Westropp (1906-7, 93-4) recorded the following details about Caherconlish Castle; 'Kakinles C[astle]. was commenced. It was held by Theo. Walter le Botiller in 1214 (CJS.PX). 1285-7 Cathair-cind-lioss "rampart guarded, solid stone," with vaulted towers and drawbridge, stormed and burned by Torlough O'Brien, Prince of Thomond (Wars of Torl., Plea R.). 1338 Murage allowed the provost and bailiffs of Catherkenlyshe to build a stone wall round the town, which was on the marches, with Irish rebels on every side (Close R.). 1358 Edward III. gave it a charter (Pat. R.). 1583 W. Bourke held C[astle]. (Des. R. 37). 1605 It was leased by Lord Caher to Theo. Borke (cited C.S., xxi., p. 17). 1641 Monument to latter and his wife, Slany Brien, erected in church. 1680 Dyneley sketched the church and peel tower (R.S.A.I. ix., p. 197). 1690 It was occupied by King William, and in 1691 by Ginckell, when advancing to besiege Limerick. Fabric - Fitzgerald mentions four C[astle].s in 1827, and a fortified gate (vol. ii., p. 285); little is now extant. Dyneley's view shows a peel tower, four stories high, with a bartizan at one corner'. Caherconlish House described in 1837 as 'a handsome modern residence, erected near the site of the old family mansion, by the proprietor, Major Wm. Wilson; it is surrounded by fine plantations and ornamental grounds. The old mansion, which stood on a rock, was one of the castles above noticed, and though previously exhibiting no extraordinary marks of decay suddenly split from top to bottom, one half falling into a heap of ruins, and the other left standing; the gateway, on which are the arms of the Wilson family yet remains' (Lewis 1837, Vol. 1, 239-40). The historic town of Caherconlish was described in the Urban Survey of County Limerick as following; "Caherconlish is located in east Limerick just off the Limerick to Clonmel road. The placename suggests that there was a pre-Norman settlement here but there is no actual documentary evidence for its existence. It is not until the coming of the Anglo-Normans that the settlement is first mentioned. It formed part of the lands of Owney which were granted to Theobald Walter, ancestor of the Butler family. It is fortunate, perhaps, that it was to the Butlers that Caherconlish belonged because as a result an informative extent of the manor, prepared in the year 1300, survives (White 1932, 154-8). This extent makes it clear that Caherconlish was a borough settlement at the heart of a manor on which free tenants, cotters and betaghs also lived. Unfortunately the extent provides no knowledge of the size of the settlement or its appearance but it is clear from a grant of murage in 1358 that Caherconlish was defended, probably by earthen ramparts (Ir Rec Comm 1829, 61). The settlement was exposed to attacks by the native Irish, particularly the O'Briens and the "Wars of Turlough" recount the capture and burning of the castle in the 1280s. The borough appears to have declined in the later middle ages and it seems to have been already deserted at the time of Dinely's visit in the 1680s. The medieval borough was probably centred on the present village which has an L-shaped pattern bounded by a small stream on the west called the Groodie. There are no pre-1700 houses in the town. There are records of four Castles in the town (Westropp 1906-7, 94), traces of which survived apparently until the early 19th century but these have also vanished. These appear to have been fortified town houses of the type which still survives at Fethard, Co. Tipperary, and at Ardee and Carlingford, in Co. Louth. The site of one castle is marked on the OS.map to the south-east of the churchyard but no remains survive there and another is marked on the O.S.map to the north of the village. Another castle may have been on the site of Caherconlish House (Lenihan 1866, 727). There are also references to a college (Lewis 1837, i, 239). The settlement recieved a murage grant in 1358 granting the "provost, bailliff and commonalty of the town of Catherkenlyshe" the right to collect murage for twenty years (Ir Rec Comm 1829, 61). A gatehouse is said to have survived until the early part of the 19th century (Westropp 1906-7, 93) but no trace of it survives today. The medieval defences probably consisted of earthen ramparts but their course remains unknown. Reports of stone axeheads, pottery, house foundations are said to have been found in College. Field to the west of the settlement (Lynch 1896, 357)." OS 6-inch map described in the Urban Archaeological Survey of County Limerick (Bradley et. al. 1989, Vol. 1, 92-3) as follows: "Ringfort: An irregular shaped platform, 18m north-south by 35m east-west and up to c. 4m above surrounding ground level, is located on rising ground to the west of the village. There are good views to the north and west but restricted to the south and east. The platform is built on limestone outcrop which rises abruptly to the north, west and south-west but more gradually to the east and south-east. Multi-period fortified nave and chancel parish church of Caherconlish that was drawn in 1681 by Thomas Dineley which shows that the roofed nave was entered through a round-headed doorway located at W end of nave that is now blocked up. A single light slit ope possibly of cruciform shape is visible at W end of S wall of nave with triple light flat-headed window of 17th century appearance at E end of S wall of nave. The unroofed chancel walls were topped with stepped battlements and was entered through a flat-headed doorway with hood-moulding, probably dating from the late 16th/ early 17th century. A double bellcote rising from the apex of the chancel arch is visible above the roof line of the nave. Remains of an angle buttress are visible on the SE angle of the chancel. The church formed the N boundary of a burial ground that was enclosed by a circular-shaped stone wall with entrance gate at SE (NLI, MS 392; Shirley 1858-67, 197). Caherconlish Castle which is depicted as a tower house type structure stood outside the burial ground to the SW. Caherconlish C of I church ruins built in 1780 incorporating the W end of the medieval church ruins described in the Urban Survey of County Limerick as following; "This small medieval nave and chancel church, built of uncoursed rubble limestone, is unroofed, covered in ivy and in poor condition. It was altered in the nineteenth century when the nave walls were thickened, an east wall inserted to the west of the chancel arch and a west tower added. The chancel is now very ruined but it had a battered east wall and long and short quoins on the south east angle (some sandstone) and there is one splay of a window on the south wall. The centre of the chancel is filled with mortuary crypts. The chancel arch was originally pointed but when the church was shortened a smaller round arch, probably now functioning as the window of the nineteenth century church, was inserted. The nave was lit from the south by three windows but all are lacking jambs and tracery. There is an opening in the north wall and a doorway and flat lintelled mural stairs in the west end of the wall which may have led to an earlier tower. The west wall is nineteenth century." (Bradley et. al. 1989, 90-1). Caherconlish described by Westropp (1904-5, 440) as following; 'It was once a walled town, with four castles, and the ruins of a "college." A fortified gate stood till not long before 1826 (Fitzgerald, i., 285). Carkynlys, 1259 (Plea R.); Cathairconlish, 1285-7 (Wars of Torlough), when its castle was stormed and burned by Torlough O'Brien, king of Thomond. He "faced for rampart-guarded solid stone Cathair cind lioss." Inquisitions about persons killed in this raid are numerous. They are usually described as "slain at Karkynlys by Terdeluach Obreen, and other felons." The harbouring of the Irish by de Burgo, of Castle Connell, and the abbot of Wetheney, and the plundering of "Karkenlys Church," are fully recorded (Plea R., vol. ii., p. 126, xviii Ed. I., m. 31 ; in 40, p. 135, &c, &c). Records are numerous. Karkynglissi, in Wethney, 1302. Murage to provost and bailiffs of "Catherkenlysche, as lying on the marches, with the Irish rebels on every side" (Close R.). King Edward's charter is preserved, Nov. 9, 1358; Carkynlis deanery, 1615. The rectories of Carkynlishe, Killyvorly, Eathiordan, and Cayrelly, granted to Walter Ap. Howell,1552 (Fiants, 1020). The parishes of Caherconlish, Luddenbeg, and Willestown United, 1791 (L.M.H.). Fabric - T. Dyneley gives a sketch in 1680. It shows a ruined wing, with five-stepped battlements. The rest had a cross-shaped light and pointed door, and a triple window of oblong lights. In 1840 a fragment of the east end, 12 feet [3.65m] high and 7 feet [2.1m] long, stood, supported by a vault. The I. C. church covered the rest of the site. Monuments - Gabbett and Bourke. Theo. Bourke and his wife, Slaney Brien, "1441" (recte, 1641); mentioned also by Dyneley; and Annabel Gould, and the relatives of John Maunsell, 1662 (see Fitzgerald, i., p. 285). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
