In pasture, 75m SE of townland boundary with Ballyroe Lower. Not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Shown on the 1897 OSi 25-inch map as a sub-rectangular shaped hollow possibly a small quarry (dims. c. 20m N-S; 14m E-W) of post-1700 date. In 1997, archaeological monitoring of excavations was undertaken by Eachtra Archaeological Projects the resuls of which were summarised as following; ‘No traces of an enclosure site were uncovered during the earth stripping and excavation works. The finds recovered from the topsoil were all post-medieval in date’ (1997). No surface remains visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages. The ruins of Kilfinnane Castle known locally as 'Roche's Castle' stands in the N quadrant of Kilfinnane town (LI048-127----) to the W of Kilfinnane Church (LI048-058----) and graveyard (LI048-109---). In 1837 it was recorded that 'adjoining the church [LI048-058----] are the ruins of an ancient castle, built by the Roches' (Lewis 1837, Vol. 2, 94). The 1654-56 Down Survey map of Kilfinnane parish shows a tower house standing adjacent to a medieval road and close to the ruins of Kilfinnane church and glebe land (NLI, MS 718). According to Westropp (1916-17, 471) in '1350, Walter Purcell held Kilfinnane from John fitzPeter Le Poer, Baron of Donuyll [Dunhill Castle WA025-045001-] (the picturesque rock-fort and castle in Co. Waterford); his heirs were under age'. The Civil Survey of Limerick 1654-56 recorded that Sir Edward Fitz Harris of Chloch an Otfaígh (now Castleoliver), an Irish Papist was in 1640 the owner of 'Kilfynane, Ballinleynye, Ballinro, Ballyriggyne being parte of Moorestowne, Ballyngerodie, and Garrileasy containing two plowlands, with a Castle and an Iron Grate thereunto, Fiftie tatch Houses & Cabbins. A Gristmill, a Tucking Mill [LI056-054----]. A Mill-seate, Court Leete and Court Baron. A Fayre twice a yeare, and a markett once a weeke' (Simington 1938, 246). The terrier of the 1654-56 Down Survey parish map recorded that the parish 'hath also the convenience of a Markett at Kilfinane where is a good Castle and the walls of a Church and an Irish Towne' (NLI, MS 718). Westropp (1906-7, 193-4) recorded the following details about Kilfinnane; ' "Castle Field." Marked. 902 [AD] The great fort of Treada na riogh (Book of Rights) stands near this village. 1350 [AD] Walter Purcell held Kilfinnan from J. f. Peter le Poor, Baron of Donvyll; his heirs were minors (Pipe R.). 1588 [AD] Garrett mac Thomas held Kylfynen; granted to Billingsley (Carew, i., p. 450 ; Fi. 5171). 1590 [AD] Edm. FitzGibbon, the White Knight, was granted the head-rent of Kilfynan in tenure of Ger. mac Richard, and W. Teige (Fi. 5517). 1598 [AD] Mr. Aylmer, who held Kilfinien, left it without men or victual (C.S.P.L, p. 325). 1607 [AD] The manor granted to E. Fitz Harris (Pat. R.), 1657 [AD]. Kilfinane, "where there is a good C[astle], the walls of a church, and an Irish towne." 1666 [AD] The C[astle]. was granted to Rob. Oliver (see also D.S.A., 50, 59; O.S., xxv., p. 25)'. Compiled and revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 22 February 2022 - LI048-058: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI048-058----. The medieval parish church of Kilfinnane, dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle, whose feastday falls on the 30th of November, lies in the parish of Kilfinnane, medieval deanery of Kilmallock (Killocia), in the diocese of Limerick and the barony of Coshlea (Cois Sléibhe). In 1302-06, the Papal Taxation of the Diocese of Limerick valued the 'Church de Kylfynan' located in the Deanery of 'Killocia' (Kilmallock) at 8 marks per annum with the tenth valued at 10s. 8d. (Cal. doc. Ire., Vol. 5, 272). In 1418 the church taxation of the Deanery of Kilmallock recorded the following details about Kilfinnane Church; 'Rectoria ecclesie de Kylfinan abbas de Insula Molanfaid [Molana Abbey, Co. Waterford, WA037-011001-] habet vicarium quem presentat heres Domini George de Rupe. (The rectory of the church of Kilfinnane belongs to the abbot of the island of Molanfaid (an island in the river Blackwater near Youghal), and hath a vicar which the heir of George Roche presents.) The Protestant church now occupies the ancient site. It was dedicated to St. Andrew, 30th of November' (Begley 1906, 257). The 1654-56 Down Survey map of Kilfinnane parish shows a tower house (LI048-057----) standing adjacent to a medieval road and to the W of the ruins of Kilfinnane (Chill Fhíonáin/the church of Fíonán) parish church and glebe land (NLI, MS 718). The terrier of the 1654-56 Down Survey parish map of Kilfinnane recorded that the parish 'hath also the convenience of a Markett at Kilfinane where is a good Castle and the walls of a Church and an Irish Towne' (NLI, MS 718). Around the middle of the 17th century Reverend Dr. Jasper White, pastor of St. John's Parish compiled a manuscript on the taxation of churches in the diocese of Limerick to which he added the list of patron saints and their feastday's. For the Deanery of Kilmallock he recorded the following details about Kilfinnane; 'The church of Kelifinny, or Keilfinine, dedicated to St. Andrew, Apostle, 30th day of November' valued at 10s. (Lenihan 1866, 560). Multi-period church ruins stands in centre of large polygonal shaped graveyard with town house property boundaries forming S side of graveyard boundary wall. The church ruins and graveyard stands on NE edge of the historic town of Kilfinnane (LI048-127----) with Kilfinnane Castle (LI048-057----) to the W. The 9th century Kilfinnane brooch discovered at 'Kilfinan Abbey, Co. Limerick', may have been found in this church and graveyard although it has been suggested that it was discovered on the site of St. Andrew's R.C. Church located 70m to the NW (Ó Floinn 1993, 10). In 1837 it was recorded that 'the church was rebuilt in 1760, and is a large plain edifice' (Lewis 1837, Vol. 2, 94). Present remains consist of a long rectangular building (ext. dims. 23m E-W x 10.5m N-S; wall T 0.88m) aligned E-W with flat-headed bell-cote on apex of W gable, triple light round-headed limestone window below at first floor level, and brick-arched doorway in centre of W gable, 4 round-headed windows (Wth 1.06m x H 1.85m) in S wall, large broken out window (Wth 2.05m) in E gable and no windows visible in N wall. The N wall is supported by three large buttresses (Wth 0.9m; H 3.1m-0.2m; L 2.6m) with sloping top, running out from the external face of the N wall. The medieval parish church of Kilfinnane was modified c. 1760 when four round-headed windows with cut sandstone voussoirs and impost courses were inserted into the S wall replacing the narrower medieval windows, these new windows are similar in style to the mid-18th century Market House of Kilfinnane town located 170m to the SW. The larger window (Wth 1.3m) at the W end of the S wall may have been inserted into the doorway (Wth 2.1m) of the earlier church which was then moved to the centre of the W gable. A large sandstone window (Wth 2.05m) was inserted into the centre of the E gable during these alterations to the church fabric. A projecting string course is visible running along the top of the S wall. A large crack is visible running up the external face of N wall at W end 1m from the NW angle of the church. The triple-light round-headed window at first floor level in the centre of the W wall possibly provided light for a two storey priests residence at W end of church. Wooden beam holes visible in the inner face of the W gable beneath the window may supported a wooden floor of a priests residence rather than that of a gallery. Putlog holes are visible in the external face of the W and E gables. The interior of the church is now inaccessible and is covered with trees and other scrub vegetation. Architectural fragments including the head of a traceried window from the medieval church have been reused as grave markers and are visible in the graveyard to the W and S of the church. Westropp (1904-5, 427) recorded the following details about Kilfinnane Church which was dedicated to St. Andrew; 'Kylfynan, 1291; Kilfennan, 1302; Keilfinny, or Keilfinnane, dedicated to St. Andrew, 30th Nov., 1410. "Kylfinan, the rector is the Abbot of Insula Molanfert", 1418. "It is accommodated with good trouts and eles by ye river Garagh, and it hath also the convenience of a markett at Kilfinane, where is a good castle [LI048-057----], and the walls of a church, and an Irish Towne [LI056-024----]", 1655-7 (D. S. (A), p. 59). Fabric - The I. C. church is on the ancient site, near the great triple-ringed mote [LI056-024----]. The name of Kilfinnane is Drum Fighin in the "Book of Rights," ante 900, given with Treada na Riogh, the triple fort.' See attached Down Survey parish map. It measured 1.13m north-east/south-west by 0.51m by 0.31m in depth and contained four fills. The cut was subrectangular in plan, had vertical sides and the base was inclined slightly towards the south-east. One of these fills included burnt bone, 55 sherds of Beaker and Middle Bronze Age pottery and one piece of struck flint. Two stake-holes truncated the bottom two fills of the pit. The terrier of the 1654-56 Down Survey parish map of Kilfinnane recorded that the parish 'hath also the convenience of a Markett at Kilfinane where is a good Castle and the walls of a Church and an Irish Towne' (NLI, MS 718). 2, 94). Multi-period church ruins stands in centre of large polygonal shaped graveyard (approx. dims. 49m N-S x 62m E-W) with town house property boundaries forming S side of graveyard boundary wall. Architectural fragments of the medieval church have been reused as grave-markers which are visible to the S of the church ruins. The S boundary wall of the graveyard is shown incomplete where it borders onto town house plots on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map with entrance at S opening onto the Main Street of Kilfinnane town. A second possible entrance into the graveyard at SE corner is visible on 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. The 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map shows the opening to the Main Street on S side of graveyard with second entrance located off centre to N on W wall of graveyard which opens onto Castle Lane. The S entrance has been blocked up and the graveyard is now entered through an iron gateway at N end of W wall as depicted on 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. The modern town of Kilfinnane stands on the footprint of a pre-1700 settlement consisting of at least 50 thatched dwellings associated with Kilfinnane Castle, (LI048-057----) Church (LI048-058----) and graveyard (LI048-109----). In 1252 there is a reference to 'Richard Tancard (cf. Tankardstown, near Kilmallock), and the free tenants of Kylfynan' (Westropp 1916-17, 471). According to Westropp (1916-17, 471) in '1350, Walter Purcell held Kilfinnane from John fitzPeter Le Poer, Baron of Donuyll [Dunhill Castle WA025-045001-](the picturesque rock-fort and castle in Co. Waterford); his heirs were under age'. The 1654-56 Down Survey map of Kilfinnane parish shows the castle standing adjacent to a medieval road and close to the ruins of Kilfinnane church and glebe land (NLI, MS 718). The present Main Street may follow the line of the medieval road depicted on the Down Survey parish map. The results of archaeological monitoring of topsoil removal in Kilfinnane was summarised as follows; 'Topsoil-stripping under licence No. 06E1221 by Headland Archaeology Ltd. took place in April 2007 of a proposed Limerick County Council housing development in Kilfinnane, Co. Limerick. Two archaeological features were identified: a subcircular smelting hearth/furnace, 1m long, 0.9m wide with a depth of 0.12m, and a shallow waste pit, which was oval-shaped in plan, 0.9m long, 0.5m wide, 0.1m deep. Prehistoric pottery was recovered from the fill of the later feature' (https://excavations.ie/report/2007/Limerick/0018093/). According to Moloney (2007, 8-9); 'The burnt feature [1002] was likely to have been a smelting hearth or bloomery furnace due to the on‐site identification of a diagnostic piece of slag. The slag appeared to be adhered to burnt soil and was of a highly vitrious globular nature. The high remaining iron content of the other recovered pieces of slag, indicated by their weight, also suggested that the feature was part of the bloomery smelting process. Bloomery furnaces are often limited in the quantity of iron they can obtain from the ore and the slag produced often contains much more iron than the slag derived from a highly efficient process such as a blast furnace. Iron rich slags could also be the result of non‐tapping furnaces however and the recovered slag is unlikely to include a representation of tapping slag. At first it would appear that a smithing hearth would be a more likely interpretation of the isolated feature but if the identification of the bloomery slag is correct and the slag is directly related to the use of the feature then it would suggest the single use of a pit to process ore. This was possibly to reduce the load of an itinerant smith who may also have utilised this method of smelting occasionally. The feature may, although not necessarily, have been located close to the source of ore, either mined iron ore or bog iron. If bog iron was used it is more likely that the furnace was of a nontapping construction. The large quantity of slag and small size of the hearth may suggest that the smelt was a failure and was abandoned. It could also be the case that the hearth had been heavily truncated'.
