In flat gently undulating wet pasture at the junction of three townlands (Loughgur, Moohane and Kilcullane) predominantly within Kilcullane townland straddling the townland boundary where the N edge of the external fosse is located within Moohane. The site is located 1km SE of the Carraig Aille stone forts (LI032-053002-/003-) at Lough Gur. The site is part of a complex of archaeological monuments comprising of a ringfort (LI032-071001-) at its centre; outer defensive enclosures (LI032-071002-) surrounding the fort; possible settlement earthworks (LI032-071004-) abutting the SE side and a mound (LI032-071003-) located 30m NW in Loughgur townland. The ringfort (LI032-071001-) is depicted as a circular antiquity (ext. diam. c. 35m) on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Depicted as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 37.5m) on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. O'Kelly (1942-3, 241) described the monument as a 'circular earthen platform surrounded by a fosse, which is continuous. The entrance is not recognisable. The platform is 5' [1.5m] high over the fosse-bottom and the overall diameter is 135' [41m]. Situated in poor low-land'. Outer enclosing elements (LI032-071002-) identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 175; AP 4/3606) as outer double ditched enclosures around a ringfort (LI032-071001-). The defensive enclosures are visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 where the extent of the external defences (LI032-071002-) are visible up to 30m outside the interior of the fort (ext. diam. c. 83m N-S; 73m E-W). The W and NW margins of the circular defensive enclosures have been truncated by later agricultural field boundaries and associated land improvement visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 05/04/2006; 25/03/2017 and 28/06/2018. The latest Google Earth orthoimage taken 20/09/2020 in combination with the Bruff aerial photograph suggests that the site consists of the internal enclosure surround by a bank and two external fosses each with an external bank. In flat gently undulating wet rushy pasture at the junction of Kilcullane townland with Moohane. The site is located 1km SE of the Carraig Aille stone forts (LI032-053002-/003-) at Lough Gur. The settlement remains are part of a complex of archaeological monuments comprising a multi-vallate ringfort (LI032-071001-) at its centre with an earthwork (LI032-071003-) located 30m to NW. The possible settlement earthworks are not depicted on the OSi historic maps. Identified (LI032-071004-) by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 176; AP 4/3606) as a trackway. The settlement earthworks are partially visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 where the extent of the earthworks on the SE side of the ringfort is visible extending 55m to NE; 45m to E and 50m to SE. The site is defined on its NW side by the ringfort (LI032-071001-) and survives S of the modern townland boundary with Moohane, the E and S sides are defined by modern field boundaries that have mostly been removed which partially reflect the earlier archaeological earthworks (ext. dims. c. 134m N-S; 98m E-W). The site is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 05/04/2006; 25/03/2017; 28/06/2018 and 20/09/2020. The possible settlement earthworks are clearest on Google Earth orthoimage taken 25/03/2017. The possible settlement is laid out NE and SW of a road (L. 50m; Wth. 3.5m; orientated NW-SE) leading from the S to the ringfort. Three rectangular enclosures are located S of the road. The W enclosure abutting the external fosse of the ringfort is the largest (ext. dims. 22m NE-SW; 28m NW-SE). The central enclosure (ext. dims. 15m NE-SW; 15m NW-SE) may represent the remains of a house foundation. A smaller enclosure (ext. dims. 11m NE-SW; 7m NW-SE) may also represent the wall footings of a house. The possible house sites to the N are less clear, although there is a rectangular-shaped enclosure (ext. dims. 16.5m NE-SW; 12m NW-SE) abutting the road and several other enclosures and features to the NE between the road and the townland boundary. These earthworks may represent the remains of a medieval clustered settlement. Nave and chancel church ruins described in 1840 as following; ‘The old Church of this Parish is situated in a small graveyard not much used and on level ground in the Townland of Kilkillaun, about three hundred yards west of the River Camog. It consists of a nave and choir. The east gable of the choir is now reduced to the height of four feet [1.2m]; this choir is eighteen and a half feet [5.7m] long by twelve feet ten inches [3.9m]. On its south wall three and a half feet [1m] from the east gable there was a window which is now entirely disfigured. The choir arch, which is eleven and a half feet [3.5m] high by seven feet ten inches [2.4m], is in the pointed style and formed of brown cut stone. The nave is thirty three feet [10m] long by twenty feet two inches [6m]. Of its south wall nine and a half feet [2.8m] in length adjoining the west gable and three feet [0.9m] adioining the middle gable, remain; the rest of the wall is destroyed to the foundation. There were two windows, one on each of the side walls of the nave near the middle gable but they are now totally disfigured. The doorway must have been on that portion of the south wall which is destroyed. There was a window on the west gable which has completely lost its form. The walls are about ten feet [3m] high, three feet [0.9m] in thickness and built of regular sized lime stones cemented with lime and sand mortar’ (OSL, 44). Westropp (1904-5, 447) recorded the following details about Kilcullane Church; 'A parish."Magnahengi, from the ford of Scivil towards to the east, with the whole marsh to Kilkilin and Kealkillin itself," 1185 (Charter of Magio); Kilcallane, 1578 (Fiants, 3250); Kylkyllane, 1586 (Peyton, p. 27); grant of Kilkellan to Edward Browne, 1607 (Patent R.); Cillcaclain, Cathlan's Church, locally Kilkillaun (O'Donovan). Kilcullane Castle described in 1840 as following; 'On the bank of the river (Camoge) east of the old Church (LI032-076001-) and in the same townland, remains the first arch of an old Castle, but the external face of the walls is destroyed. This building measures twenty one feet eight inches [6.6m] by thirteen feet ten inches [4.2mm] and the walls were five and a half feet [1.6m] in thickness (OSL, 44). Westropp (1906-7, 185-6) recorded the following details about Kilcullane Castle; '1244 Adam de Anno held Kilcallan at rent of a soar hawk and ½ mark of silver. Godfrey de Anno was heir (C.S.P.L). 1287 J. Daundon held it from Sir T. de Clare, as of Any manor, at rent of one pair of furred gloves and six pence (1b.). Ralph Brun, of.Kilkelen, fined (1b., 155). The Browne family appear to have held it thenceforward. 1583 T. Browne held Kylkyllane C[astle]. and Camas (Des. R., 67b; Peyton, p. 13; Inq. Exch., 11). 1607 Grant of these to Walter and E. Browne (Pat. R.). 1610 Edm. Baggott and D. O'Grady were granted Kilkillane. 1655 The decayed C[astle]. held by Teige O'Grady (C.S., xxxi., p. 22 ; D.S.A., 38)'. Kilcullane church (LI032-176001-) and castle depicted standing beside each other on the 1654-7 Down Survey map of Kilcullane Parish (NLI, MS 718). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that on the lands of Teige Grady of Kilcullane, there was a 'decayed Castle & 14 Cabins' (Simington 1938, 109).
