The application site is principally bounded by an existing internal access road to the north; by the existing Emergency Department and Renal Department to the south; by the existing hospital to the east and by St. Nessan’s Road to the west. The Hospital Chapel within the Hospital Campus is a Protected Structure (RPS. Reg. 1649). No works are proposed to the Protected Structure as part of this application. The development will consist of: demolition of the existing pedestrian access ramp and generator compound; the provision of a new double basement car park and the commencement of car parking use at the basement levels (Level -2 and Level -1); the provision of a department shell comprising medical floorspace at ground floor level (Level 0) and first floor level (Level 1) (c. 5,462 sq m); the provision of 2 No. stair cores which will provide access to all proposed floor levels (Level -2 to Level 1) and to facilitate access to future upper levels; and the provision of hospital streets connecting the department shell to the existing hospital. The proposed development has a total gross floor area of c. 11, 262 sq m (including basement) and will link to, and integrate with, the existing University Hospital Limerick. Access to the basement will be via the existing basement car park to the south, which connects to the existing main entrance of the Hospital Campus. Construction access will be via the main roundabout on St. Nessan’s Road. Construction traffic will temporarily exit the subject site from the existing emergency gate which will be widened to enable same (or from a location nearby by this gate). Situated in the green area of a recently-built housing estate. A sub-circular area (diam. 37m N-S by 0.30m E-W) is enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H. 0.45m; ext. H. 1.2m Wth1.5m). The bank is best preserved from ESE to SSW and from WSW to NNE. The exterior of the bank has been encroached on by a wall in the SW and by tarmac from ENE to ESE. Shrubs have been planted in various locations on the bank and a broadleaf tree has recently been planted in the interior. Located atop a low hill in undulating, unused land, W of the wall of a large housing estate. The monument is heavily masked by dense scrub vegetation cover. It is on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as a sub-oval area (diam. c. 50m N-S by c. 60m E-W) enclosed by two concentric banks with the whole site enclosed by a field boundary. The site was excavated in 1973 and 1974 by Elizabeth Shee Twohig. She found that the bank appeared to have been 'faced with a wall of stones most of which slipped suddenly and cleanly into the ditch.' A complex arrangement of post holes and pits, and evidence of a wattle-built structure which had apparently been burned in situ were recorded. It is depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as an incomplete embanked sub-oval area (diam. c. 60m N-S by c. 50m E-W) defined by a scarped edge from W to NNW and NNE to ESE, and enclosed by a bank from W to ESE, with no enclosing or defining element from NNW to NNE. A field boundary impacts on the bank from SW to SE. The monument has been levelled. A gentle oval depression (diam. 27m NE-SW; D 0.2m) is visible on the ground at this location with traces of a bank (int. H less than 0.1m; Wth.1.2m; ext. H. 0.2m) from NE to SE.
