Situated in E quadrant of Castleconnell graveyard, 15m E of the 19th century C of I church are the poorly preserved remains of the medieval parish church of Castleconnell. All that survives is a short section of the E end of the S wall (L 6.8m; H 2.5m; Wall T 0.85m) of the church and partial return of the E gable (L 1.6m). A broken out window embrasure is visible in upstanding section of S wall with pointed piscina (H 0.68m x Wth 0.4m x D 0.4m) to E close to SE angle of church. No wall footings of church visible elsewhere as this area is covered with post-1700 memorials. A late 16th/early 17th century round-arched doorway with punch dressed jambs and hood-moulding above has been inserted into the W gable of the C of I church where it is now used as the main doorway into this church. The jambs of the doorway display decorative punch dressing in a chequerboard fashion. The church is depicted on the 17th century Down Survey map of Clanwilliam Barony (Hib. Reg.) on the parish map of Stradbally (NLI, MS 718). Westropp (1904-5, 435-6) gives the following details about Castleconnell Church; 'A parish in Clanwilliam. The church is called Idumyn, 1302; Castleconnell, alias Stradbally, alias Capella de I'dum, 1615; Idumyn, alias Stradbally rectory, impropriate to the Earl of Ormond, 1633. Donald O'Mullyyn was Vicar of Castra Conayng, 1412. The I. C. church is on the old site, as shown in 1657 (D.S. (A), 2, 15). Medieval parish church ruins (LI001-002001-) of Castleconnell stand in the E quadrant of the old rectangular-shaped graveyard (approx. dims. 45m N-S x 68m E-W) which is enclosed by a post-1700 stone wall. A 19th century C of I church stands in the W quadrant of the graveyard which has been extended to the N and E creating a much large rectangular-shaped graveyard (approx. 91m N-S x 145m E-W). The graveyard contains memorials dating from the 18th century to the present time. Late 16th/early 17th century round headed doorway incorporated into W gable of 19th century All Saints' C of I church which stands in the W quadrant of a graveyard (LI001-002002-) in the village of Castleconnell. This doorway may have been taken from the ruins of the medieval church (LI001-002001-) located 15m E of the C of I church and reused as the W doorway of the C of I church which was built in 1809. Alternatively the 19th century C of I church could incorporate the remains of a 17th century church that replaced the medieval church and which was then rebuilt in 1809 incorporating the doorway from the earlier 17th century church. This late 16th/early 17th century round-arched doorway has punch dressed jambs with hood-moulding above and is now used as the main doorway into All Saint's C of I Church. The jambs of the doorway display decorative punch dressing in a chequerboard fashion. The C of I church was described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as a 'Freestanding gable-fronted Board of First Fruits style Church of Ireland church, built in 1809, enlarged in 1826, and in 1844 and may also incorporate earlier fabric. Comprising crenellated apex to gable front, octagonal limestone spire with cast-iron finial to front (west) elevation, five-bay nave having gablets, and three-bay single-storey L-plan vestry to north elevation. The form and massing of this well composed church is in keeping with the standard plan promoted by the Board of First Fruits. It is distinguished, however, by well crafted features such as the ornate limestone tower and unusual gablets. The church was enlarged to the north in 1826 and 1844 by James Pain' (www.buildingsofireland.ie, Reg. No. 21807027). In pasture, on the grounds of Castleoaks House Hotel, overlooking the River Shannon to W. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. An opening into a subsurface corbelled passage running W was discovered around 1987. Field subsequently developed as a pitch and putt course and precise location of underground passage is now unknown (O’Rahilly 2000). Site assessed as part of a proposed residential and hotel suite development in 2001 (Byrne 2001). Two phases of pre-development testing (2002) and a subsequent monitoring brief (2003) were carried out in the vicinity of the monument, yet nothing of archaeological significance was noted (Collins 2002; 2002; 2003). Area of monument now appears to have been developed as a housing estate which is visible on Digital Globe aerial photography taken 2011-13. Compiled by: Alison McQueen, and Vera Rahilly Date of upload: 18 June 2020 - LI001-008001: Burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI001-008001-. Archaeological testing (03E0214) was carried out in advance of the construction of three dwelling-houses, entrances and associated works at Stradbally North, Castleconnell. The development lay within SMR 1:8, classified as a burial ground. The site had already been subject to two investigations in 1974 and one by Brian Hodkinson in 1990 (Excavations 1990, No. 85). Eight trenches were excavated during the course of testing. A number of archaeological features were observed, including small pits with animal bones, a pit with charcoal concentrations, and quantities of disarticulated human and animal bone. Six articulated human burials were uncovered, and three grave-cuts, which it is supposed contain further articulated remains. This site was subsequently excavated by Frank Coyne (03E0214). The subsequent excavation revealed the burial of at least thirteen individuals. Ten articulated skeletons, which appeared to have been buried in haste, were recovered, along with a significant volume of disarticulated human remains representing at least three other individuals. Preliminary analysis of the recovered skeletons indicates that there were three female adults, six male adults and one juvenile. It was noted that one of the young males had suffered a fracture to the right femur close to the time of death. Spinal disease was also observed on a female adult. One individual seems to have been wrapped in a winding sheet, whilst others appear to have been buried in a shroud, secured at the hands and feet. The burials in general were oriented north-east/south-west. No structure was identified during excavation; however, the road immediately to the west is known as Chapel Hill and, according to local information, a church had existed at the site of the nearby old schoolhouse. Sixteen finds were taken from the site, including a 15th-century silver penny, a number of iron and copper alloy belt buckles, a bronze mount with gold gilt and two pieces of post-medieval pottery (www.excavations.ie). - LI001-008002: Metalworking site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI001-008002-. In burial ground (LI001-008001-), approx. 120m S of the River Shannon. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. According to local information, the burials are understood to form part of a famine plot. Trial trenching of the burial ground revealed a thin deposit of charcoal and iron slag under a thick layer of redeposited boulder clay (Hodkinson 1991). No dating evidence was available in the deposit, however it was deemed to pre-date the burials (ibid). The site documentation and a sample of the slag are housed in the Limerick Museum. Site now appears to have been developed as a small housing estate that is visible on Digital Globe aerial photography taken 2011-13.
