At the top is a flat roughly circular summit (3m N-S; 3.8m E-W). The cairn is best preserved N->E but has suffered a partial collapse along its S arc. On low hill, to W of lake. The surrounding demesne is now a forest park. Curragh Chase is large 'two storey over basement' 18th century house, with early- 19th century addition, gutted by fire in 1941 (Bence Jones 1978, 97); walls of house still stand but door and window opes blocked up. According to Westropp (1906-7, 159) probably on site of Curragh Castle which is mentioned in Desmond Roll. The castle referred to in the Desmond Roll is probably the castle in the townland of Currahchase North (LI011-072---) located 2km to the N of Currah Chase house. No evidence to suggest that Currah Chase House was built on site of castle. Depicted as a circular-shaped tree plantation and not as an antiquity on the OS 25-inch map where it is shown as a suboval-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 34m), with a subrectangular-shaped annexe (approx. dims. 27m N-S x 30m E-W) partially conjoined to E. Obscured by woodland on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. Bank, best preserved E->SW, has lower external height along NW arc where it meets higher ground. Interior, heavily masked by vegetation overgrowth, is littered with loose stones from bank along its verge; slopes down gently to E. Recently constructed avenue leading to dwelling house, skirts enclosure on SW side. In woodland on high ground overlooking a lake to NW, on the demesne lands of Currah Chase House and castle (LI020-119----) standing 337m to NW. Annotated 'Pillar Hill' on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map indicating the presence of a pillar stone from which the hill was named. Annotated 'Pillar' on the 1897 OSi 25-inch map. The monument is not visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 14/02/2020 as the area is covered with trees. An architectural column rather than a standing stone which formed part of the designed landscape feature of the demesne of Curraghchase House. In 1829 Aubrey de Vere of Curragh Chase House recollected how upon the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Bill he ‘remembered climbing to the top of a high pillar on the summit of a hill opposite our house, though how the seat was achieved I cannot conceive, and standing upon it for many minutes, waving a lighted torch round my head in the gathering darkness’ (De Vere 1894, 760-8). Detached eleven-bay two-storey over half-basement house, built c. 1750, with two adjoining fronts, shorter one dating to the eighteenth century, longer front dating to c. 1829. House now derelict following a fire in 1941. Having bowed north elevation, full-height canted bay to south elevation and extensions to rear (west). Projecting three-bay end bays to front (east) elevation. Roof missing. Cut limestone walls with cut limestone quoins, plinth course, cornice and raised parapet. Cut limestone platband to south and part of rear elevation. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls to part of rear elevation, having render quoins. Mixed red brick and rubble stone walls to north elevation of extension. Square-headed openings having cut limestone sills and voussoirs throughout, now blocked. Those to south elevation having cut limestone surrounds and hoodmouldings. Shared limestone hoodmoulding to ground floor windows, north elevation. Square-headed openings to basement, north elevation, with limestone sills and surrounds and metal railings. Some openings to rear having red brick voussoirs. Square-headed opening to front with cut limestone voussoirs. Limestone slab to entrance. Square-headed opening to north elevation of rear extension with red brick surround and voussoirs, and metal door. Semi-circular opening to threshold with cut limestone surround and cast-iron lid. Raised land to front of house with cut limestone retaining wall with cut limestone copings. Rubble stone wall to rear of house enclosing yard. Segmental-headed arch to south elevation set within cut limestone breakfront, having red brick voussoirs and double-leaf timber battened door. Segmental-headed opening to north elevation, with red brick voussoirs, cut limestone surround, and bellcote to top. Five-bay single-storey stable building to rear. Pitched slate roof having cut limestone eaves course. Rubble stone walls. Square-headed openings with limestone sills, red-brick voussoirs and surrounds. Square-headed opening with red brick voussoirs and surround, and timber battened door. Segmental-headed opening having red brick voussoirs and double-leaf timber battened door.
