H 1.4m) and sloping bank-like outer face (ext. H 1.55m; Total Wth. 3.9m). Field boundaries abut enclosing wall at NE, S, NW and NNW. Boulders dumped against external wall face at SSW. Enclosing element is obscured by dense overgrowth NE->ESE, but enclosing earthen bank evident ESE->SSE (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.85m). Possible entrance at S where scarp lowers (H 0.15m). In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that in Cappagh 'stand the ruins of the Castle of Cappa, of which the north wall and six feet [1.8m] of the west wall only remain. The wall remaining is about seventy feet [21.3m] high and five feet [1.5m] thick and has windows and apertures for five floors. It is built on a low rock on which parts of the walls of the "court" attached to this Castle remain to the height of about thirty feet [9.1m]. This was a truly magnificent structure when perfect and reflects honor on the noble family of Desmond, by whom it was erected' (OSL, 135). The castle was described in 1826 as 'once a noble structure; half of which only now remains to shew its former grandeur: it is at least 100 feet high including the mound on which it is built; the coigne stones are all square and polished; the windows are at various heights, according to the different loftings, being formed of carved stone, and arched. The castle is surrounded by an embattled wall enclosing an area of thirty-five yards by twenty-four: it was built, according to tradition by the Fitzgeralds of which family there were two brothers, one of whom lived in Cappa Castle, and the other in a castle (LI011-072----) near Hollypark, north of it, to whom also belonged that of Cappa' (Fitzgerald 1826, 359). Westropp (1906-7, 210) recorded the following historical references to Cappagh Castle; '1201 Kyllmacluana held by the Church of Limerick (B.B.L., p. 14). 1302 Wasted by war. 1336 Keappach-Kylmccluana held by Bishop de Rupefort (Rental), and by "John Tho. Philip," Knight of Glin, before 1541 under the Bishops (B.B.L., p. 144). 1578 His C, or manor, of Keppaugh granted to the Lord President, Sir W. Drurye (Fi. 3277). 1583 Kyppagh, or Cappagh, the C. and vill. of Kylne-Cappagh, or Carrenbegg, late of T. macRuddery, Knight of the Valley; Walter Boorke, who held the C. was attainted; Ullig Browne next held it (Des. R., 41, 71b;, Peyton, 231b ; Inq. Exch., 10, 11 ; Carew i., 435). 1587 The lands, "long waste and unpeopled," granted to Gilbert Gerrard, and then to J. Stroude (Carew i., 449). 1591 Grant to W. Carter of the "ancient C, with a barbican ruined on the S.," and 320 acres (Fi. 5717). 1615 The Bishop claimed Knightes Kepagh, held by Oliver Stephenson (Vis. Reg.). 1629 Edm. Southwell conveyed it to Ric. Earl of Cork (Pat. R.). 1642 The C. blockaded by the Confederates, and surrendered by F. Morton. 1655 Cappagh with a great bawn, a ruined C, and a quarry, held by N. Dowdall (C.S., p. 53)'. Westropp (ibid., 210-11) described the castle as following; 'The north side of a strong tower, with an inner and outer enclosure; the last with turrets at the eastern angles, and fenced by low crags to the west. The keep is about 70 feet [21.3m] high, and is 41 feet [12.5m] by 30 feet [9.15m] over all. It is five stories high; the third and fourth resting on vaults. The windows very neat, and dating from about 1460-80. The eastern end contained the stairs, to the south-east, the porch, and small vaulted rooms. Their vaults on a level with those of the main wing. The inner court is 57 feet [17.37m] square, the outer 115 feet [35m] north and south; 78 feet [23.8m] east and west; the west walls abutting on the rocks. The north-east bastion is round, the walls near it about 50 feet [15.24m] high; the south-east turret had a gate; the walls rarely exceed 3½ feet [1m] thick. Legend in 1827 said that Fitzgerald, of Ballyglehane C., gave the use of Cappagh to his brother; but, urged by his wife, reclaimed it. The brother blew up the latter C. the day before its surrender'. Castle described in 2004 as following; 'The northern half of a 21m high tower measuring 12.1m by 8.7m built c 1460-80 lay within an inner bawn 17m square of which the north and west walls survive, the corner between them being chamfered off. The west side lies upon a rock face and the other three sides were enclosed by an outer bawn up to 10m wide, although not much now remains of the south wall and there is gap on the NE beyond a small round turret. The central tower was vaulted on the second and fourth of five storeys and had a fireplace in the north wall of the third storey. One fine window, wider than usual, remains at fifth storey level, where the west end was arched over in the same manner as at Beagh (LI003-002----), like Cappagh a seat of the Knight of Glin. In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Roughly circular area (diam. 30m) enclosed by stone bank (int. H 1.32m; ext. H 1.2m) NNE->NNW, and by recent earth and stone bank (int. H 1.55m; ext. H 1.4m) NNW->NNE (this area is open on 1923 OS 6-inch map). Stone bank is poorly preserved; vertical external wall-like face along E arc. Slight protrusion on external bank face at SE where two converging field boundaries, now removed, formerly abuted enclosure. At NNW a short stretch of dry-stone walling connects enclosure to field boundary. Interior surface is uneven; used as dump for earth, stones and general debris. H 2m), best preserved along W arc, lowers to scarp-like edge (H 1m; Wth 5m) NNW->NNE. Fosse, cut by field boundary at NNE, has field boundary running along outer edge at E. Narrow causeway (Wth 2m) across fosse at NNW. Interior, under pasture, slopes down gently to E. The church ruins at Cappagh was known in medieval period as Kilmaclugna (Begley 1906, 113). In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded that the ‘The ruins of the old Church are in tolerable preservation and situated on level ground in the Townland of Cappa. This building is fifty three feet [16.15m] in length and fourteen feet[4.25m] in breadth. The east gable contains a window of considerable size, which is semi-circular at top on the inside, constructed of chiselled stones and measuring ten feet [3m] in height and four feet six inches [1.37m] in width. On the outside it is pointed, constructed of chiselled lime stones and measures four feet nine inches [1.44m] in height and one foot six inches [0.45m] in width. It is six feet [1.8m] from the present level of the ground and divided into two parts (lights). At the distance of three feet, three inches [1m] from the east gable there is on the south wall a window whose head on the inside is a flat arch and which measures five feet [1.5m] in height and three feet [0.9m] in width. On the outside it is pointed and measures three feet six and a half inches [2m] in height and only six inches [0.15m] in width. At the distance of thirteen feet [14m] from this window the same wall contains another window of the same form and dimensions. At the distance of fifteen feet six inches [4.7m] from the west gable the same (south) wall contains the doorway which is flat arched at top on the inside and pointed on the outside; on the inside it is seven feet nine inches [2.36m] in height; and three feet ten inches [1.16m] in width and on the outside six feet three inches [1.9m] in height and three feet three inches [1m] in width. Between this doorway and the west gable and at the distance of three feet two inches [0.95m] from the south west corner, there are two quadrangular windows of the same size, one over the other, the lower being four feet six inches [1.37m] from the present level of the ground and the other two feet six inches [0.76m] over the first. They measure on the inside three feet four inches [1m] by two feet seven inches [0.78m] and on the outside one foot seven inches [0.48m] in height and six inches [0.15m] in width and are constructed of cut lime stone. The west gable is surmounted by a small belfry consisting of one semicircular arch, constructed of cut lime stone This gable also contains a window placed at the height of eight feet [2.4m] from the ground and measuring on the inside about six feet [1.8m] in height and three feet six inches in width and on the outside, where it is pointed and constructed of chiselled limestone, three feet six inches [1m] in height and five inches [0.12m] in width. The north wall is featureless. The side walls of this Church are about fifteen feet [4.5m] in height (of which three feet [0.9m] is a parapet) and two feet ten inches [0.86m] in thickness and all well built of hammered stones cemented with lime and sand mortar. There is a large grave yard attached to this Church but it is not now much used as a cemetery’ (OSL, 134-5). Westropp (1904-5, 412-3) gives the following details on Cappagh; 'A parish in Connelloe Lower. Kilmacluana, 1201; Kilmaclon, 1291, destroyed by war, 1302; Cappagh Kilmacluana, 1336 (rental); Keappagh and Kyapagh-ydaly, 1400; Ceapagh, or Keilnaceappug, or Triostane, 1410; Kylmeeluana, 1418. Grant by the Knight of the Valley off Cappagh Kilmclwony to Friars of Askeaton, 1541 (B.B.L.,p. 144); Cappagh in good condition, 1615b, not Clonagh, as by Dr. Reeves (MSS. 1063, T.C.D.). Ceapach, tilled plot ' (O'Donovan). Fabric - The church lies not far from the very picturesque castle. It is 53 feet [16.15m] by 14 [4.25m] feet. The east window is large, with two pointed lights, and round-headed splay arch. The south is pointed, with a flat splay head; and the south door is pointed. The west gable has a round-headed ope; walls 15 feet [4.57m] by 2 feet 10 inches [0.86m], with parapets (O.S.L., 9, p. 439)'.
