On these sides, too, the fosse remains, but is gone on the north side. The height of the platform on the south side is 4' [1.2m] and the overall diameter is 120' [36m]. Situated in wet lowland. Lysaght (C.S., p. 19). 1667 Granted to Lord Kingston'. Castle site described in 1942-3 as following; 'A heap of fairly small boulders is all that now remains of this castle. O'Donovan says that its ruins were 60' [18m] square and that it was surrounded by a court wall 130' [40m] by 160' [49m]' (O'Kelly 1942-3, 222). In 1840 the castle site was described as; 'The ruins of this old castle are insignificant. the castle was about 60 feet [18m] square, and was surrounded by a Court wall (LI022-087001-) about 130 feet [40m] by 160 feet [49m]; but the walls are completely defaced' (OSNB Fedamore Parish). No castle is depicted in the townland of Garryellen on the 1654-7 Down Survey maps (NLI, Ms 718) and is not mentioned in the 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick (Simington 1938, 107). Enclosure described in 1942-3 as following; 'This monument consists of a rectangular space which was surrounded by an earthen bank faced on the outside with stone. The bank remains only for a short distance on the east side and at the south-east corner. Surrounding the bank on the outside is a wide, deep water filled fosse. There is no causeway or other means of crossing this. The water is from 3' [0.9m] to 4' [1.2m] deep. Outside this there was an earthen bank. This has disappeared altogether on the east, but is continuous around the other sides. The monument measures 240' [73m] north to south by 180' [55m] overall. In low-lying level pasture 10m S of a stream that marks the townland boundary with Fanningstown. Ringfort (LI022-229----) located 120m to SW. Surveyed by the ASI in 2000 and described as an ovoid shaped area (9.5m N-S; 12m E-W) defined by a scarped edge (H 0.4m) and an external fosse (W 2.8m; D 0.5m) only visible from NE-E-SE. Vegetation indicates the outline of a filled-in fosse from SE-S-W-NW. The undulating interior is clear of vegetation. The outline of the monument is clearly visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 25/03/2017 but not on Google Earth image dated 07/02/2018.
