In undulating pasture, located 200m S of the townland boundary with Baurnalicka. Finniterstown House lies 280m to the SW. The site is depicted as a circular fort (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. A trigonometrical station is shown on its N bank suggesting that the site is located on a high point in the field. The map shows three small farm buildings abutting the S and SW edge of the enclosure. The monument and the outbuildings are not depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map which indicates that the monument was levelled between these dates. The field is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. Atop low rise, in gently undulating pasture. D-shaped area (23m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 0.3m; Wth 6m) ENE->NW, and enclosed on N side by dry-stone field wall travelling E-W. No trace of scarped edge or raised area on N side of field wall though 1841 OS 6-inch map shows enclosure as complete circle (diam. c. 30m). Field boundary shown abutting scarped edge to SW on 1923 OS 6-inch map has been removed. Scarp overlain by earthen bank (H c. 0.5m) ENE->SW; this probably remains of field boundary. Break in scarp at E (Wth c. 7m) used by cattle accessing interior. Interior and enclosing element are overgrown by briars and nettles. Dry-stone field wall, shown on 1841 OS 6-inch map bisecting enclosure on NW-SE axis, survives though in a somewhat collapsed condition. Field boundary, shown skirting enclosure W->E on 1923 OS 6-inch map, have been removed, leaving enclosure part of enlarged pasture field. In gently undulating pasture. Five storey rectangular tower (c. 11.75m N-S; 8m E-W); only E and S walls now stand: E to full height (less battlements) and S to 2nd floor, though W stood to 'six feet' in 1840s (OSLB, vol. 2, 240). Entered through doorway, near S end of W wall, of which only S jamb survives. Immediately inside (to E) jamb is passage leading S, now filled with rubble; this probably let to base of spiral stairs in SW corner, only evidence for which is section of curved side-walling at 1st-floor level. Immediately E of latter passage is arched door into unlit mural chamber (3.8m E-W; 1.9m N-S) covered by wicker-centred vault. Only SE corner of main ground-floor chamber survives; chamber formerly covered by wicker-centred vault (N-S axis). First floor has blocked ope in S wall, a 'shot hole' according to Donnelly (1994, 103). Near S end of E wall is door leading to mural garderobe chamber (3.5m N-S; 0.65m E-W), covered by lintles and lit by two slit windows in E wall. Immediately N of door into latter chamber is door leading N into second mural chamber, covered by wicker-centred vault and lit by window in E wall with small linteled light. Second floor has window in S wall with wide rectangular light, divided by two mullions, one of which is gone, covered by hood moulding. This floor formerly covered by vault springing from E wall. Both 3rd and 4th floors have remains of mural chamber in SE corner, one of which contains garderobe whose shaft is evident through wall lower down. Top of E wall has line of gutter spouts draining wall walk; SE corner stands slightly higher and has slit on E side. East-of-centre on external S wall, at ground-floor level, short section of bawn wall protrudes (L c. 0.4m); this appears to be contemporary with tower. Judging by location of entrance door in W wall and exit for garderobes at base of S end of E wall, bawn probably on SW side of tower. However, ivy-clad wall (surviving L c. 6.2m; Wth 1.25m) outside (3.2m from SE corner) and at angle to E wall of indeterminate nature; at its N end is ruin of lime kiln of 19th-century appearance. A Geraldine castle which, though granted to St. Ledger in 1567 (Westropp 1906-7, 222) seems to have remained in Fitzegerald hands to 1655 when described as a 'ruined Castle and a Bawne' (Donnelly ibid.). This site was examined by Graham Hull and Liam McKinstry (02E0665) as part of Bord Gáis Éireann's Pipeline to the West. It consisted of 'a burnt spread, typically 0.12m thick, was observed during monitoring and measured c. 9m (south-west/north-east, from the edge of the easement) by 15m. Two modern field drains cut through the spread. Two small pits and a large pit were recorded below it. The small pits were oval, measuring 1.6m (east-west) by 0.44m by 0.34m deep and 0.76m (north-south) by 0.6m by 0.23m deep. The pits were 0.9m apart and were filled with a mid-grey/brown, clayey silt with a very high burnt stone content, similar to the burnt spread. The large pit was subcircular, c. 2.8m in diameter, and was 1.25m deep. The break of slope was gradual at the top and steepened toward the base, which was irregular and cut through bedrock. There were thirteen pit fills and one recut. The primary fill was a dark grey, silty clay with c. 70% burnt or decayed stone inclusions and some charcoal. The basal deposit was recut, and laminar deposits had been introduced to the pit. Charcoal and animal bones were recovered from the bottom of the recut pit. Decayed wood and one large piece of dumped and waterlogged tree root were also found in the pit. The large pit may have functioned as a fulacht fiadh trough, but its depth and the absence of an impermeable lining suggest that it was more likely to have been a well or possibly a borrow pit, associated with a burnt mound.' This site was examined by Graham Hull (02E0668) as part of Bord Gáis Éireann's Pipeline to the West. He found 'a single shallow pit describing an elongated oval was excavated. The pit measured 1.4m (north-east/south-west) by 0.3-0.48m. The pit sides sloped down to a flattish base 0.18m below the ground surface. The south-west side was steeper than the north-east. The fill, a fine, silty clay at the south-west end of the pit was a red/orange colour with occasional charcoal inclusions, suggestive of in situ burning. At the north-east end of the pit the fill was grey/brown with more frequent charcoal flecking. The cut is best interpreted as a fire-pit, but without artefacts it is not likely that a date for its use will be forthcoming.'
