In pasture on a slight E-facing slope near the summit of a low ridge, with moderate to good views in all directions. The site is located 560m NE of the River Maigue and the townland boundary with Dunnaman. A fish pond and enclosure (LI021-086001/002-) lies 120m to E. The site is not depicted on OSi maps. The 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map illustrates a pocket of mixed coniferous and deciduous demesne landscape woodland at the site. The woodland on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map is annotated with ‘The Fort’. The N and W boundary of this woodland forms the townland boundary with Castleroberts. Inspected by the ASI in 2000 when it was described as a raised circular-shaped area (int. diam. 53m N-S; 54m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 9m; int. D 0.4m; ext. D 1m), intervening wide fosse (base Wth 1.4m; overall Wth 9.8; D 0.6m) and external earth and stone bank (Wth 8.7m; int. D 0.6m; ext. H 0.5m). The original entrance is located through the internal bank (Wth 10m) and external bank (Wth 14m) at E with a slight causeway in the fosse. The circuit of the internal bank is almost complete with a gap in the SE. The interior gently undulates, slopes slightly E and is in pasture. A stone field boundary is located on the W and N side along the external edge of the external bank, where the bank has been partially eroded. The banks and fosse are overgrown with trees visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. See attached sketch plan surveyed and drawn by the ASI and Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 13 August 2020 - LI021-086001: Fish-pond, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI021-086001-. In level pasture at the base of a slight E-facing slope, with moderate views to the S and E and poor views to the N and W. A woodland plantation annotated 'Morrisey Wood' lies 40m to E, which is associated with the landscaping of the demesne of Caherass Court located 850m to S. Ringfort (LI021-085----) lies 110m to W and and enclosure (LI021-087----) is 360m to S. The site is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a D-shaped enclosure (ext. diam. 135m N-S; 115m E-W) with straight side (L. 100m) at S surrounding a small raised platform (ext. diam. 27m N-S; 23m E-W) or island defined by a scarped edge that is annotated 'Old Fish Pond'. Inspected by the ASI in 2000 and described as a D-shaped area enclosed by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth 7.2m; int. H 0.6m, ext. H 0.3m) visible from W, N and E and intersected at S by a modern road, a small circular-shaped platform (int. diam. 12.2m) in the centre of the drained pond. The road was built along the line of the S bank of the fishpond. The platform is level with the external field surface. The interior of the drained pond is level, clear of scrub vegetation, waterlogged and only slightly lower than the surrounding field surface (D 0.4-0.6m). A concrete square pump house (diam. 3m) is visible in the NW corner of the pond. The omission of the fish-pond on the 1840 OSi 6-inch map and its inclusion on the 1897 map suggests a mid to late 19th century date for its construction. Possibly associated with the landscaping of the demesne of Caherass Court. However the annotation 'Old Fish Pond' on the 1897 map suggests that the earthwork may have been constructed in the 17th or 18th century. The earthwork is clearly visible on Google earth orthophotos taken 05/02/2009, 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2000. See attached sketch plan by the ASI and Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 16 August 2020 - LI021-087: Designed landscape - tree-ring, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI021-087----. Located 360m NE of the River Maigue and the townland boundary with Dunnaman. Fishpond (LI021-086---) 360m to N and possible barrow (LI021-088----) 120m to SE. Depicted as a small circular shaped copse of trees on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map and not as an antiquity. Shown as a tree-ring or landscape demesne feature on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. Inspected by the ASI in 2001 when it was described as a circular area (int. diam. 15.5m N-S; 16m E-W) defined by an earth and stone scarped edge with inner lip (bank) with an external fosse. The interior is not raised, slopes slightly to the SSW, is dry and clear of dense vegetation. The bank is low (Wth 2.6m; int. D 0.4m; ext. D 0.6m) and drops gradually into the fosse (base Wth 1.1m; overall Wth 4.36m; int. D 0.6m; ext. D 0.1m), the bank and fosse are present on all sides of the enclosure. The site is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. See attached sketch plan by the ASI and Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 16 August 2020 - LI021-088: Barrow - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI021-088----. Tree-ring (LI021-087----) 120m to NW. Not shown on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as an oval-shaped mound (ext. diam. 36m NE-SW; 35m NW-SE) defined by a fosse located within a tree lined landscape demesne avenue. The fosse (Wth c. 6m) encloses the site on all sides with a possible entrance at NE. Inspected by the ASI in 2001 when it was described as levelled with irregular undulations at the site. The location of the levelled earthwork is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. Possibly a small mound enclosed by a fosse similar to small barrow type monument. The siting of the earthwork on a tree-lined avenue associated with Caherass Court may suggest the remains of a 19th century landscape feature rather than a prehistoric burial mound. Ruins of medieval church also known as the Chapel of Say in the parish of Croom, stands on the N bank of the River Maigue overlooking a fording point and fishing weir. On the demesne lands of Caherass Court, 300m to W, mill race to S with Old Mill (LI021-113----) 435m to NE. According to Fitzgerald (1826, 332) this church was once a chapel of ease belonging to the Carbery family on whose land the chapel stood. Westropp (1904-5, 384) recorded the following details on Caherass; ‘ About 1251 John Flandrens made quit claim to Dysert Enegus, and Cathyrasse [Caherass], and in 1256 Bishop Robert leased the latter, with its fishery, also in 1272 (B.B.L., No. xlvii., lxi.); Chapel of Say, alias Cathiorassa, 1410; Cap. Say, in rect. de Cromoth, 1418; Carassie, 1601; Capella Say, 1615 b. Reeves, however, identifies it with Dunkepchy. The chapel was closed after its desecration by the suicide in it of its chaplain (Fitzgerald, i., p. 332). Fabric - The ivied walls stand on the bank of the Maigue, thickly overgrown'. Shown as a tree-ring (ext. diam. 42m N-S; 34m E-W) on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map with a fosse on its N, E and S side. On this map the W half has been incorporated into a field boundary with an estate avenue running along W side. Not depicted as an antiquity on any ed. OSi maps. Inspected by the ASI in 2001 when it was described as a raised roughly circular shaped area (int. diam. 27m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by an earthen scarped edge with external fosse(Wth 4.5m; int. D 1.2m; ext. D 0.9m). The interior was level, dry and lightly overgrown. An oval flat-topped mound (ext. diam. 12m NE-SW; 6m NW-SE; H 0.4m) visible in the NW corner of the ringfort. A field boundary (orientated NNE-SSW) runs along the NW side of the ringfort between the scarped edge and has removed the fosse on the NW side. The site is covered in trees visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. Possible ringfort that was reused as a landscape feature, alternatively may be the remains of a landscape feature associated with Caherass Court. In pasture on a slight SE-facing slope, with moderate to good views to the S and E with moderate views to the W and N. Standing immediately NW of entrance avenue to Caherass Court 415m to SW. Located 210m N of the River Maigue and the townland boundary with Ballynahown. Ringfort (LI021-091----) 65m to NW, Caherass Church (LI021-090----) 200m to S. Depicted as a circular enclosure around a copse of trees on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map and not as an antiquity. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a circular-shaped area (ext. diam. 40m) defined by a fosse and by a post-1700 field boundary from SW-W-N-E to ESE, intersected at SE by an estate access road. Inspected by ASI in 2001 when it was described as a raised roughly circular shaped area (int. diam. 37m N-S; 35m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6m; int. D 0.4m; ext. D 0.55m) with an entrance gap (Wth 4.5m) at SE. The interior undulates and slopes slightly SE. The addition of (now mature) estate trees suggests the site was converted into a landscape demesne feature or tree-ring. The site is partially tree covered and is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020.
