On pasture at N edge of a ridge running E-W within the demesne lands of Mount Shannon House located 470m to SW. 'Cromwell's Road' (LI006-007----) lies 100m to E. Site inspected by Celie O’Rahilly, archaeologist, Limerick Corporation on 30/09/1997 (SMR File). Not indicated on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map. Annotated 'Lisnagry' on the Cassini 6-inch OS map where it is depicted as a circular shaped platform (approx. diam. 27m) defined by a scarp. Outline of the monument is clearly visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13. Remains consist of a circular-shaped area (approx. int. diam. 29m) enclosed by an earthen bank with external fosse (approx. Wth 6-7m) which is barely visible at SE possibly due to the presence of an original entrance feature. Boundary of property to N cuts across enclosing fosse of ringfort at NW as clearly indicated on Google earth orthophoto taken 19/11/2019. Annotated 'Track of Cromwell's Road' on the first ed. OS six-inch map. The name appears to derive from the activities of General Ireton (Cromwell's son-in-law) in 1651. In advance of a gas pipeline the road was excavated in 1998 by Kenneth Hanley under licence No. 98E0429. The excavator found no surface remains of any road earlier than the 19th-century. The results of the excavation were summarised as following; 'Testing was carried out on the 'Track of Cromwell's Road', Castleconnell, Co. Limerick, in advance of gasworks from Limerick to Ballina, Co. Tipperary, via Castleconnell, Co. Limerick. The road name appears to derive from the activities of General Ireton (Cromwell's son-in-law) in 1651. Two test-trenches, A (1m x 4m) and B (1m x 5m), were tested to a depth of 1m and revealed a similar stratigraphic sequence but no finds. At c. 0.47m below the modern road surface iron panning occurred over a compacted, sandy clay surface. This may represent an original dirt track or road. If this was a dirt track there is no evidence that it was manipulated or altered in any way but was merely used as a routeway. The underlying strata appeared to be sterile natural deposits. The first road surfacing occurred with the insertion of a crude layer of cobbling or metalling, set into a bed of fine sand, probably in the 19th/20th century. Above this was a series of modern tarmac road surfaces. The gas pipeline was monitored through the rest of the roadway (although some areas were drilled), which revealed a similar array of sterile clays. If this was the route taken by Ireton's forces their presence appears to have been marked by name only'(Hanley 2000, 131; www.excavations.ie). - LI006-105: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI006-105----. In low‐lying and poorly drained, rough pasture, with an existing Iarnrod Eireann line to E and house plots to the W, c. 1.5km to SE of the River Shannon. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Identified by Tracy Collins in 2006 during test trenching (Ministerial Direction Order A026, NRA Reg. E2330) prior to the construction of the Southern Limerick Ring-Road and excavated in the same year by Áine Richardson as part of Lisnagry 1 (Richardson 2009, 2). The remains consisted of a fulacht fiadh comprising of a burnt mound (7 m E-W; 6.2 m N-S; D 0.35m) (ibid, 8). The ground formed a slight natural depression at the location of the fulacht fia and the burnt mound material occupied this depression. The mound material was a dark blackish silty clay having frequent heat shattered stone and charcoal inclusions. Charred cereal grains and nutshells were also recovered from a sample taken from this deposit. A charcoal fragment obtained from a sample taken from this deposit was identified as Pomoideae species and was dated to cal BC 1614‐1463 (2σ) (UBA 12347) putting the mound in the Early to Middle Bronze Age (ibid). A probable trough is represented by a rectangular-shaped pit (2.9m NW-SE; 0.9m NE-SW; D 0.22m) was located c. 1m from the N edge of the site. It was filled with loose blackish brown silty clay with moderate heat shattered stone and occasional charcoal inclusions. Charred cereal grains identified as hulled barley were recovered from a sample taken from this deposit (ibid). This was dated to cal BC 1729‐1534 (2σ) (UBA 12346) dating this feature to the end of the Early Bronze Age. See attached location plan from excavation report.
