Elizabeth dying, he maryed Anne the daughter of his Grace Dr. John Bromhal, late Lord Primate of all Ireland, who is now co-heire to Sir Thomas Bromhal, Baronet, his Sonne, who died without issue; wich Standish and Anne, are yet living this 18th Octo. 1676, Septr. 4th 1685, Anne dying 3 years past the same, Sir Standish, now Bart. and Second Baron of the Exchequer Maryed Johanna the Eldest Sister of Sir Rowland Gwyn, 3 of the County Radnore, who hath now issue one sonne names Gwyn 3 months old' (Fitzgerald 1826, 322). Westropp (1904-5, 430) recorded the following details about Bruff; 'A parish, Brughnandeisi, in 1420 (O'Huidhrin, note, 700). Brug, 1186 (charter of Magio); Brugh, or Broff, dedicated to St. Peter of Alexandria, 26 Nov., 1410; Burgh, 1418; Borough, or Bruff, 1543 and 1578 (Inquisitions on the Hospital of Aney). Site - It had fallen into decay, so was demolished by Lady Lucy Hartstonge, and a new church built on its site, 1776 (Fitzgerald, i., pp. 320-2)'. Excavations in 2007 under licence no. 07E0558 by Ross MacLeod were summarised as following; 'Topsoil-stripping at the proposed new Limerick County Council housing development in Bruff, Co. Limerick, revealed two areas of archaeological interest. The first area was a series of intercutting pits, typically sub-oval in shape, averaging 0.8m long by 0.7m wide with a depth of 0.4m and a dark blackish-brown sandy silt fill. Located further to the north the second area contained a ring-barrow with an internal diameter of c. 10m and a 2.74m-wide, 0.59m-deep ditch. Two token cremation burials were located within the barrow' (www.excavations.ie).

Freestanding Portland stone monument, designed in 1931 and unveiled in 1952, comprising stepped limestone base with inscribed square-profile tapered plinth having figure of a Volunteer in a belted trench coat and gaiters, carrying a revolver and wearing a cap with a peak turned ot the back. He is standing on one leg resting on a rock and points purposefully northwards. Designed by the sculptor Albert Power (1881-1945), and carved in the early 1950s by Leo Broe. The inscription to plinth reads: 'Óglaigh na hEireann/This monument was erected in memory of Brigadier Sean Wall, Bruff, Officer Commanding, East Limerick Brigade, Irish Republican Army who was killed in action against the enemy at Annacarty, Co. Tipperary, 6th May 1921, and Martin Conway, Capt., 2.1.C. 3rd Battalion, John Quinlan, Company Lieutenant, Grange Coy., Eamonn Moloney, Volunteer Grange Coy., Daniel Sheehen, Volunteer, Grange Coy., Henry Wade, Volunteer, Ballyneety Coy., The five were killed in action against enemy forces at Caherguillamore 27th December 1920 and each volunteer of the East Limerick Brigade and every other volunteer who fought for the Irish Republic. Casain do Shaoirse a Eire.'

A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
