Caherelly West Castle described in 1840 as, 'This castle is set upon a small eminence. It is about 60 feet high and 20 feet wide, being square. it still retains its roof, etc. in perfect condition' (OSNB Caherelly Parish, 321; OSL, 100). Caherelly West Castle stands 40m N of Caherelly Cottage with Caherelly Church (LI023-085001-) 330m to E. Westropp (1906-7, 91) recorded the following details about Caherelly West Castle and bawn (LI023-083001-); '1283 Suit of J. de Norragh about Catherelny (Plea R.). 1323 And of Almeric de Bellofago and T. f. Rhys, about Milltown watermill there (lb. 139, m. 23). 1583 "Carelii duo castell," by W. Bourke (Des. R., 37). 1599 Tadeus O'Heyne died, seized of the C[astle]. of Caherely en-temple. 1622 His son Conor died, whose son Donat entailed the C[astle]. hall, bawn, and vill of Le Caherelly (Inq. Chan., 69b). 1629 He was pardoned for alienation of Caherelly West (Pat. R.). 1655 Dan Heyne held it (C.S., xxi., p. 28). 1667 The C[astle]. of West Caherelly confirmed to Sir W. King (Act Sett.). The connexion of the O'Heynes, however, subsisted to at least 1748, when it is noted that Hynes of Cahirelly and Clanchy of Ballyvorneen were the only gentry between Ballinaguard and O'Brien's Bridge who were not Burkes (FitzG., vol. i., p. 284). Fabric - A peel tower, 60 feet [18.3m] high and 20 feet [6m] wide'. Tower-house like castle with house attached to one side depicted on the 17th century Down Survey map of Clanwilliam Barony (Hib. Reg.) and on the parish map of Caherelly (NLI MS. 718). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Teige Heyne, an Irish Papist, was the owner of Caherelly West which contained 'a Castle Bawen a Mill Seate & a marble quarry' (Simington 1938, 76). Classified by Donnelly (1999, 22, 37) as a Type 1A tower house which consists of a castle where the; 'ground floor entrance to the building leads to an entrance lobby. To one side of the entrance lobby is a doorway leading to a spiral staircase set in a corner of the building. To the other side is a doorway leading into a small chamber - the subsidiary chamber. The entrance lobby provides a direct route of access through to the main chamber.' Described by Salter (2004, 70) as following; 'The NW, SW and SE corners of this O'Heyne tower measuring 10.4m by 7.8m still stand 18m high, with a stair in the SE corner still serving all five levels. The second and fourth storeys once had vaults and the fifth storey still has a room within a square bartizan on the SW corner, whilst the east wall contained a tier of subsidiary chambers over the entrance. A gunloop in the bartizan has a square hole at the base and an oillet higher up. A second tower nearby had vanished by 1900'. Situated in NE corner of graveyard (LI023-085002-) with Caherelly Castle (LI023-083----) 340m to W. Only the chancel (int. dims. 6.1m N-S; 9.15m E-W; Wall T 1m) survives upstanding of this nave and chancel medieval parish church which according to local tradition was founded by St. Ailbe. The NE angle of the chancel (Wall T 1.2m) has collapsed while the remaining N and S walls survive upstanding to full height. The full length of the S wall remains upstanding while the E end of the N wall (L. 3m) has collapsed along with the N half (L 3m) of the E gable. The chancel arch (Wth 3m) with dressed stone surround survives intact with roof line of nave visible in W face of chancel arch. The soffit of the chancel arch has a slot that has been infilled, this slot may have supported the rood screen of the church. Two tall twin-light traceried windows pierce the S wall of the chancel with blocked-up opening in the W end of the N wall. The two tall windows are missing their mullions and tracery. Glazing grooves are visible in the jambs, there appears to have been no similar windows in the N wall of the chancel. Only the S splay of the E window embrasure remains upstanding as the rest of the E gable has collapsed. A broken out aumbry or wall cupboard is visible at E end of S wall adjacent to SE angle. Corbels are visible at top of N and S walls which carried a timber wall plate at this level. 18th century burial vaults have been built up against the internal and external face of the S wall. Two 18th century wall memorials have also been inserted into the external face of the S wall of the chancel. Caherelly Church was described by Westropp (1904-05, 442-3) as following; 'The middle gable and sides of the chancel stood in 1840. It is 32 feet [9.75m] by 20 feet [6m]; walls, 20 feet [6m] by 3 feet [0.9m]. The two south windows had large pointed lights divided by mullions. The chancel-arch was pointed and of well-cut limestone. Founder, traditionally St. Ailbe, possibly from misunderstood name'. Westropp (1904-05, 442-3) gave the following historical details about Caherelly Church; 'Caherelny, 1296 (Plea E. 24 of xxiv Ed. I., m. 4); suit of N. de Interberg about lands in "Ohatherelky" (Caherelky), 1299 (ib., m. 17); Katherelky, in Wethny deanery, 1302; presentation claimed by Almeric de Bellofago v. Abbot of Wethney, 1323 (ib., 144 of xvii Ed. IL, m. 9). It was claimed by the latter from the bishop of Emly in 1342. Caherelne, in Caherkynlis deanery, covered with thatch, 1615 (Map, D.S. (A), 22). Cathaireillidh, fort of Ailltheach, so O'Donovan, with no cited authority, and most doubtfully (in view of "elke"); others, with equal confidence and lack of record, say "Cathair Ailbe," or "Kill cathair Ailbe," from St. Ailbe, of Emly. Small gabled mortuary building (5.5m N-S; 6m E-W) of post-1700 date in SE corner pre-dates graveyard wall. 19th century vaulted tomb of the Wilkinson family occupies NW quadrant. Nineteenth and twentieth century gravestones evenly distributed around graveyard; earliest is 1795 (Ryan) in S-side. Recent interments 1985 (Hayes), 2003 and 2005 (McElligott) in S-side. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
