- LI040-032: Castle - motte, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI040-032----. Mound described in 1942-3 as following; 'This structure consists of a circular flat-topped mound around which there is a fosse. The sides of the mound are steeply sloped. Its maximum height over the fosse-bottom is 13' [4m] and the overall diameter is 270' [82m]. Running into the fosse on the east side is the remains of a straight fosse or trench. This comes from the bank of the river Camoge, which is only a very short distance from the monument. This is nearly silted up. There is a similar trench running out of the fosse on the west side, and this is also silted up. It is probable that the fosse on the east side brought water from the river to the fosse of the mound. The water was returned to the river by the other trench which connects with a stream, which in turn connects with the river a little further down stream' (O'Kelly 1942-3, 243). Ó Danachair (1955, 216) recorded the following details about the holy well; "St Bridget's Well" on 1840 map. Tradition in the district is unanimous in calling this "St Colman's Well" and not "St Bridget's Well". OSL gives "Tobar Colmain, S. Colman's Well", but OSNB gives "St Bridget's Holy Well". No second well is known in tradition. The well has a good spring of clear water. Formerly a large tree stood over the well, but this has been felled in recent years, and the water piped away to provide drinking water for cattle. All devotion has ceased, although the well was formerly very popular. The water cured eye ailments, and rags were left on the tree as offerings. The Ordnance Survey Letters recorded that this well was 'called Tobar Cholmáin, Saint Colman's Well, which is frequented on Saturday evening, particularly by persons labouring under diseases that effect the eye. Detached eight-bay two-storey country house, built c. 1835, with five-bay side elevation. Hipped roof with rendered chimneystacks. Square-headed window openings. Projecting porch with four Ionic columns and steps up to entrance. Doric style pillared gate lodge within demesne.
