In rough pasture, on W-facing slope into river valley, immediately below brow of ridge. Circular area (31m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by earth-and-stone bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.05m) best preserved ENE->SE. Bank, which is much eroded, has been stone faced to match adjoining field walls at NW and SE. Parts of enclosing element and interior covered by overgrowth, otherwise level interior is under pasture. Site occupies NE corner of paddock associated with ruinous farmhouse to S. Dip in bank (W 4m; H 0.4m) at ESE. Interior, under pasture, slopes gently down to E. Field boundary kinks gently around enclosure on S side. In pasture, atop low ridge. Oval area (34.9m N-S; 26.6m E-W) defined by scarped edge (H 2.6m; Wth 3.2m) which grades to earthen bank (int. H 0.75m) SW->W and N->ENE. Scarp has near-vertical face which has been faced with stones in fashion of surrounding field boundaries. Facing rises into low wall (int. H 0.4m) atop scarp E->SE. Entrance at SW where there is a gap in scarp (Wth 4.4m) and gradual slope (H 0.65m; Wth 5.45m) up into interior from field level. There is a kink in scarp face at S which contains a blocked-up lintelled recess (H 0.9m; Wth 0.5m, D 0.8m). This faces trackway which skirts enclosure SE->SW but exact nature of recess is unclear. Lismakeery Old Castle described in 1840 as 'a rectangular building, the walls and gables are standing. The west and south walls are about 20 ft. [6m] high; part of the north and east walls are of the same height, but other parts are not more than 10(12) ft. [3-4m] high. It would seem that the entire was much higher formerly' (OSNB Lismakeery Parish, 1249). Westropp (1906-7, 207-8) recorded the following details about Lismakeery Castle; 'An appanage of Keynsham. 1302 Lismaceyre. 1582 Pardon to "W. Lacye, of Lysmakire (Fi. 3842). Jas. Reough Lacy held the C[astle]. (Des. R., 72; Peyton, p. 89). Granted to F. Berkeley, who leased it to Edm. Drew (Fi. 5242). Called Lisvikerry, Lismackerry, Lismacdyrrye (1591 Valor and Inq. Chan., ix., 74). 1615 Maur. Berkeley settled it on his wife with reversion to his brother Henry and their sisters (Deeds, P.R.O.I., p. 58). 1629 Edm. Fitzgerald, of Lissakaire C[astle]. alias Tryenlassamacdirry, or Garrinp'son; he had enfeoffed Edm. Lacy in 1609 (Inq. Chan., ix., 74). 1655 The ruinated C[astle]. held by Lord Brohill (C.S., xxii., p. 71). It was traditionally regarded as a de Lacy C[astle]. in 1840. Fabric - It is quite defaced; the south and west walls 20 feet [6m] high, and barely 12 feet [3.65m] of the other sides (O.S.L., 9, p. 451)'. Castle depicted on 17th century Down Survey map of Connello Barony (Hib. Reg.). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Lord Brohill, am English Proprietor, was the owner of 'a ruinated Castle' on the lands of Lismakeery (Simington 1938, 310). Classified by Donnelly (1999, 22, 37) as a Type 5 tower house which consists of a castle with 'rectangular floor plans each of which is unique to an individual site, though each building had architectural features which placed them firmly within the Irish Gothic tower house tradition'. Castle described by Salter (2004, 90) as follows; 'Most of the vault over the second storey has survived the loss of the NE corner and the removal of the upper levels reached by a straight stair in the east wall from the south-facing entrance. In low-lying marshy pasture, on the W bank of a stream. The Monument, depicted on the 1923 OS 6-inch map as a circular mound (diam. c. 10m), has been levelled. Just N-of-centre in graveyard (LI019-069002-). Roofless ruin of rectangular (20.1m E-W; 8.8m N-S) gable-ended church built of roughly coursed limestone with pinnings; walls partially ivy-clad though much of ivy recently cleared from structure. Doorway is W-of-centre in N wall has segmental arch over doorway; door surround has pointed arch and deep outside chamfer. Lit by four windows: in centre of E and W gables and near W end of both N and S walls. East window is missing its light but embrasure covered by segmental arch; base of light incorporated into an altar that was constructed in the 1980s. Window in W wall is covered by ivy and at attic level. South window is covered by flat arch and single light has ogee-head; N window has lintel covering embrasure and single ogee-headed light. There are two blocked-up presses: one near N end of E wall and the second just E of window in N wall. There is a stone head on outside of W gable, just above and to S of window; head protrudes through ivy. Head is roughly triangular in profile with 'bulbous' eyes and mouth and flat triangular nose. Interior is clear of overgrowth and contains six headstones, the earliest dated 1847, though there is a headstone placed against E wall with date of 1789. In 1840 a 'nearly destroyed small belfry' was noted atop W gable (OSL vol. 1, 140) but this now covered by ivy. Formerly parish church of Lismakeery built in 15th/16th century; it was still in 'good repair' in 1615 (Westropp 1904-5, 393). Just N-of-centre is ruin of parish church of Lismakeery (LI019-069001-). Most recent burials lie N of church. Scattering of headstones S of church date to 19th and 20th centuries. H 0.6m; ext. H 3.4m), with sheer external face, becomes scarp-like along E side. Entrance (Wth 2.9m) at SSW. Fosse is covered with nettles along base and sides. Interior is under pasture and slopes down very slightly to NW. Field boundaries abut bank at NW and SE cutting fosse. Graveyard (LI019-06902-) 10m to N. Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1770, having shallow pedimented breakfront to front (east) elevation, two-bay two-storey addition to rear (west) elevation and lean-to to south elevation. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and render eaves course. Roughcast rendered walls having render plinth course. Square-headed openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and limestone sills. Oculus with fixed window to pediment. Square-headed opening having glazed overlight, sidelights with timber risers and timber panelled door. Flight of concrete steps with metal railings to entrance. Three-bay three-storey building to west having single-bay two-storey addition to east and render crenellations to north elevation. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks. Pitched slate roof to addition with render chimneystack to gable end. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings having limestone sills.
