R., 3b). 1612 J. Stritch held the C[astle], bawn, water-mill, and two weirs at 'ambo skules," in fee; his son W. succeeded (Inq. Chan., Car. I., No. 89). 1624 Sir W. Parsons held the two Skulls, late estate of Alderman W. Stritch (Pat. R.). 1639 James held the C[astle], bawn, and mills, "in duobus Skules" (Inq. Chan., 234). 1657 C[astle]. held by W. Hurley. 1666 Scuill and Ballyneety confirmed to Capt. A. Ormsby. 1680 Capt. Ingoldesbye held it. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that on the lands of William Stretch late of Limerick there stood in Scoole 'a Castle, a Mill Seate [LI022-106002-] & 8 Cabbins' (Simington 1938, 107). This fort is in the centre of a complex of ancient field fences which run in various directions over the hilltop on which it is situated. Two of them join into the rampart, one on the west side, the other on the S.W.' (O'Kelly 1942-3, 230). Outline of cashel with circular-shaped annexe or quarry to NW clearly visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs. Possible internal bank and internal circular enclosure' ; the morphology of this enclosure indicates that it may be Bronze Age in date (ibid.). Monument is visible as a substantial rectangular-shaped cropmark (72m E-W; 47m N-S) with a rectangular-shaped enclosure (66m N-S; 47m E-W) adjoining to E, on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13. The monument is not visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 01/10/2015.
