Holy Well locally known as 'Tiobrait Well'. One of three wells of which only one has curative powers which is known as 'St. James' Well'. In 1955 Ó Danachair described the site as; 'A well about six feet in diameter and four feet deep. Elder, ash and whitethorn trees grow about it. Rounds are still made, rags and small religious objects left as offerings. The water cures sore eyes and headaches. Pebbles are used to count the rounds. Formerly a pattern was held on 25th July. Legends: The water will not boil. The well moved when profaned. A fish is seen by those about to be cured. Tervoe had a pattern on 25th July (St. James the Greater)(Ó Danachair 1955, 198, 214). The following folklore was recorded in 1938 from Tervoe National School about St. James' Well; 'It is said that the time for visiting this well is from midnight on the 24th July to midnight on the 25th. The rounds are made by people suffering from eye trouble. There was a great many people in olden times who used to visit the well. At each visit you are supposed to wash the eyes with a piece of cloth and the holy water from the well. It was the custom to leave the cloth on the bush overhead. But there are no offerings left there in thanksgiving for cures' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0527, 367). A second tradition recorded that; 'St James's Well is rather big. There are many trees growing over and about it - an elder tree overgrown with ivy is overhanging the well and whitethorn grows round it. On the trees there are pieces of cloth hanging. They leave those pieces of cloth on the tree when cured in honour of St. James. People do not use this water for household purposes because it is said that some misfortune would happen to you. Long ago people went to that well to be cured. They also go up to the present day but not so regularly as in olden times. People visit it during the month of July. Some bathe their eyes in the water and others rub some of the leaves that are around the well to their eyes. A man was cured long ago. Pat Byrnes was his name, he is dead now. During the month of July he used to get up at 3 o'clock in the morning and do the rounds. He had turned eyes and after doing the rounds about six times day after day his eyes were cured. The prayers said are 5 Our Fathers 5 Hail Marys and five Glorias ten times each morning and every ten of those they said they used to hang a piece of cloth on the tree and now it is full of them. Many other people's eyes were cured there also' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0527, 367-8; accessible online at www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4922111/4853090/5015953). Another tradition recorded that, 'Every year on the 25th of July rounds are paid at the well. Every person who goes throws a pebble in to mark the rounds. Nobody likes to cut bushes around it. There are two other wells near it for household use. Long long ago there used to be tents at the well on the feast of St. James. It is said that one day the people of the well had a fight and that St. James separated them' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0527, 369; accessible online at www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4922111/4853092). In gently undulating pasture. Depicted on the 1841 ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 35m). St James’s Well (LI004-017----) lies 110m to W. The remains of a much degraded ringfort comprising of a raised circular-shaped platform defined by a significant ditch (Shanahan 2008, Section 3.10). There is no evidence of an enclosing bank, however an arcing section of earthen field boundary from NW-N-NE may represent the remains of such (ibid). Two pits were uncovered approx. 40m to W of monument, during test-trenching (Shanahan 2008). A circular-shaped pit (1.2m E-W; 0.74m N-S) and a second similar pit (0.6m E-W; 0.4m N-S) which are located 6.5m apart (ibid., Section 5.5). They had vertical sides, a slightly rounded base and both contained a single fill of dark-grey sandy silt with a moderate amount of charcoal flecks, burnt and vitrified stone (ibid.). These are assumed to be contemporary with the ringfort due to their close proximity. The monument is visible as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork on Digital Globe imagery taken 2011-13 and Google Earth aerial photography. On a low rise, at NW edge of a quarry associated with Limerick Cement Factory, overlooking the River Shannon to N and E. Depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a circular shaped platform. Shown on the OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped tree-planted sunken hollow (approx. 25m NE-SW; 22m NW-SE). Levelled monument described in 1994 as a faint trace of a curvilinear mound which is currently defined by field clearance material that has accumulated around an ESB pole at this point (Celie O’Rahilly Field Report 1994). According to O’ Rahilly any ringforts in this area are likely to have been stone built given that limestone occurs at such a high level below the ground surface (ibid). The extant remains may represent a levelled cashel. Monument has been quarried away and the site is now located in the centre of a large opencast quarry as shown on Google Earth orthoimage taken 19/11/2019. On reclaimed intertidal marshlands, near the present bed of the River Shannon. Identified as a possible timber trackway which was uncovered during reclamation works along this portion of the river. Described along with the find of a Viking sword in 1958 as following; ‘trunks of oak trees laid flat in one direction, 16 feet [4.9m] under the surface (NMI Topographical Files, 1958). It has been suggested that it may have formed a causeway to Muckinish, further to N. Listed as ‘Cooperhill 1’ by O’ Sullivan (2001, 309) who described the site as following; 'An iron Viking Age sword was found on the S bank in 1958, at a depth of 16ft, on a substantial causeway of 'oak trunks all laid flat in one direction' beside a creek. The brief description of the findspot and the depth at which it was found suggests that this was a wooden trackway or boat-hard in a saltmarsh creek. (NMI files.) Not visited'. In undulating pasture on a slight S-facing slope, excellent views in all directions. Irregular undulations in vicinity of site, no enclosing element visible. Identified as Site No. 1 in 1994 by Celie O’Rahilly during field survey and described as following; ‘Low circular feature, approx. diam. 45m. Situated on a gentle south facing slope, green pasture, was mixed woodland. Located c. 10m north of the old boundary wall of the orchard of the modern Conigar House. The latter is not marked on the first edition of the map, and the orchard is not marked on the current edition’. Site was inspected in 2001 and no surface remains were visible.
