Church described in 1840 as following; ‘Of the old church of Robertstown, situated in the townland of that name, the walls are perfect. It is 37 ft. [11.27m] long by 19½ [5.85m] in breadth. The window on the East gable which is now disfigured, was formed of brown cut stone on the outside, as appears from 5 of the stones which remain on the north side: these stones have the appearance of great age. On the S. side wall, 2 feet [0.6m] from the E gable, there was another window, which is now completely disfigured. The door-way situated on this wall 8 ft. 8 in. [2.64m] from the west gable, is broken on the inside. On the outside where it is in the pointed style and formed of cut limestone, it is 6 ft. [1.8m] high by 3 ft. [0.9m] in width. On the North wall there was another doorway, the sides of which are broken away; the arches remain both inside and outside, being formed of thin stones. The walls are about 14 ft. [4.26m] high, 3 ft. [0.9m] in thickness and built of large irregularly laid with lime and sand mortar. There is a large graveyard, not much in use at present attached to this church’ (OSL vol. 2, 12). Westropp gives the following details on Robertstown Church; ‘A parish in Shanid. Capell Roberti Guer, 1291; Castell Rob de Gore, or Gauyr, and Capell Robti Gore, 1410. Castri Robti Goer, 1452 (rental). The prioress of St. Catherine (Old Abbey) failed to present Norman fitzRichard to this church, 1306. The prioress of St. Kathine de Okonyl has presentation to the vicarage of Roberdes Castel Goer chapel, 1318 (Plea. R. 119 of xi Ed. IL, m. 18). Ballyrobert impropriate to crown in right of Monastery of Negelagh, 1584 (Desmond Roll). It was probably founded by the earlier Robert de Guer, who lived 1201-1220. The later Robert Guer was living 1290-1310; each was contemporary of a Robert Dundonell; the earlier of these founded Castle Robert Dundonill church’ (Westropp 1904-5, 394-5). In 1964 'over thirty skeletons were discovered, buried in a low gravel-ridge' (Danaher 1964) during quarrying operations. Most of these were removed prior to the site being archaeologically investigated, and the topsoil removed so that 'it was impossible to ascertain if there had been any surface indications of the graves' (ibid.). Investigations revealed 'a further seven skeletons, all of adults, in four separate graves, close to one another and all orientated East-West' (ibid.). There were no grave goods. The conclusion was that these were burials 'from the Christian Period' and, because they were buried in unconsecrated ground, 'the result of a plague or famine in the area' (ibid.). This area is now part of an industrial complex. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - LI010-142: Burnt mound, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI010-142----. A spread of burnt-mound material excavated by Emer Dennehy (02E0832) and described as 'a subcircular, grey/brown, silty clay patch with charcoal flecking, measuring 1.2m north-south by 0.8m. Further investigation revealed a pit 0.3m deep. Five stakes, averaging 0.08m in diameter and with a maximum depth of 0.25m, were driven into the base of the pit. All of the stakes-holes were filled with the same charcoal-rich, silty peat, indicating that they were likely to have been burnt in situ. Subsequently the pit had been left open and filled naturally over time. Although there is no clear indication of function for this pit, it can be concluded that there was deliberate human action and forethought involved in the use of the site.' A ringfort (LI010-068----) lies c. 100m due W and a church and graveyard (LI010-069001/002-) lie c. 165m to S. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Identified in 2001 by Lar Dunne, as three conjoined penannular enclosures, as part of an archaeological assessment (Dunne 2001, 2). Described as three penannular enclosures visible on aerial photography and an EDM survey, which was analyzed as part of the assessment (Dunne, 2 and 7-8). This triple conjoined monument is visible as an obvious cropmark of a penannular enclosure (dims. 27m NW-SE x 23m NE-SW) which is open to SW. A faint cropmark of a second pennanular enclosure adjoins to N and is open to NW. The barely traceable cropmark of a third penannular enclosure adjoins to ENE and is open to E. On the ground, the enclosures have a relict profile yet are easily visible above the present ground level (Dunne, ibid). Only the southern-most cropmark is visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and Google Earth orthoimages taken 20/10/2010 and 08/04/2015. See attached Google Earth orthoimages and plan extract of the three conjoined penannular enclosures transcribed from aerial photographs, in test excavation report.
