In level pasture, at W side of Holly Island inlet on S shore of Shannon estuary; within enclosure (LI010-048004-) which also includes ruined hall house (LI010-048003-). Built of uncoursed limestone in a lime mortar; W gable and surviving walls are all heavily encased with ivy. Consists of nave (int.: 10.22m E-W; 5.5m N-S) with chancel (int.: 4.41m N-S) added at E end. All quoins of nave are missing; foundation plinth now exposed along outside of N wall. Wide breach in S wall (Wth 5.13m) is former door position; most of E wall is missing. East end of chancel is reduced to rubble but side walls, which abut E wall of nave, partially survive. Side wall on S side now terminates at ingoing of window ope. Interior of nave covered by mature elder tree, and otherwise overgrown with nettles. Ruin of parish church of Tomdeely. Tomdeely was a manor of the Bishop of Limerick from the early 13th century but had became Desmond property by the 14th century (Westropp 1904-5, 393; Westropp 1906-7, 206). The church is clearly of two phases; the surviving structure is featureless but the earlier nave is at least 15th century in date. Westropp recorded the following details about Tomdeely or Dromdeely; 'A parish. Tonndaily, 1201; Drumdell and "Orundell," granted by Hen. Mineter to Bishop Hubert, c. 1223 (B. B. L., xl.). The lands were granted to Margery, widow of Tyrry de Kardyff, 1251 (lb. xix.). It was the Bishop's manor, 1252 {lb. xviii) and 1336 (rental); Drimdel, 1281 (Pipe Roll, 13) ; Arundel, 1302; Dromdily, or Dromdelthy, 1410; Drumdyll, in Ardacha, and Drumdele, in Rathgell, 1336, 1420 (rentals) ; Dromdelie, 1615 b. In 1840 it was locally Tom-dhaoile, the bush (not mound or ridge) of the Deel (O'Donovan). Fabric - The church is late fifteenth-century with a nave and chancel 34 feet [10.36m] by 24 feet [7.31m], and 21 feet [6.4m] by 15½ feet [4.6m]. The sides, 10 [3m] and 12½ feet [3.7m] high ; all the features are defaced ; the chancel arch has fallen, and the graveyard is desecrated and tilled (O. S. L., 9, p. 443). A group of pillar-stones stand near Knockeegan fort, near the mouth of the Deel, perhaps at the "Tom," or tumulus of the placename' (Westropp 1904-5, 393-4; OSL vol. 1, 444-5). In 1906 the following details were recorded; '(Tomdaile, The Bush of the river Deel), now Toomdeely, a parish north-west of Askeaton and bordering on the Shannon. The ruins of the old church do not seem to be older than the fifteenth century. This parish was one of the bishop's manors' (Begley 1906, 111). In level pasture, at W side of Holly Island inlet on S shore of Shannon estuary; within enclosure (LI010-048004-) which also includes ruined hall house (LI010-048003-). Surrounding ruin of Tomdeely parish church (LI010-048001-) is roughly rectangular area (c. 65m E-W; c. 30m N-S) in which church is located slightly E-of-centre. Area defined by earthen bank (H 0.6m; Wth 2m) which follows straight line on N and W sides but is more curvilinear to E and S. There is clear break in bank on N side opposite chancel of church (Wth c. 4m); the bank is not present for length of 15.6m at N end of E side. There is a short length of stone facing evident (H c. 0.6m) on outside of bank towards E end of N side. The enclosure is presumably that of graveyard surrounding the church though there are no evident burial plots of grave markers; in 1840 it was reported that the 'grave yard was tilled and is now part of a green field' (OSL vol. 1, 137). Tomdeely was a manor of the Bishop of Limerick from the early 13th century but had become Desmond property by the 14th century (Westropp 1904-5, 393; Westropp 1906-7, 206). The basic structure is probably 13th century with the vaulting inserted in the 15th/16th century. In level pasture, at W side of Holly Island inlet on S shore of Shannon estuary; within enclosure (LI010-048004-) which also includes ruined parish church of Tomdeely (LI010-048001-). Rectangular two-storey structure (internally: 17.6m E-W; 8.15m N-S) built of uncoursed limestone covered by roughcast harling; walls now partially ivy-clad. The N, E and S walls end at same height but W wall stands slightly higher; W wall also slightly thicker (T 2.35m) than other three walls (T 1.8m); both factors explained by mural stairs contained within W wall (see below). Prominent base batter at ground-floor level, lower half almost entirely robbed out. All four external corners have chamfered profile down to top of batter; chamfer then narrowed to a point about half-way down battered face. Covering most of ground floor are two parallel wicker-centred vaults (axis E-W) supported centrally by arcade of six open bays. Vaulting does not cover westernmost end (2.9m E-W) of ground floor which is separated from vaulted area by cross-wall (T 1.5m) which contains narrow linear mural stairs. Vaulting, arcade and cross wall are all secondary insertions. Ground floor has seven original window embrasures: three in N wall, two in S wall and one each in E and W wall; all are heavily robbed except for W window which has tall narrow flat-headed light (now blocked up). A large gap to W-of-centre in S wall was doorway as rear end of a drawbar socket survives on E side. The eastern two thirds of first floor lit by five much-ruined window embrasures (with plank-centred arches), all missing their light surrounds: one is central in E wall, the others in two roughly-opposite pairs in N and S wall. West-of-centre in N wall is a doorway retaining much of its outer door surround; this has a semi-circular arch which, as with the square jambs, is composed of plain limestone blocks. Opposite it in S wall is an almost completely ruined doorway (drawbar socket on E side). Near N end of W wall is door gives access to a small mural chamber containing a garderobe; the chamber is covered by lintels but much of its walling has fallen. Near S end of W wall is door gives access to a mural stairway rising steeply up to NW corner of building; this appears to have given access to an attic floor. The floor of this attic was supported by a ledge (Wth c. 0.25m) along all inside walls and by a series of stone corbels in N and S walls; the bases of these corbels are brought down c. 1m in the form of an engaged column with a tapering end. Top of nearly all walls obscured by ivy but no indication of guttering or battlements. Westropp (1906-7, 206-7) recorded the following details about Tomdeely; '1201 Tomdaily, held by the Church of Limerick (B.B.L., p. 14) 1223, and by H. Minetar, who regranted it with Ballymakett and Balidonelin to the Bishop (ib., p. 28). 1253 Agreement of the Bishop with Marg., widow of Tyrry de Kardyff, about Drumdel (ib., p. 12). 1289 Drimdel manor (Pipe R.); it was surveyed, 1336, for Bishop de Rupefort (Rental), and was, with other lands, lost to the see, probably by the Desmonds' encroachments. 1580 T' fitzJ. Caume Fitzgerald held Tomgyly, as part of the lordship of Cleanlish, and the sons of Jas. Fitgerald occupied the C[astle] of Tom Whilley, or Tongwyll, with a fishery on the Shannon (Des. R., 32 ; Inq. Exch., 50, 53; Peyton, p. 234b). 1590 Granted to F. Barckeley (Fi. 5969). 1601 Inhabitants pardoned for supporting the Sugan Earl; Keaghan, O Synene, Dowlagh, and Gankagh named (Fi. 6566). 1615 Drumdely, an auntient manor of the bishops, held by Morris f. Tho., at a rent of 5 marks, or £2 13s. 4d. It had been so long leased and neglected that the rent was only payable at pleasure (Visitatio Regalis, 1615, for Limerick Diocese). 1655 Lord Brohill held Tomdily (C.S., p. 71)'. In level pasture, on W side of Holly Island inlet on S shore of Shannon estuary. Surrounding ruin of Tomdeely hall house (LI010-04803-) and church (LI010-04801-) is roughly rectangular area (c. 150m N-S; c. 200m E-W) defined on N and W sides by low earthen bank (H c. 0.5m; Wth c. 2m) but on N and E sides by more recent stone wall forming field boundary. Bank is straight on S side but changes direction to follow shoreline on W side. Low earthworks around church is presumably remains of precinct wall of graveyard (LI010-04802-); attached to NE side of this are low curvilinear earthen banks (H c. 0.5m; Wth c. 1m) truncated by field boundaries on N and E sides. Elsewhere within larger enclosure are low undulations too indistinct to reveal distinct patterns. Tomdeely was a manor of the Bishop of Limerick from the early 13th century but had became Desmond property by the 14th century (Westropp 1904-5, 393; Westropp 1906-7, 206). On top of a hillock known locally as ‘Knockegan’, in low-lying yet undulating pasture, 300m to W of the River Deel, overlooking the Shannon Estuary to NW. Enclosure (LI010-050001-) lies c. 14m to N. Annotated 'Standing Stones' and depicted on the OS 25-inch map as three stones aligned N-S. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 1996 and described as consisting of four limestone monoliths orientated roughly NE-SW (approx. overall L 7.8m; Wth 3.2m) and densely overgrown. The northern most stone (H 1.2m; L 1.5m; T 0.27m) is upright and is rectangular in elevation. The central stone (L 1.7m; Wth 1m; T 0.25-0.4m) is lying prostrate between the southern and northern stone. The southern stone (H 2m; Wth 1.3m; T 0.38m) is upright and is the most conspicuous in the row. The fourth stone (H 1.37m; Wth 0.92m; T 0.34m) is upright yet tilts heavily to N and is to the immediate W side of the S stone. It seems to have originally stood to S of the stone which is currently southern-most. The NE-SW long-axis of each stone is consistent with the orientation of the overall alignment of stones. A number of smaller stones are scattered around the base of the alignment and some of these are piled in and around the base of the two southern-most stones.
