Tullabracky Church ruins stands in NW quadrant of graveyard (LI031-077002-) with holy well (LI031-079----) and Tullabracky Castle (LI031-078----) 180m to S. Tullabracky Church ruins described in 1840 as following; ‘Of the old Church of this Parish, situated on rising ground in the Townland of Tullabracky Bishopland, the east gable is level with the ground with the exception of a very small portion adjoining the south side wall. The upper portion of the west gable is very much injured. The south wall remains with the exception of two breaches, of which hereafter. There are only two small portions of the north wall remaining, the one adjoining the west gable, the other about (near) the middle of the wall. This Church was forty three and a half feet [13.2m] long by twenty one and a half feet [6.5m] in breadth. On the south side wall, about five feet [1.5m] from the east, there is a breach of about five feet [1.5m] (in width) extending to within three and a half feet [1m] of the ground. The western side of this breach presents the appearance of that of a window, widening on the inside. On the same wall, ten feet [3m] from the west gable, there is a large breach extending to the ground, evidently where the doorway was placed. The south west corner is destroyed. On the upper part of the portion of the west gable which remains there is a breach which may have been a window, now disfigured. The north side wall is featureless. The walls of this Church are about nine feet [2.7m] high and two feet seven inches [0.8m] in thickness. There is a large burial ground still used attached to this Church’ (OSL vol. 2, 33-4) . Westropp (1904-5, 433) recorded the following details on Tullabracky; ‘A parish and prebend in Coshmagh and Small County. Tullachbracc, 1185 (charter of Magio); also 1201. Tholabreg, 1302; Tillabreaka dedicated to St. Molon, May 5th, 1410. Quit claim to Tulachbrec, 1276 (B.B.L., p. 91); Ger. Fanyn to present a fit "person" to church, 1317 (Mem. R.). In 1346 John de Bosworth was parson and prebend. John Eyterward succeeded, 1389 (Pat. R.), Tillaghbrek, 1405 (Cal. Papal L., vi., pp. 35, 84, 460); Tillabreaka, 1410. Tulla braice, in Bishopsland (O'Donovan), D.S. (A), 47. Fabric - It is 43½ feet [13.25m] by 21½ feet [6.5m]. West end and parts of sides stood, 1840. It was nearly levelled in 1901. No surface remains visible of levelled castle situated immediately S of a holy well (LI031-079-----) with Tullabracky Church (LI031-077001-) 180m to N. Castle site described in 1840 as following; 'in the immediate vicinity of the holy well, there was an old Castle called Tullabracky Castle, which was levelled about thirty years ago [c. 1810] by John Malony, the father of the present farmer who occupies the house built on or near its site; part of one of the walls of the Castle is said to enter into the building of a stable belonging to the house. Immediately over the well and running north and south there is portion of a wall, considered by the people as having belonged to Tullabracky Castle! It may possibly be one of the outworks' (OSL vol. 2, 34). Tullabracky Castle described by Westropp (1906-7, 169) as following; '1185 Tullabraci granted to Abbey of Magio (charter). 1302 The corn seized for the King, given to W. le White of Tylaghbrek and others (Justic. R. Cal., p. 466). 1308 Tullachbrek Manor, on the death of Bishop Robert Dundonyll, was taken into the King's hands (Pipe R.). 1655 Tullabreacoke or Tullabracky (C.S., xxiv., p. 14). Fabric. It was nearly levelled in 1810 by J. Molony; parts remain embedded in the stables of the modern house' Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 12 March 2019 - LI031-079: Ritual site - holy well, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI031-079----. Holy well located immediately N of Tullabracky Castle (LI031-078----) with Tullabracky church (LI031-077001-) and graveyard (LI031-077002-) 180m to N. Holy Well described in 1840 as following; ‘at a very short distance southward of the old Church, close to the house of Mr. Maloney, there is a holy well called by the people variously Tobar Mullana, Tobar Mhlunna, and in English Blunny's Well, Mullany's Well and Lunny's Well. The Saint to whom it is dedicated is called Mullana Naomhtha, and in English Blunny; some say that Blunny Maruainigh is the Saint's name. He is believed to have been the founder of the Church (called by some Friary) of Tullabracky. Over the side of this well there is a rocky stone, having on the side facing the well two incisions, traditionally believed to be the impressions of the Saint's knees while at prayer. The people state that there was formerly a "Pattern" here, but the day is not remembered; the well is still however, though seldom, visited for the cure of various diseases. The name of the Patron Saint of this well does not resemble the name of any Saint given in the Irish Calendar; the nearest to it is Mlubhnáin Liaigh, whose festival fell on the 29th March' (OSL vol. 2, 34). Well described by Ó Danachair (1955, 210) as following; "Lunny's Well" local name. Not named on maps. A clear strong spring issuing from a rock said to bear the print of the saint's knees. Now enclosed and pumped way for domestic supply. No devotions now, but the water is said to cure ailments. OSL gives various names Tobar Mullana, Tobar Ailiunna, Blunny's Well, Mullany's Well and Lunny's Well. "He is believed to be the founder of the church of Tullabracky". OSL. "Parish Church of Tillibreaka. It is a prebend, and dedicated to St Molan, 5th day of May". White's List, in Lenihan, Limerick, p. 560.
