In a woodland plantation, 270m E of the townland boundary with Ballymackeamore. One of two ringforts in the townland (LI030-057/059----) on an E-W alignment 150m apart. The site is depicted as an enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map and is shown as a possible ringfort (ext. dims. c. 45m N-S; 45m E-W) enclosed by a bank and external fosse with entrance gap at S on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. Monument visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 surrounded by a forestry plantation to the W and SW and with scrub woodland developing within the monument, the external fosse has remained more open and there appears to be an unplanted exclusion zone around the NW, W and SW side of the site. The E side of the ringfort has been incorporated into a field boundary. The enclosure is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. The site is depicted as an enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map and is later shown as a circular-shaped ringfort (ext. dims. c. 45m N-S; 44m E-W) enclosed by a bank and external fosse with entrance at E on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. The ringfort is visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 where mature trees have grown on the ringfort bank, the external fosse is within the surrounding field in pasture. The enclosure is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020 with growing scrub developing within the monument. On a steep, W-facing slope, in pasture, 25m W of a townland boundary with Dollas. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Identified as a feature (BGE 3/67/5) during topsoil-stripping on the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West (Grogan et. al. 2007, 273-4). Excavated in 2002 by Marie Dowling and Kate Taylor under Licence No. 02E0631 and described as a group of four subcircular-shaped features consisting of two pits, a post-hole and a bowl furnace, which appeared to relate to the same phase of activity. The features were described individually as: ‘A bowl furnace, which measured 0.4m by 0.32m and was 0.3m deep, contained three fills. The primary fill produced debris from the smelting process, including charcoal and moderate amounts of iron slag. An area of oxidised natural clay, both within and beyond the limit of the feature, indicated in situ burning. The two pits had charcoal-rich fills, although neither showed evidence of in situ burning. The larger pit measured 0.95m by 0.85m and was 0.26m deep. Two fills were identified, the primary fill containing metal slag and a quantity of white shell fragments. The secondary fill produced metal slag and charcoal. It would not be unreasonable to assume that this pit had been used for the waste material from the bowl furnace, given the proximity of these features and the similar deposits they contained. The smaller pit measured 0.46m by 0.26m and was 0.05m deep; it contained no slag or other artefactual material. The nearby post-hole was also filled with a deposit containing a quantity of metal slag and frequent charcoal. The presence of the bowl furnace, showing evidence of in situ burning, together with the large quantity of metal slag recovered from the site, suggests an area used for metal production, probably ironworking. In the absence of immediately datable artefacts, it is not possible to determine the period of use for the site. It is anticipated that radiocarbon determinations from the charcoal, along with analysis of the slag itself, will provide a date for the activity’. On a steep, W-facing slope, in pasture, 105m to W of a townland boundary with Dollas. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Identified as a feature (BGE 3/67/5) during topsoil-stripping on the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West (Grogan et. al. 2007). Excavated in 2002 by Kate Taylor under Licence No. 02E0632 and described as ‘A large north–south-aligned ditch was visible for a length of 14m, although it probably extended beyond the excavated area in both directions. Four slots were excavated, measuring 6.85m in combined length. For most of its length the ditch was c. 2m wide; however, a short stretch toward the southern end measured 2.75m. The sides were generally steeply concave, although the wider section to the south had a more gently concave profile. The base was roughly flat, and the ditch was 0.65–0.86m deep. The stratigraphy of the fills was fairly consistent along the length of the ditch, although not all deposits were seen in all slots. The primary and secondary fills were silty clays, probably the result of natural silting. A dark grey/brown layer containing charcoal overlay the silting; this was overlain by a deposit of large stones. Finally, a thin deposit of mid-orange silty clay, similar to the lower fills, overlay the stones in places. Eight artefacts were recovered, almost all from the dark layer or the upper fill. Three ceramic items consisted of a sherd of green-glazed pottery that appears to be medieval and two fragments of coarse pottery, fired clay or daub. A fragment of post-medieval bottle glass was found in the upper fill. Three pieces of bone and an oyster shell complete the assemblage. The size of this isolated ditch is unlike those of most of the post-medieval drainage features encountered in the area and is more suggestive of a boundary feature. It is possible that, despite the post-medieval glass in the upper fill, the feature was an earlier boundary ditch, perhaps medieval in date. The deposit of large stones may indicate deliberate backfilling of the ditch, which at that stage had largely silted up. The stones may have derived from a demolished wall or agricultural improvement, a practice that was common from the late 18th century onward’ (Taylor 2004, 317). Identified as a feature (BGE 3/67/7) during topsoil-stripping on the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West (Grogan et. al. 2007). Excavated by Kate Taylor under Licence No. 02E0637 and described as an oval-shaped spread (L 1.07m; Wth 0.64m; D 0.07m) with an irregular, shallow profile. The spread material was a blackish brown silty clay with a moderate amount of charcoal and occasional small stones. No artefacts were recovered, nor any material suitable for obtaining a radiocarbon determination’ (Taylor 2004, 317-8).
