Low oval-shaped mound (2/23/1) excavated by Christine Tarbett in 1986 prior to the construction of the Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline, associated with some pits (LI040-108001-) and a possible kiln (LI040-108002-). The results of this excavation were summarised as follows; ‘As a result of the second grading the site was severely truncated. The surviving features included a ring-ditch enclosing a roughly circular area 6.35m x 6.20m (external diameter). The ditch was 60cm-1m wide and 14-25cm deep. One cremation pit was revealed almost abutting the inner ditch edge on the south-west side of the enclosed area. It is possible that the centre of the mound may have contained pits also but removal of the topsoil and subsequent grading may well have completely removed these. The remaining pit survived to just 18cm in depth and measured 40cm x 60cm. Excavation of a ring-ditch (LI040-108----) and kiln (LI040-108002-) prior to the construction of the Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline by Christine Tarbett in 1986 revealed the following; ‘Two pits lay a little over 5m west of the ring-ditch. One contained the shattered sherds of at least six different Beaker pots. The second may have been a kiln pit. The pit containing the pottery was 40cm x 35cm and survived to only 13cm in depth. Excavations by Christine Tarbett of a ring-ditch (LI040-108----) and pits (LI040-108001-) prior to the construction of the Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline revealed the following; ‘The kiln pit had a teardrop-shaped plan measuring c. 70cm in diameter, with an extended neck 60cm long which narrowed to 21cm. After removal of the several deposits of fill, a channel was found to extend from the neck into the base of the pit, forming a possible drafting flue. OSi 6-inch map as a circular shaped raised platform defined by a scarp. Annotated “Doonmoon” on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch where it is shown as a raised circular shaped platform (diam. c. 21m) defined by a scarp. Well preserved monument visible as a circular shaped platform defined by a scarp with wet rush-covered fosse (Wth c. 6m)on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages. Appears to be the remains of a well preserved platform ringfort with wet fosse standing on poorly drained pasture which has been partially reclaimed. The cropmarks of drainage ditches and paleochannels are clearly visible in area around this earthwork. The lack of an entrance feature, enclosing bank, wet fosse and locaton on poorly drained land may suggest the possibilty that this monument was of a ritual nature more akin to a barrow rather than a settlement site such as a ringfort. Semi-circular shaped earthwork visible as a large curving cropmark (approx. dims. 100m N-S; 70m E-W) to W of a post-1700 field boundary/drainage ditch running roughly N-S. A relic watercourse intersects the cropmark at SW. No evidence of an enclosing element to E of post-1700 field boundary which casts doubt on the antiquity of this feature. Visible as a curving waterlogged ditch on Google Earth orthoimage taken 20/03/2018. Could be the remains of a curving water channel associated with land reclamation rather than the remains of an archaeological earthwork. See attached Google Earth orthoimages.
