The main doorway into the church was the wider segmental-headed doorway at W end of S wall of nave and was constructed with sandstone ashlar masonry. The narrower N doorway directly opposite was also constructed with similar masonry. Directly inside the S doorway to the E are the remains of a cut stone stoup projecting out from the face of the wall. The remains of a hanging eye are visible on the W side of the doorway. The nave was lit by a single light window set into segmental arched embrasures at the E end of the N and S walls adjacent to the poorly preserved remains of a large chancel arch. The broken out E window is now covered in ivy making examination impossible. A broken out window is visible located off centre to E in the N wall of the nave. A row of corbels supporting a first floor is visible at W end of nave which probably represents the remains of a priest residence. There is no window in the ground floor of the W gable. A single light window now covered in ivy is located at first floor level in W gable. The pointed chancel arch is now covered in ivy and several of the archstones have fallen out. The chancel was lit by two windows in the S wall, the window located off centre to W is now destroyed by a tree growing out of it. The window at the E end of the S wall consists of a single light pointed window set into a round headed window embrasure constructed with sandstone ashlar masonry. A wall cupboard or aumbry can be seen immediately E of this window. A second aumbry is visible off centre to S in the E wall of the chancel. A single light window now covered in ivy was visible in the E end of the N wall of the chancel. Church described in 1865 as following; ‘this little Church, which consists of a nave and chancel; the dimensions of the nave internally are 43 ft. [13.1m] by 21 ft. [6.4m]; those of the chancel 23 ft. [7m] by 16 ft. [4.9m]. The walls are of rough masonry of rounded or boulder stones, there being apparently no quarried stone employed in the building, except quoins, or those in the doors or windows, which are of nicely dressed sandstone. The doors are segmental arched, inside and outside. The external jamb of the north door is 2 ft. 5 in. [0.74m] wide at the springing of the arch, and 2 ft. 7 in. [0.79m] at the bottom; the dimensions of the corresponding internal jamb are 3 ft. 1 in. [0.94m], and 3 ft. 4 in. [1m]. The south door is quite similar, but larger. The windows are deeply splayed, and very small. Those in the nave have circular heads, and the splay arches are pointed; while those in the chancel are pointed, with the splay arches circular. In Plate XXX, a sketch is given of one of the chancel windows, the height of which is 2 ft. 3 in. [0.67m]. The others are of about the same size, except the east window, which is 4 ft. 2 in. [1.27m] high. The jambs of the windows as well as of the doors, slightly incline. There is one window in the chancel of later date, and much ruder workmanship — of limestone. The sills of the nave windows are from 7 to 8 ft. [2.13-2.43m] above the ground; those in the chancel are much lower. The chancel-arch was pointed, and had dressings of the same sandstone as the windows, without either mouldings or chamfers. There are two square recesses for aumbries. The old quadrangular font [LI021-081003-] remains: externally it is 2 ft. [0.6m] square; internally, its depth is 8 in. [0.2m]. Between the doors and the west end of the nave, are corbels for supporting a floor, somewhat similar to those already described in the small Church at Adare, and, as there, indicating the existence of a room or residence for the priest. From the mixture of round and pointed arches, the date of this Church would, in England, be fixed at about the latter part of the twelfth century, but it may be rather later in Ireland’ (Dunraven 1865-203-4). Westropp (1904-5, 384) recorded the following details on Dunnaman; ‘John Maunsell held Cresdire, Kilgubban, Drastenagh, and Caberas, 1298 (Plea R. 40 of xxvii Ed. I., m. 106, and 44 of same, m. 10); Dunnemeaunn, Rustainy, or Ballythristan, 1410; Ecc. Ville Trostanii, 1418; Dunnambeann, 1562 (A.F.M.). The name is derived from the Thurstan, or Trostan, family: see Croom, 1323. Fabric - "Teampul na Trionoid," locally, has a nave and chancel 43 feet [13.1m] by 21 feet [6.4m], and 23 feet [7m] by 16 feet [4.87m], of rough masonry, with segmental-arched doors in the sides. The chancel arch is pointed, corbels for a gallery at west end of nave. The windows have round-headed splays and pointed lights. There is a sheela-na-gig [LI030-012001-] set in the neighbouring castle [LI030-012----]'. Westropp (1916, 81) suggested that this building was a small late Gothic church probably dating from the late 15th century. Catherine, daughter of the Earl of Desmond died in 1506, the Annals wrote that; 'Catherine, daughter of the Earl of Desmond, i.e. Thomas, the son of James, Lady of Hy-Carbury, a charitable and truly hospitable woman, died. It was by her that Beann-dubh and Dun-na-m-beann were erected' (O'Donovan 1856, 1289). O'Donovan identified this reference as relating to Dunmanway Castle, Co. Cork rather than Dunnaman Castle as suggested by Lady Dunraven (1865, 198). Westropp (1906-7, 167) recorded the following historical details about Dunnaman; '1297 Geff. f. Ric. held Villa Yursteyn (Justiciary R. Cal., p. 98). 1298 Drastenagh, held by J. Maunsell (Plea R.). 1418 Villa Trostany (Tax.Proc.), Rustainy or Dunnemeaunn (Torn Roll White MS.), named from the Thursteyn family (see under Croom, 1323); Lady Dunraven asserts that it is the C. of Dunnambeann, in Cairbre, named as built in 1506 (A.F.M.), where O'Donovan, with more probability, identifies this with Dunmanway, in Carbury (Mem. Adare, p. 198). 1571 Pardon to W. Lacye, of Thurstanstown, Co. Lim. (Fi. 1694). 1587 Ballyrustan, or Downemeane and Uregare, granted to G. Thornton (Carew i.,p. 449 ; Fi. 5052); he died 1605. A later G. Thornton held it, 1655 (C.S., xxiv., p. 42; D.S.A., 49; B.D., p. 73). 1666 Confirmed to E. Ormsby.' In 1840 the castle was described as 'the ruins of a square Castle of considerable height and extent. It is about seventy feet [21.3m] in height and near its south angle there is a chimney standing about sixteen feet [4.87m] above the square' (OSL, 195-6). The castle was described in 1865 as following; ‘The Castle of Dunnaman consists of a massive oblong tower, surrounded by a wall now nearly destroyed. The tower is 46 ft. [14m] in length by 33 ft. [10m] in width, and is only 31 ft. [9.45m] in height to the present summit of the wall, which clearly was never much higher; but there may have been apartments in the roof, as can be seen in the much more lofty tower of Annadown. The peculiarities of the building, among which may be reckoned the immense thickness of the walls in proportion to the size of the tower, are well seen in the two accompanying ground-plans. The walls are 8 ft. [2.4m] in diameter, or about double the thickness of those which are generally to be found in Irish mediaeval castles, such as Adare, Askeaton, and others. The entrance door leads into a narrow passage, in the roof of which is a square hole from 2 to 3 ft. [0.6-0.9m] in diameter communicating with the room above. This is popularly called the murdering hole, and was evidently used for pouring or flinging down missiles on the heads of assailants. There are two round holes in the door; one in the moulding of the jamb, and another at the top of the arch, which would serve, cither for shooting through, or as a spy-hole. The jambs are ornamented with punched work, the pattern on one side being in squares like a chess-board. To the right of the passage is a small room, 8 ft. [2.4m] long by 5 ft. 6 in. [1.67m] wide, which was probably used as a guard-room: on the left is a spiral staircase. The principal chamber on the ground-floor is 32 ft. [9.75m] long, by 17 ft. [5.2m] wide; lighted merely by three loopholes very widely splayed, and contains no fireplace. It is covered by a vault, which, up to about one third of its height from the springing, is constructed of wrought stones laid horizontally, corbelling out one over the other, and of which the soffits are cut to the form of the arch. The vault above these wrought stones is composed of rubble thrown in from above on to the centre, which was afterwards removed. There are corbels in the walls for supporting the beams of a floor, and additional loop-holes above this level, so that there were two stories beneath the vault. Over the entrance passage and guard-room, and on a level with the floor just described, is a small room 14 ft. [4.25m] by 8 ft. 6 in. [2.6m], entered from the staircase in a peculiar way, which cannot well be shewn on either of the ground plans. Above the door opening to this room, the staircase leads to the principal apartment of the Castle. It is of the same size as the vaulted room underneath, and contains a large fireplace, (the only one in the entire building), and is lighted by three narrow windows. From this room a passage communicates, in the thickness of the wall, with a garderobe. Near the fireplace, a short and narrow passage leads to a small room of the same dimensions as, and immediately over the one already described. This room is lighted by a window 1 ft. [0.3m] in width, the largest in the Castle, the splay or inner arch of which is formed of finely cut stone, similar to the splay arches in the Prior's house of the Franciscan Priory, Adare. No traces of the construction of the roof remain; but there is a square hole on the summit of the western wall, in the centre of its breadth, which communicates with the garderobe shaft below, and was apparently constructed for the purpose of flushing it from above. Among the windows are examples of round, square, and ogee heads; the dripstones over those in the two small rooms are very singular, and characteristic of Irish buildings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The woodcuts in the following page exhibit these peculiar mouldings and ornaments. Inserted in the wall near one of these windows is an example of that class of sculptured stones [LI030-12001-], so strange in their character, representing the female figure in the most repulsive way. In the woodcut of the eastern front of the tower (vide next page), the position of the figure just noticed, and the two windows are shewn. Those on the other sides are mere loops’ (Dunraven 1865, 198-201). Westropp (1906-7, 167) described the castle as a 'low peel tower, probably later than 1500. It is 46 feet [14m] by 33 feet [10m], and 31 feet [9.45m] high ; the walls 8 feet [2.4m] thick, with the usual guard-room, porch, " murder-hole," and stairs. Figure of a sheelanagig [LI030-012001-]'. In the woodcut of the eastern front of the tower (vide next page), the position of the figure just noticed, and the two windows are shewn’ (Dunraven 1865, 198-201). The position of the sheela-na-gig was recorded in 2001 as being located halfway up the external face of E wall of tower house (LI030-012----) (McMahon and Roberts 2001, 129). Described by Freitag as a ‘large figure on slab and set within frame. Roundish head shows several billowy lines across forehead, oval eyes, wedge nose and open mouth. Extremely long arms, with open armpits, and hands passing beneath thighs to grab vulva. Flat breasts on heavily incised ribcase which extends over abdomen. Oval-shaped vulva, hanging between widely splayed legs. Large toes touching edge of frame, and between these, directly underneath vulva, there is an egg-shaped object’ (Freitag 2004, 131-2). This wall was shown on the 1865 drawing by Dunraven as running N-S to E of castle, a short stretch of this wall can still be seen standing approx. 11m E of the castle. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
