The Ordnance Survey recorded in 1840 that there was the 'ruins of an ancient castle adjoining Castle Iever or Tullerboy House, the residence of R. Ievers, Esq.' (OSNB Athlacca Parish, 142). Westropp (1906-7, 167) recorded the following details about Tullerboy Castle which was traditionally believed to have been located on site of Castle Ievers; 'Not marked; but traditionally at the present house. 1319-20 Tylahorwy, Co. Lym., held by Jo, de Kerredyn; the King granted it to W., Bishop of Ossory, and his heirs for ever (Writ, Pipe R., No. 43). 1583 Edm. Leo held Tollereboye and Ross Temple; W. Ryurdane had held the C[astle]. when he was slain in Desmond's rebellion (Inq. Exch., Jas. I., No. 8; Des. R., 39 b; C.S.P.I.). 1655 Walter and Morras Lee held the C[astle]. and bawn (C.S., xxiv., p. 10; D.S.A., 49; B.D., 72)'. Tower-house like castle depicted on the 17th century Down Survey map of Coshma Barony (Hib. Reg.) and on the Down Surevy map of Ballingaddy Parish (NLI MS 718). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Walter Leo & Morcas Leo of Tullorvoy, Irish Papists, were the owners of 'a Castle a Bawne, a tatch wall stone house and another house on it' (Simington 1938, 127). Castle Ievers described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) as a, 'Detached four-bay two-storey over basement country house, built c. 1830, with central breakfront, portico to front (west) elevation, five-bay side elevation and adjoining late medieval castle to rear (east) elevation. Castle to rear having rubble limestone walls with cut limestone crenellations having stringcourse beneath' (www.buildingsofireland.ie; NIAH Reg. No. 21903114). Classified by Donnelly (1999, 31, 38) as a Type 4 tower house which consists of 'tower houses in the county which belong to the last phase in the tradition, with architectural features which include tourelles with shot holes, hood-moulded and mullioned windows, parapet water spouts and cruciform roofs'. On a gently sloping plain commanding extensive views of the surrounding landscape in pasture, 670m NW of Castle Ievers (LI031-088----) and 90m S of the townland boundary with Rosstemple. One of a large group of prehistoric archaeological sites (LI031-217/218/219/220----) excavated on the Bord Gáis Éireann's Pipeline to the West in 2002 (Grogan, et. al. 2007). A ringfort (LI031-086----) is located 280m to SW. No trace of the excavated monument was present on historic OSi maps or aerial photographs prior to the discovery of the site during pipeline construction. The excavation area (12.6m N-S; 20m E-W) was on the NE side of the pipeline corridor and archaeological material extended N outside the limits of the Bord Gáis wayleave (Dennehy 2004). The site uncovered two distinct archaeological structures; a ring-ditch (LI031-216001-) and a metalworking site (LI031-216002-). The ring-ditch enclosure (int. diam. 8m; ext. diam. 9m; D 0.3m) was composed of two curving ditches to the N and S separated by causeways in the NW (Wth 6.25m) and SE (Wth 1.55m) quadrants. The combined ditches defined a slightly raised circular platform. A blue bead was found in the N ditch. Both features were filled with grey/brown sandy clays. No identifiable structures were identified within the ring-ditch and no stake / post-holes were identified in the ditches. A number of isolated stake-holes and large pits were found within and immediately outside the enclosure. Most of these pits contained sterile fills providing little insight into their function. A group of nine large circular stake-holes (average diam.0.22m; D 0.19m) were recorded 3.5m NW of the ring-ditch. They were vertically inserted and were removed before decay. These stakes formed no coherent structure, but additional structures may be present to the N, outside the limit of the wayleave. A curvilinear ditch (L 1.31m) was excavated 0.1m S of the ring-ditch. A blue bead was also retrieved from this feature. The ring-ditch was interpreted as a surviving element from a domestic house. See attached location map and plan of excavated ring-ditch taken from 2002 Excavation Report Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 28 October 2020 - LI031-216002: Metalworking site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI031-216002-. The site uncovered two distinct archaeological structures; a ring-ditch (LI031-216001-), and a metalworking area (LI031-216002-). Evidence for metal smelting/ironworking was recorded at the site. Pits associated with this phase truncated the terminal of the ring-ditch and were positioned centrally within the NW causeway. Large quantities of iron slag, in addition to charcoal and bone, were retrieved from these features. It is assumed that the original function of the ring-ditch (LI031-216002-) was domestic, with the fills of the various features indicating that gradual and natural infilling and decay of the features took place. The truncation of the ring-ditch by the metalworking activity indicates that the separate phases of activity are distinct. No trace of the monument was indicated on OSi historic maps or visible on aerial photographs prior to the discovery of the site during pipeline construction. An area (29sq.m) was excavated under licence No. 02E0500 uncovering a disturbed fulacht fia. Two cut pit features were identified. Pit 2 was triangular (0.6m NE-SW; 1.51m NW-SE; D. 0.14m) with a concave centre and shallower, shelved edges. The fill in the pit was composed of blue/grey sandy clay with moderate amounts of burnt sandstone and charcoal. Pit 6 was oval (1.32m N-S; 0.9m E-W; D. 0.2m) with steep sides and an uneven base. The fill consisted of dark grey sandy clay including a significant quantity of burnt sandstone and charcoal. A thin disturbed deposit of mid-grey sandy clay with a high burnt sandstone and charcoal component (L. 1.25-1.1m; D. 0.08m) was recorded within a natural depression. Two stone tools, a flint crescentic scraper and chert scraper were found on the surface of the site in disturbed contexts. The site is typical of many excavated during the pipeline project, pits and deposits containing charcoal and heated fire-cracked stone. The surface finds and site typology is consistent with a Bronze Age date for the site. No trace of the monument was indicated on OSi historic maps or visible on aerial photographs prior to the discovery of the site during pipeline construction. A single isolated sub-circular pit (ext. dims. 0.71m x 0.64m, D. 0.13m) with a bowl-shaped profile was excavated under licence No. 02E0501 at the site. The fill within the pit consisted of a dark grey, silty clay with moderate fire-shattered stone and charcoal. No artefacts were recovered. The archaeological feature is typical of many excavated during the pipeline project, pits and deposits containing charcoal and heated fire-shattered stone. Such deposits are likely to have been derived from a fulacht fia with a Bronze Age date suggested (Taylor 2004, 348). No trace of the monument was present on historic maps or aerial photographs prior to the discovery of the site during pipeline construction. The site (ext. dims. 11.6m N-S; 7.8m E-W) was composed of seven large pits and numerous smaller pits. Most were shallow, possible natural depressions within the sub-soil containing charcoal mixed with clay. Some of the site was covered by a thin spread of burnt stone and charcoal. A sub-oval pit (ext. dims. 1.8m N-S; 1.3m E-W) contained a series of concentric stake-holes along the base and occasionally in the centre. This was seen as a possible roasting pit, with stakes supporting a rack, alternatively the stakes may have retained a wooden trough. This site was interpreted as remnant of a fulacht fia (Halpin 2004, 348). No trace of the monument was present on historic maps or aerial photographs prior to the discovery of the site during pipeline construction. A single, isolated oval post-hole or small pit was excavated (ext. dims. 0.34m; 0.26m; D. 0.18m) with steep sides and a concave base. The fill in the feature consisted of a dark brown, silty clay with occasional stones and a moderate amount of charcoal. There was evidence of in situ burning, with the natural geological deposits in the sides of the feature being oxidised. Possible packing stones were also observed in the edges of the fill. No artefacts were recovered, and the feature remains undated. Interpretation is problematic. The form of the cut and the presence of packing stones appeared to indicate a post-hole; however, no other features were observed in the vicinity to form a structure (such as a house of or a fence etc.). The fill was not typical of other prehistoric features in the area; the absence of associated medieval or post-medieval finds suggests an early date (Taylor 2004, 348). In flat wet pasture abutting the townland boundary with Drombeg on its NE side. A ringfort (LI031-089----) is located 200m to NE and Castle Ievers (LI031-088----) is 550m to SSW. Not depicted on historic OSi maps but is visible on both the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on the OSi Digital Globe orthophoto taken 2011-2013. Identified by ASI aerial photographic survey in 2005 (ASIAP (18/09/2020)) as a large sub-rectangular shaped enclosure (ext. dims. c. 120m ENE-WSW; 60m NNW-SSE). A relic field boundary orientated NNW-SSE depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map bisects the W quadrant of the large enclosure. The enclosure is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 05/04/2006; 16/03/2016; 25/03/2017 and 14/02/2020. These images reveal a second ditched rectangular-shaped earthwork (ext. dims. 31m NNW-SSE; 39m ENE-WSW) or annexe on the NNE side of the monument located between the larger rectangular enclosure and the townland boundary, both enclosures are likely to form part of the same monument.
