In pasture, 115m E of townland boundary with Bottomstown. ‘Tobergobban’ holy well (LI040-017----) and graveyard (LI040-018001-) lie 200m to the NE. Annotated ‘Rathanny’ on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map and shown as a circular platform (diam. c. 22m) defined by a scarp, immediately S of a post-1700 field boundary running E-W. Described by O’Kelly (1944, 32) as a ‘Type C Earthwork’ consisting of; ‘A flat topped mound around which there is a berm. There does not seem to have been a fosse. The maximum height is 10’ [3m] and overall diameter is 95’ [28.9m]. A possible cist was recorded by W. Forbes (pers. comm. 26/05/1986) which was described as follows; ‘Cist or stone entrance feature on barrow or rath name ‘Rathanny’ on map in Rathanny townland’ (SMR File). Ó Danachair (1955, 216-7) recorded the following details about this holy well; 'Tobergobbun on 1840 map. "Tobar Ghobain, St Gobban's Well". OSNB. A shallow well, four feet in diameter, with a moderate spring. "This well is remarkable for the curing of many diseases, there is a treasure supposed to be hidden here which is guarded by a serpent". OSNB. No devotions now, but known to have been a holy well. Rounds were made for the cure of eye ailments. A wooden piggin was left at the well for the use of pilgrims'. Described by O’Kelly (1944, 32) as a ‘Type A Earthwork’ consisting of; ‘A circular platform surrounded by a fosse and outer bank. The latter is broken in three places. Outside it is a very slight fosse. The entrance is not recognisable. The platform is about 4’ [1.2m] high and the overall diameter is 120’ [36.5m]. To the S.E and 6’ [1.8m] from the outer edge of the fosse is a small low tumulus consisting of a slight mound surrounded by a fosse. It has no outer bank and its overall diameter is 60’ [18.3m]. Monument visible as circular-shaped platform enclosed by a rush-covered fosse with much denuded outer bank on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-13. The monument is visible on Google Earth orthoimage dated 19/03/2015 with a possible external fosse from SE-S-W-N, intersected at W by a linear cropmark running NW-SE. In reclaimed pasture, immediately N of the Camogue River and W of a stream flowing into the river. Depicted on the Cassini ed. OSi 6-inch map as an oval-shaped platform defined by a scarp. Described by O’Kelly (1944, 32) as a ‘Type A Earthwork’ consisting of; ‘A circular platform surrounded by a fosse. Outside the latter are traces of a bank. It is situated on the bank of a large drainage trench, in the making of which the E half of the platform was entirely destroyed. The approx. overall diameter is 121’ [36.8m], and the height about 3’ [0.9m]. Outside the structure on the N. side is what appears to be a very low tumulus [LI040-299----]. It has no fosse and is 3’ high [0.9m] and 18’ [5.4m] in diameter’. A group of eleven barrows (LI040-026002-; 026004-/026013-) and an enclosure (LI040-026003-) lie to the W. Large impressive and well preserved bivallate barrow (overall diam. 107m) depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a circular-shaped platform (diam. c. 26m) defined by a scarp and wide waterlogged fosse, and wide bank with berm and gap at E, with fosse both of which are transected at E by a post-1700 field boundary running roughly N-S. Remains of a second outer bank are visible from S-W only. The impressive monument is visible on oblique aerial photographs (CUCAP AVT026; AYO038) taken 20/07/1968 and 10/07/1969 and on Archaeological Survey of Ireland aerial images (ASIAP (347) 21) taken 05/01/2003.
