- LI024-048: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI024-048----. On a SE-facing slope, in improved pasture and 90m to NW of a townland boundary with Garrison. Depicted as a tree-planted enclosure and not as an antiquity on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Shown on the revised 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped earthwork with ‘Keating’s Well’ 4m to SW. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a circular-shaped area (21m E-W; 20m N-S) defined by the remains of a levelled bank (Wth 7.65m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.05m). There are cattle breaches (Wth 3.4m and Wth 4m) at N and NE respectively and the interior has a gentle E-facing slope. Immediately outside the monument, a broad drain is visible from S-SW, (as depicted on the 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map) which merges with and narrow drain that continues from SW-W-NNW. A subrectangular-shaped plot housing a local authority water supply station abuts the drain to W. Undulations to E and SE of the monument appear to be caused by natural fluvial activity. Monument is visible as a circular-shaped earthwork on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-201, and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. In wet, level pasture, with excellent views of Knockseefin to WNW and 45m NW of a townland boundary with Ballyhurst. A cluster of six possible barrows (LI024-049002-/007-), with enclosure (LI024-049001-) in centre of field. Depicted as a circular-shaped enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Shown on the revised 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped enclosure. Monument described by O’Dwyer (1959, 72) as following; ‘The local name for this site is ‘Rathfaun’. This again is large, the internal diameter being about 200’ (61m) though it is not quite circular. The whole of the interior area is slightly raised above the level of the surrounding field and in the NE quadrant are what appear to be the remains of a circular house 21’ (6.4m) in diameter. The outline of this structure is about 1’ (0.3m) over the level of the garth of the fort. The enclosing bank is denuded to a height of about 3’ (0.9m) and its basal width is about 10’ (3.1m). A 6’ (1.8m) wide gap on the E side may have been the original entrance. The wide ditch, about 18’ (5.5m) across, seems to have a trench connecting it with an adjacent stream as if to enable it to be water-filled. Identified as a large oval-shaped earthwork by the Bruff aerial photographic survey (Bruff 90.1: AP 4/3678) in 1986. Monument surveyed by ASI in 2008 and described as consisting of an oval-shaped area (dims. 54m NW-SE; 44m NE-SW) defined by a bank (Wth 5.9m; int. H 0.25m at E; int. H 0.8m at S; ext. H 1.5m) with external fosse (total Wth 9.3m; basal Wth 2m; D 0.6m) best defined NNW-ESE and outer bank (Wth 8.25m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.4m) visible from ENE-ESE and traceable from NNW-N. Inner bank has numerous breaches (Wth 2.75m) at N; NE; at ENE (Wth 3m) and at SSW (Wth 5m). Slightly uneven within interior and ring-barrow (LI024-8NEW) is off-centre to E. Barrow (LI024-9NEW) to NNE and conjoined barrow (LI024-10NEW) to SW of exterior. Drain running NE-SW with broad bank (Wth 2.2m) on N-side, extends from fosse at N. Ringfort is visible as a large oval-shaped earthwork on ASIAP (118, 6) taken in 2000, on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013, and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a circular-shaped area (dims. 5.0m N-S; 4.75m E-W) to W and a subcircular-shaped area (dims. 3.2m N-S; 2.85m E-W) to E which are conjoined by a fosse (Wth 2.55m; D 0.1-0.3m). The outer bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.05m) is best defined from NE-E-S-SW and is reduced to a low profile bank (Wth 3.05m; int. H 0.05m; ext. H 0.05m) from SW-W-N-NE. Monument appears to be cut into the remains of an outer bank of enclosure (LI024-049001-). Monument is visible as a faint oblong-shaped cropmark (dims. 15m WNW-ESE; 7.5m NNE-SSW) on Google Earth orthoimage taken 25/05/2017. Kilduff Castle described in 1840 (OSNB, Ballynaclogh Parish, 244) as ‘a castlelike house with barbicans at the corners. Its east side is totally destroyed, and its north side nearly so; but its west and south sides are in tolerable preservation. Its windows would indicate it to be an erection of James I. The walls are 6 to 7 feet [2-2.1m] thick. The west and south walls are each surmounted by a chimney. There is a breach in the west gable, extending from near the ground to the top of the window which lighted the second floor. The house is 5 stories high. Q.[ery] Seat of O’Brien of Baile na Cloiche?’. O’Donovan (OSL Ballynaclogh Parish, 426) gave the following details about this structure; ‘the ruins of a Castle-like house said to have been built by the O’Brien’s of Coonagh. Its east side is totally destroyed as is also its north side nearly so, but its west and south sides are in tolerable preservation. The west side of this building is thirty seven feet [11.27m] in length on the outside, and its south side, which was originally something longer, is now forty seven feet [14.32m]. The walls of this building are six feet seven inches [2m] in thickness at the base and the two walls which remains perfect are surmounted with chimnies. There is a breach on the west wall extending from near the ground to the top of the window which lighted the second floor, but it is perfect from that to the top. This building was five stories high and its windows would indicate it an erection of the reign of Jac. I.’. Castle depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Coonagh Barony (Hib. Reg.) standing beside a medieval road running northeast connecting with Coonagh Castle (LI025-002002-) and a cluster of dwellings which are depicted standing close to Kilduff Castle. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Sir Maurice Hurley of Knocklong an 'Irish Papist' was the owner of Kilduff with 'a castle in repaire and a mill [LI024-351----] thereunto belongeing' (Simington 1938, 43). Westropp (1906-7, 104-5) recorded the following details about Kilduff Castle; ‘Moriert Mergagh when slain in the rebellion of Gerald, Earl of Desmond, held Kyllduff C[astle]. (Des. R., 74; Peyton, 241b, in Kylduff Parish in the Toghe of Asgrenan). 1617 Maur[ice]. Hurley of Knocklong C[astle]. held Dromlare or Kilduff (Inq. Chan., 189). 1655 C[astle]. in repair, with a mill held by Sir Maur[ice]. Hurley (B.D., 49; O.S., xxiii., p. 30); confirmed to Edm. Harrison, and in 1667 to Erasmus Smith's trustees (Act Sett.)’. Classified by Donnelly (1999, 31) as a type 4 tower house which are late tower houses belonging to the last phase in the tradition with 'architectural features which tourelles with shot-holes, hood-moulded and mullioned windows, parapet water spouts and cruciform roofs'. Castle described by Salter (2004, 86) as; 'Parts of a tower about 14m long by 10.6m long stand to full height with evidence of four storeys of unvaulted rooms and an attic with windows in gables surmounted by chimney stacks on both the west and south walls. Only the corners had open wall-walks, with a circular bartizan on pyramidal corners at the NW corner. A very damaged square bartizan on the SW corner contained a roof at third storey level. There was a spiral stair in the SE corner and a tier of subsidiary rooms in the east wall. The Hurleys held Kilduff from 1617 until the 1650s, and in 1667 it passed to the trustees of Erasmus Smith's charity schools, from whom it would have been held by tenants'. Situated within large enclosure (LI024-049001-) and one of nine associated ring-barrows of which eight are satellite ring-barrows (LI024-049001-/02-/03-/04-/05-/06-/07-; LI024-288/308----) located outside the large enclosure. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as a low profile circular-shaped area (5.3m NW-SE; 5m NE-SW) defined by a scarp (Wth 0.8-1.15m; H 0.12-0.19m), with fosse (Wth 3.2-3.35m; D 0.14-0.25m) and an outer bank (Wth 3.3-3.95m; int. H 0.14-0.25m; ext. H 0.05-0.15m) which are best preserved from SSW-W-N-E-SSE, levelled from SSE-S-SSW. The interior has a very slight SE-facing slope and is grass covered.
