In pasture, at base of gentle S-facing slope; immediately W of farmyard. Rectangular area (44m N-S; 46m E-W) with rounded corners enclosed by scarped edge (ext. H 0.4m) W->NNE; earth and stone bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.5m) E->SW with external fosse (Wth 1.1m; D 0.7m) SE->NE. In pasture, atop low hill, in area of limestone outcropping. Circular area (diam. c. 60m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.85m) with external fosse (D 0.35m; Wth 1m). Running concentrically with and immediately outside fosse is stone-faced earthen bank (H 1.5m) which is part of surrounding field boundary system. In rough mountain pasture, on the summit of Knockfeerina. A roughly circular flat-topped cairn of stones (22m N-S; 23.5m E-W; H 3.05m at N; 2.8m at E). On its W edge is an abandoned quarry (8m N-S; 6m E-W) where stones have been removed down to underlying bedrock; there are also some small quarried depressions in the SE quadrant of the cairn. Standing in the E quadrant of the cairn is a concrete cross, erected in 1950. Just inside the N edge at the base of the cairn is an OS trigonometrical station. A telecommunications mast stands 10m to the NW. According to MacNeill (1982, vol. 1, 201-6) Knockfeerina 'is one of the most famous fairy hills in Munster ... and gets its name from the fairy-king Donn Fi(fada)rinne' (ibid., 202). The hill was also 'in olden times' (ibid., 205) the site of a Lughnasa assembly. Associated with this was the tradition 'to visit the hill at least once a year and put a stone on the cairn' (ibid.). Area defined by scarped edge (H 1.8m; Wth 9.65m) WNW->SSW, though base of scarp truncated SE->SSW by remains of field boundary which is shown on 1841 OS 6-inch map. Just E of centre in graveyard (LI030-084002-), ruin of church of which E gable (int. L 5.6m), most of S wall (int. L 18.4m) and part of N wall (int. L 11.6m), all that now stand; outside of walls heavily masked by ivy. Central window in E wall has single round-headed light, front of light has chamfered edge set back 0.08m from actual edge of light; embrasure inside widely splayed including semi-circular arch and base, though latter much broken. Small wall press on either side of window. Both N and S wall have similar and opposite embrasures: window 1.2m from E wall, and taller openings c. 6.7m from E wall. Window in N wall very similar to E window, as is S window though this very ruinous. Outside edge of taller opes entirely missing on both walls and both partially blocked up; both embrasures splay inwards including semi-circular arch overhead; the inside edge stones stop one course short of present ground level but otherwise these opes resemble doorways rather than windows and suggest transepts (complete masking of outside wall faces with ivy obscure possible scars left by transepts). A further ope in S wall reduced to featureless gap in wall. At foot of window near E end of S wall are some footing stones which may be remains of 'stone altar' noted by Molony (1905, 260). Interior clear of overgrowth with recent concrete paths. Earliest headstones noted date to 1790s. Just E-of-centre ruin of Kilmacow parish church (LI030-084001-). In pasture, on terrace in generally N-facing slope. Roughly D-shaped area (straight side 29.5m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 1.15m; Wth 9.15m). Below scarp is terrace (Wth 2.2m) N->ESE, beyond which is ground falls away sharply. Interior is under pasture and level. No trace evident of rectangular church, named 'Abbey (in ruins)' on 1841 OS 6-inch map, which stood in centre of enclosure until demolished c. 1880 (see LI030-085001-). In centre of enclosure (LI030-085001-) no visible surface trace of rectangular structure, named 'Abbey (in ruins)' on 1840 OS 6-inch map. This building was described in 1840 as a ruined rectangular church (17.46m E-W; 5.7m N-S) with walls standing to full height but entirely missing its W gable. It had a single-light window in E gable, a window with a round-headed light and arched embrasure near E end of N wall and an opposite much-ruined window ope in S wall. There was also a much ruined door ope in S wall (OSL vol. 2, 25-6). There was also 'two ambreys in the east, one to each side of the window' (Westropp 1904-5, 410). According to Molony (1905, 261) this building was demolished c. 1880 when the rubble, with that of another building, were used 'for filling up the circular ditch' of the enclosing 'fort'. There was a church at 'Kylmecho' by at least 1319 (Westropp ibid.), however, apart from the round-headed window which might date to that time, the church described above could as easily be 15th century in date. Westropp (1906-7, 225-6) recorded the following details about Kilmacow Castle and bawn; 'An appanage of Keynsham Abbey. 1319 Sybilla de la Chapelle claimed one-third off Kilmecho (Plea R.). 1569 Supple's C[astle]. of Gillemakuo, surrendered (C.S.P.L). 1583 It was held from Earl of Desmond by J. Supple (Peyton, 57b; Inq., Exch., 11,54). "The large square C[astle]. of Killmackwoo,. with nine separate rooms, ruinous in parts. It is surrounded by a strong wall, built strongly for defence." Adjoining were gardens, a rather ruinous water-mill [LI030-187----], orchard, &c. (Des. R., 68). Granted before 1588 by Supple to Billingsley; 1590 by him to Rob. Graves 1593 to Ric. Whittaker; 1598 by him to W. Butler; the C[astle]. being a sufficient residence (Inq. Chan., 6b; Carew i., p. 450); 1623 by Sir J. Dowdall (Inq. Chan, 15a). 1655 W. Butler owned Killmcceow (C.S, p. 43). The Peppard family resided there early in the next century. Fabric - A large bawn, in which is a nearly levelled tower, which, in human memory, had fine mantelpieces. A farmhouse occupies part of the site. It is on the north slope of Knockfeerina'. In low-lying pasture, on level terrace on otherwise gentle N-facing slope. Sub-rectangular area (42m NE-SW; 32m NW-SE) defined SSE->E by an earthen scarped edge (H c. 0.5m) with external fosse (D 0.4m; Base Wth 2m) and counter-scarp bank (int. H c. 0.25m; ext. H 0.75m), truncated E->SSE by metalled avenue leading to farmyard to NE. Scarped edge curves gently SSE->W and NNW->E; straight W->NNW; both corners rounded. Interior raised above level of surrounding terrain, slopes down gently towards centre; sharper fall down towards interior along edge of metalled road; slight uneven depression immediately inside scarped edge to SSE. Scarp and fosse most pronounced on N side. Enclosing element has been levelled SW->W. Dry-stone field boundary overlies counterscarp bank SSE->SSW. Interior, under pasture, slopes down gently to S.
