In pasture, on gentle E-facing slope. Formerly embanked circular enclosure (diam. 27m N-S) has been truncated on W side by N-S field boundary, creating D-shaped enclosure (23m E-W). Enclosing earthen bank (int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.35m) survives NNW->SW, with external fosse (D 0.2m; Wth 2.3m) NNE->SE; fosse is truncated on S side by dry-stone field wall (axis E-W). West half of interior, and enclosing element SE->NW, are covered by dense overgrowth of briars and bushes. Otherwise level interior is under pasture. In pasture, on low-lying terrain, in SE corner of large field. Monument, depicted as roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1841 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. Excavated by Emer Dennehy (02E0645) when 'the site was exposed during monitoring of topsoil-stripping along the route of a Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West. A single cremation pit, an irregular pit and a marker post were identified. The underlying boulder clay was cut by the small subcircular cremation pit, which measured 0.7m north-south by 0.6m and was 0.33m deep. The fill consisted of 10% sandstone and limestone in a dark grey, silty clay matrix with a large amount of burnt bone and some small charcoal pieces concentrated in the centre. It is believed to have had a central capping stone, which was removed during topsoil-stripping. The post, which was circular with a conical profile, was 0.37m in diameter and 0.43m deep. The basal/outer fill consisted of 10% limestone in a mid-grey/brown silty clay matrix. The upper/inner fill consisted of 10% limestone in a black silty clay matrix with a moderate amount of charcoal. The irregular three-sided pit, which measured 0.44m south-west/north-east and was 0.15m deep, contained two distinct deposits. The lower fill was composed of 10% limestone in a dark brown, silty clay matrix. The upper fill contained a very small amount of charcoal, which proved to be shallow and concentrated on the surface. The shape and fill of this cut indicate that it is a result of the disturbance of limestone boulders in the area; it was subsequently filled with burnt material and is non-archaeological in nature. This site is c. 10m to the south-east of additional cremation burials BGE 3/60/2 (No. 1156 below, 02E0877). Though initially given separate numbers, these sites should be interpreted as a single cemetery.' Excavated by Emer Dennehy (02E0877) when 'this site was exposed during the monitoring of topsoil-stripping along the route of a Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West. Four archaeological features and two phases of activity were evident on this site. During Phase I two pits were excavated. Pit I, a circular cut with a concave profile, was 0.48m in diameter and 0.17m deep. The lower deposit consisted of a small amount of limestone and sandstone in a black, charcoal-rich, silty clay matrix. The upper fill was a capping layer of redeposited natural in the centre of the pit. Pit II, a circular cut with a concave profile, was 1.1m in diameter and 0.25m deep. The lower deposit consisted of 10% sandstone and limestone in a black, charcoal-rich, silty peat matrix. The upper deposit was a capping layer of redeposited natural. Phase II is marked by the excavation of a further two pits. Pit III was circular with a concave profile, 0.5m in diameter and 0.16m deep. It contained a uniform charcoal-rich deposit with 10% limestone and a large amount of burnt bone, most of which was concentrated in the south-west quadrant. The fill rose above the level of the surrounding natural and partially covered Pit I. Pit IV, which cut Pit II, was subcircular, measuring 0.37m north-south by 0.61m, and was 0.19m deep. The lower fill was very similar to the surrounding natural and may have been a result of overcutting or been a lining. The upper fill consisted of a small amount of sandstone and limestone in a black, charcoal-rich, silty peat matrix. These four pits, with BGE 3/60/1 (No. 1155 above, 02E0645), c. 10m to the north-west, form part of a flat cremation cemetery.'
