In pasture on a slight S-facing slope, with excellent views to the NE, N and W, poorer views to higher ground to the S and E. The townland boundary between Ballygeale and Liskilly curves around the external N and W edge of the site. A potential fulacht fia site (LI021-176----) is located 150m SE and a ringfort (LI021-153---) 200m to NE. Depicted on the 1840 OSi 6-inch map as a large fort (diam. c. 100m) with a small house or cabin located 4m outside the NW rampart and on the later OSi 1897 25-inch map OSi map as a sub-rectangular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. 72m N-S; 83m E-W). The site was inspected in 2000 by ASI and described as a raised roughly rectangular area defined by an earthen bank with scarped edges. The interior of the enclosure (int. diam. 42m N-S; 59m E-W) undulates and field clearance debris has been deposited within the S half of the site. The N, E and W enclosure bank survives (Wth 8.1m; H int. 0.5m; ext. 0.7m) and is covered in mature trees, the southern enclosure boundary is defined by a tree lined scarped edge. Entrances into the enclosure are located in the N bank (Wth 12m), E bank (Wth 7m) and SE bank (Wth 12m). No external fosse evident. A quern stone was discovered 20m SE of the enclosure during land reclamation (now in the National Museum of Ireland). The site is visible on Google Earth orthophotos taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. See attached sketch plan surveyed and drawn by the ASI and Google Earth orthoimages. In undulating pasture on a slight E-facing slope, with good views in all directions. The townland boundary between Ballygeale and Liskilly and enclosure (LI021-052----) are located 200m W and SW respectively, the old line of the Limerick to Charleville Railway lies 35m to E. Depicted on the 1840 OSi 6-inch map as a fort annotated ‘Lisnatinerlagh’ and on the later OSi 1897 25-inch map OSi map as an embanked circular enclosure (ext. diam. 32m N-S; 35m E-W) encircled by a later field boundary. The site was inspected in 2000 by the ASI and described as a roughly raised D-shaped area (int. diam. 16m N-S; 20.5m E-W) defined by a fosse and scarped edge to the S where a fifth of the site appears to have been truncated. The internal edge of the fosse (Wth 7.2m; D int. 0.8m; ext. 0.4m) on the N, E and W side is covered in mature trees, the S quadrant is open. A field boundary extends W from the NW of the site. The site is visible on Google Earth orthophotos taken 28/06/2018, 02/07/2018 and 14/02/2020. See attached sketch plan surveyed and drawn by the ASI and Google Earth orthoimages. In gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. The townland boundary with Liskilly is 450m to W. A potential fulacht fia site (LI021-176----) is located 250m to W and a ringfort (LI021-052---) 360m to NW. Depicted on the 1840 OSi 6-inch map as a circular fort annotated ‘Lisnagroagh’ lined by deciduous trees. Shown on the 1897 OSi 25-inch map as a sub-rectangular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. 43m N-S; 47m E-W) with an angled projecting corner in the NE. The site was inspected in 1990 and 2000 by the ASI and described as a raised circular-shaped area (int. diam. 29.2m N-S; 30.1m E-W) defined by a low broad earth and stone bank with an external fosse. The truncated remains of a rectangular stone structure or building was located adjacent to the N inner face of the ringfort bank. Three wall footings survive (N, W and E walls), the S wall is absent. Two modern areas of disturbance were recorded where the ringfort bank has been pushed into the site to form paths above the old internal surface (dims. L. 10m; W. 3.7m; H 0.3m), these linear features correspond with the location of two breaks through the ringfort bank that were presumably levelled and pushed into the interior c. 1990. The N opening bisects the stone wall footing described above. Two further modern rectangular trenches or pits (Wth c. 1m x 0.6m; D 1.1m) were excavated by the landowner in the interior of the fort at the same time (c. 1990). The pits section faces revealed archaeological deposits of cobbles mixed with clay and animal bone, a single shard of 13th / 14th century Anglo-Norman type pottery (now in the National Museum of Ireland) was recovered from the pit fill. The ringfort bank (Wth 7m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.6m) has two modern entrances into the ringfort where breaks in the bank are evident (N Wth 4m and SW Wth 3.7m). Both entrances corresponded with the internal linear raised areas where the bank was pushed in. An external fosse (Wth 4.2m; int. D 0.6m; ext. D 0.1m) was recorded around the ringfort bank, field clearance stones have been filled into the feature. The landowner in 2000 said that there was a local folk tradition that there was an ancient church in the townland; he believes the stone structure within the fort is the remains of the church (Dan Riordan pers. comm.). The site is visible on Google Earth orthophotos taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. See attached sketch plan surveyed and drawn by the ASI and Google Earth orthoimages. In gently undulating pasture with good to moderate views in all directions. The enclosure is located 275m W of the townland boundary with Killonahan and 500m E of the townland boundary with Fanningstown, ringfort (LI021-055----) lies 300m NNW. The site is depicted as a circular fort (ext. diam. c. 35m) lined with deciduous trees on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map, with E-W field boundaries abutting the N and S side of the monument. It is not depicted on subsequent maps. Inspected by the ASI in 2000 and described as having no extant trace above ground level. The bank and fosse on the S and SE side are faintly visible as a semi-circular enclosure (ext. diam. 28m E-W; 35m N-S) on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. The enclosure is located 10m N of the townland boundary with Fanningstown and 230m NW of the townland boundary with Rathbranagh. An enclosure (LI021-057----) lies 200m to SW. The site is depicted as a circular fort on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map and is annotated ‘Lisnasprunane’ or ‘Lios na Spíonán’ meaning fort of the gooseberry bushes (Joyce 1913, 324). It is depicted as a roughly heptagonal scarped enclosure (ext. diam. 52m N-S; 47m E-W) on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. Inspected by the ASI in 2001 when it was described as a roughly circular area (int. diam. 30m) defined by an earth and stone flat-topped bank (Wth 5.7m; H 0.6m) with entrance gap (Wth 8m) at E . The interior is level, dry and densely overgrown. The bank is recorded as being very rocky and may be the remains of a collapsed stone cashel wall. No fosse was identified at the site. The site is covered in dense mature tree and scrub woodland visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020.
