On a gentle SW-facing slope, in low-lying pasture, c. 0.4km to NE of the M7 interchange at Ballysimon. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Identified by Celie O'Rahilly, archaeologist, Limerick Co. Co., as a small, dark circular-shaped feature visible on OSi aerial photography (Ref. OS 3/9160) taken 1985. Examination of these OSi aerial images was undertaken prior to the construction of the Limerick South Ring Road in the mid 1990s. Visible as a possible circular shaped pond on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 26/05/2004. No surface remains visible of this feature today on Google Earth orthophoto taken 19/11/2019. The aerial photographic evidence suggests that this was a natural pond type feature rather than an archaeological monument. On a gentle SW-facing slope, in low-lying pasture, c. 90m to NE of the Groody River and c. 175m to SE of the M7 interchange at Ballysimon. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Identified in 2001 as a series of pits discovered during topsoil stripping in advance of the Limerick South Ring Road and subsequently excavated (Licence No. 01E0030) (Collins 2001, 4). The features consisted of one large oval-shaped pit (2.1m N-S; 1.6m E-W) which contained occasional charcoal flecks, and eight pits (average diam. 0.4m; D 0.08m-0.2m) concentrated around a flat boulder, each of which contained charcoal and cremated bone (ibid, 21). A second large circular-shaped pit (diam. 0.5m; max. D 0.4m) was c. 100m to E and contained large amounts of cremated human bone and charcoal. In former pasture under the Limerick Southern Ring Road 20m from the townland boundary with Ballysimon. The excavation of a levelled fulacht fia under licence No. 01E0484, identified during monitoring of topsoil stripping, was undertaken prior to the construction of the Limerick Southern Ring Road in June 2001 (Collins 2001; Collins 2003, 242-3). The site was noted as a spread of burnt material (dims. 10m by 8m) centred on a trough feature. The sub-rectangular trough contained the trace of one timber, 1.43m in length, in a very poor state of preservation. Two modern drains were cut into the fulacht fia mound; both were filled with burnt stone. It appeared that the fulacht fia had been levelled during localised land reclamation (Collins 2003, 242-3).
