Rathcannon Castle (LI039-027001-) and bawn described by the Ordnance Survey in 1840 as follows; ‘In the townland of Rathcannon on a lofty hill in this parish, are the ruins of an extensive Castle. It consists of an outer wall enclosing a great extent of ground with a square tower and dwelling house now much ruined. The dwelling house is on the west side and is now thatched and inhabited by a poor family. The square tower or castle is in the northwest corner, but only its north wall and a fragment of the west and east walls remain. Its north side measures on the outside thirty three feet seven inches [10.2m] and is at present about thirty feet [9m] in height. The walls of this tower are four feet seven inches [1.4m] in thickness and well built. The east side of the outer wall or bawn of this castle is thirty five paces [27m] in length and the north side forty paces [30m]. The four walls form nearly a square, but they are now so ruined that it is difficult to ascertain their original height or whether they had more than one tower. They are four feet three inches [1.3m] thick and the north wall, which is in tolerable preservation, is not less than seventeen feet [5m] high, but no part of the south wall is more than ten feet [3m] high. At the north east corner there are two flights of stone steps leading to the top of the wall’ (O’Flanagan 1929, 111). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that in 1641 Mrs. Ann Casey, a protestant was the owner of the lands in Rathcannon which contained a 'castle [LI039-027002-] a bawne & an orchard' (Simington 1938, 127). Westropp (1906-7, 168-9) recorded the following details about Rathcannon Castle; 'The C[astle]. is on a bold, rocky ridge, and consists of a walled court, with a square tower to the north-west, and a residence to the west. Rathcannon Castle and bawn (LI039-027001-) described by the Ordnance Survey in 1840 as follows; ‘In the townland of Rathcannon on a lofty hill in this parish, are the ruins of an extensive Castle. The east side of the outer wall or bawn [LI039-027001-] of this castle is thirty five paces [27m] in length and the north side forty paces [30m]. Ann Casey, a protestant was the owner of the lands in Rathcannon which contained a 'castle a bawne [LI039-027001-] & an orchard' (Simington 1938, 127). Westropp (1906-7, 168-9) recorded the following details about Rathcannon Castle; 'A manor of the Earl of Kildare; after the attainder of Silken Thomas, the Manors of Adare, Crome, Rachanan [Rathcannon], and Tobernea were in the King's hands, 1540 (C.S.P.I., p. 254). 1583 J. and Moriert Buy macKynery had been slain at Rachanyn, in rebellion of Gerald, Earl of Desmond (Inq. Exch., 38). 1622 Jas. Casey settled his C[astle]. of Rathcannon (Inq. Exch., 198). 1624 Sir W. Parson held C[astle]. late estate of J. Casey (Inq. Chan., 44, 190). Sir Drury Wray, by his marriage with the eldest dau. of T. Casey (who died 1637), and his wife, Bridget, dau. of Sir J. Dowdall, of Kilfenny, succeeded to Rathcannon (see Trustee Map, 16). Listed by Donnelly (1999, 37) as a Type 5 tower house which consists of tower houses with 'rectangular floor plans each of which is unique to an individual site, though each building had architectural features which placed them firmly within the Irish Gothic tower house tradition' (ibid. 22). In pasture 450m N of a Rathcannon Castle (LI039-027001-). Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Identified as (BGE 3/75/2-3) in 2002 by Ken Wiggins (Licence 02E0119) during topsoil-stripping on the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West. Excavated in 2002 by Kate Taylor under licence No. 02E0498 the results of which were summarised as follows; ‘There were twelve definite cremation burials within the cemetery (1, 3, 5, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 27, 29, 33, 35). All were in similar pits, circular or oval in plan and 0.26–0.9m wide, although most were over 0.4m wide. The profiles varied from steeply concave to more conical; some had possible stake-holes in the base. The pits were 0.16–0.6m deep. The fills of all of the burials were similar: fine, dark brown/black silts with a charcoal component of up to 80%. Small fragments of cremated and crushed bone were evident throughout the fills, generally in greater concentration toward the base. Six of the burials (1, 3, 5, 9, 27, 29) were initially masked by a thin deposit of mid-orange/brown silty clay, which made them almost indistinguishable from the surrounding natural geological deposits. One pit (9), the largest feature excavated, produced a collection of prehistoric pottery sherds from the centre of the deposit. Excavation revealed that the cuts of these pits were carefully executed, with smoothly finished sides and bases in the natural geological deposits. Despite their proximity, most of the pits did not cut each other, suggesting that they had been clearly marked during the lifetime of the cemetery. Two of the burials (35 and 11) cut other features. Pit 35 slightly truncated the eastern edge of Pit 33 and was itself partially truncated by a stone-lined field drain that was visible only in the excavated section of Pit 35. Pit 11 was between Pits 9 and 13, cutting the fills of each, including the masking layer over Pit 9. It is possible, given the perfectly central position of Pit 11, that this truncation was not accidental and was intended to create or illustrate a link between the occupants of the graves. Pit 11 had another unusual feature, a hidden chamber cut into the western side of the main pit, undercutting the natural surface. The hole was c. 0.25m in diameter, the minimum size for an adult hand to excavate. A high concentration of bone fragments was noted in this chamber, suggesting that a handful or bag of cremation residue was deliberately placed there. Two possible blind burials (7 and 31) lay at the edges of the complex of burial-pits and were similar to these features in all respects other than the absence of cremated bone and the smaller charcoal component. It is possible that these features were symbolic interments without any human remains. Certainly, the pits appear to have been treated in the same manner as the burials, with Pit 31 being masked. Alternatively, these may represent the holes for timber posts marking the location of the cemetery. The stake-holes (19, 21, 23, 25) were at the eastern and southern edges of the complex. They were circular, with diameters of 0.07–0.1m, and were 0.05–0.1m deep. It is possible that they held markers for the cemetery boundary; however, given the size of the features, any stakes would have been small. An assemblage of pottery was recovered, both during excavation and from the soil samples (100% of each burial was sampled). Anna Brindley has examined part of the assemblage: 35 fragments from the largest cremation pit, 9. These have been shown to represent a single (incomplete) vessel of Middle–Late Bronze Age date (Taylor 2004, 340-2)’. A radiocarbon date of determination on charcoal from one of the burials gave a date of 1520-1210 cal. BC (Taylor, 2003, 27). Monument has been fully excavated and is not visible on aerial images. Identified as BGE 3/75/4-5 in 2002 by Ken Wiggins (Licence 02E0119) during topsoil-stripping on the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West. Excavated in 2002 by Brian Halpin under licence No. 02E0394 the results of which were summarised as follows; ‘Topsoil-stripping of Bord Gáis Éireann’s Pipeline to the West in Rathcannon townland, Co. Limerick, uncovered a single pit measuring 1.12m east–west by 0.61m. The cut was sub-oval with a shallow and generally flat base. It had two fills. The upper was dark grey, silty clay with minor amounts of charcoal and sandstone; the lower was a brown/grey silty clay that was very rich in charcoal. There was no indication of in situ burning in the feature. Topsoil-stripping in the same townland uncovered two shallow pits. They were not associated with any other features. The pits were next to each other and aligned north–south. Both were subcircular and exhibited a gradual U-shaped cut in the yellow/orange boulder clay. They measured 1.4m east–west by 1.2m–1.5m. The fills were an almost identical, charcoal-rich, silty, sandy clay with burnt and heat-shattered sandstone. This is indicative of the fill of a fulacht fiadh, in which the local landscape is rich. It is not known whether these pits were purposely dug or natural depressions. There was no evidence of in situ burning (Halpin 2004, 342)’. It was irregular in both plan and profile, measured at least 1.24m north–south by 0.79m and was 0.42m deep. The base and northern edge of the feature could not be clearly established. No artefacts were recovered during the excavation, and no samples were taken. It is thought that the remains represented a small pit or post-hole that had been damaged by an animal burrow. It is also possible that the entire feature was a product of animal activity without the intervention of human agency (Taylor 2004, 342-3)’. Identified as BGE 3/76/19-20 in 2002 by Ken Wiggins (Licence 02E0119) during topsoil-stripping on the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West. Excavated in 2002 by Kate Taylor and Liam McKinstry under licence No. 02E0497 the results of which were summarised as follows; ‘Nine cut features and two spreads were recorded. The eastern part of the site showed a series of stratified remains with three phases of activity. The features in the western area could not be assigned to these phases but are thought to be broadly contemporaneous. The earliest phase in the eastern part of the site was represented by two small pits, a short length of gully and a small spread of material. These were followed by a curvilinear gully that cut several of the earlier features. Covering all of these deposits was an earthen bank, also visible in the adjacent fields, an element of the surrounding abandoned field system. No associated ditch was evident, but this may be due to modern truncation of the area. The western features could not be assigned to any phase, but it is probable that they were related to the eastern features. There were five pits in this area. Two small, isolated pits contained silty fills including a moderate amount of animal bone and a small piece of iron slag. The remaining pits, however, appeared to have had an industrial purpose. They were distinctively circular, with deep bowl-shaped profiles, and the fills contained high quantities of burnt stone, charcoal and ash-like material. There was also, in one case, evidence of in situ burning. Finds from these pits were a large quantity of animal bone and a piece of what appeared to be metalworking residue, probably lead run-off. Although no directly datable artefacts were recovered, the fresh appearance of the animal bone collected from all phases and areas of the site suggests that the material is late medieval or post-medieval. The limited evidence of metalworking is curious as it suggests an industrial element to the activity, in contrast to the domestic appearance of the animal bone assemblage. Analysis of the residues will allow greater interpretation of the industrial activities. It is also hoped that further research will provide information on the date of the field system and hence the features lying below the earthen bank (Taylor and McKinstry 2004, 343)’. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
