On S shore of Shannon estuary, atop low oval rise (c. 25m E-W; c. 14m N-S) bounded by high-tide shoreline to N and surrounded elsewhere by marshy ground subject to flooding. Rise covered in places by dense overgrowth. Centrally placed along S edge of rise is low rectangular sod-covered platform (c. 10m E-W; c. 8m N-S) in which stones are evident, especially along its edges, but none are mortar bonded and no structural edges are apparent. Further stony banks are evident atop rise but these are largely obscured by overgrowth. Nothing appears to be known of the site's history (Donnelly 1994, vol. 2, 130). On the N side of Prospect Hill. Discovered during the excavation of a short cist (LI018-01102-) in September 1989; it was found 5m NE of the cist (Doody 1992, 220; Doody 1993, fig. 3). A short section of collapsed stone wall (Wth c. 3m) was revealed beneath a covering of peat. This ran in a NW-SE direction, 38m SW of, and running parallel to, another stretch of peat-covered walling (LI018-01107-). There is now no surface trace of this field boundary in a field of reclaimed pasture. In reclaimed pasture, on a S-facing slope just below the summit of Prospect Hill, overlooking the River Shannon to the N. The cist was discovered in the early summer of 1989 during land reclamation, and subsequently archaeologically excavated by Martin G. Doody in September 1989 (Doody 1992; Doody 1993). The cist had been damaged but excavation revealed a rectangular cist (0.83m N-S; 0.43m E-W; D 0.32m) with its sides constructed of six thin sandstone slabs (Doody 1992, 217-8; Doody 1993, fig. 4). This was built in an oval pit (1.24m N-S; 0.79m E-W; D 0.39m). No artefacts, bones or finds of any type were recovered during the excavation. According to Doody (1992, 221) this structure 'falls into the category of short cists as defined by Waddell (1970)'. The excavation also revealed a possible cist (LI018-01104-) 2.5m to the E, a hearth (LI018-01103-) 2m to the S, a short section of pre-bog wall (LI018-01101-) 5m to the NE, and further pre-bog walls and clearance cairns (LI018-01105-, 06-, 07-, LI018-01301-, 02-), and a fulacht fia (LI018-01108-) in an area nearby to the E (see Doody 1993, fig. 2). Discovered during the excavation of a short cist (LI018-01102-) in September 1989; it was found 2m S of the cist (Doody 1992, 219; Doody 1993, fig. 5). The excavation revealed a rectangular depression (0.3m N-S; 0.7m E-W; D 0.11m) containing a setting of stones showing 'some trace of burning' which 'is most likely to have been a hearth site' (Doody 1992, 219). No finds were recovered in association with the hearth. Discovered during the excavation of a short cist (LI018-01102-) in September 1989. This cist it was found 2.5m to the E of the short cist (Doody 1992, 219; Doody 1993, fig. 3). The structure had been heavily damaged during land reclamation, but excavation revealed an irregular-shaped space cut in the bedrock (0.8m E-W; 0.7m N-S) and covered by a large flat slab. No finds of any type were recovered from the site. Discovered during the excavation of a short cist (LI018-01102-) in September 1989; it is located c. 80m NNE of the cist and described as 'a peat covered mound' on E side of access road (Doody 1993, fig. 2). Discovered during the excavation of a short cist (LI018-01102-) in September 1989; it was found c. 65m NE of the cist (Doody 1992, 219-20; Doody 1993, figs 2 & 6). Excavation of the cairn revealed little of its structure which had 'been almost completely levelled' (Doody 1992, 219) except for a basal layer of stones resting on solid bedrock. According to the landowner this feature, before being disturbed during land reclamation, was 'roughly circular in plan with a diameter of c. 4-5 meters and a height of approximately 1 meter above the surrounding bog' (ibid.). Doody (ibid., 220) concluded that this was probably 'a field clearance cairn which had been thrown up before the onset of the peat growth'. A broken hone stone (Doody 1993, fig. 8) was recovered from the cairn fill, though 'its association with the cairn is not certain' (Doody 1992, 220). Doody's map (Doody 1993, fig. 2) shows a 'peat covered mound (levelled)' c. 20m to ENE, a 'peat covered mound' c. 30m to NNW, and a ' low mound' c. 40m to NE of the cairn. There is now no visible trace of these features in a field of reclaimed pasture. On the N side of Prospect Hill. Discovered during the excavation of a short cist (LI018-01102-) in September 1989. In the area E of the cist a series of pre-bog walls were revealed during land reclamation (see LI018-01101- & LI018-01301-; Doody 1992, 220; Doody 1993, figs 2 & 7). This, the best preserved stretch, ran in a NW-SE direction over a distance of 140m. A short section of it was excavated revealing a collapsed wall (Wth c. 4m) covered by 0.5m of peat. The wall core (Wth 1.3m; max. surviving H 0.5m) was constructed directly on an 'old ground' surface 'except where a shallow trench was dug through this, perhaps to serve as a foundation or to mark out the line of the proposed construction' (Doody 1992, 220). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
