Situated on the W-facing slope of a hill in gently rolling former pasture, immediately E of a disused quarry. Structure shown on 1840 OS map and named 'Turret' is located in an area of dense scrub vegetation and it was not possible to find any standing remains of the structure. It was probably an eyecatcher/folly as it is located close in a prominent position close to the entrance into the demesne of Tower Hill country house which was built in 1800 (see Spellissy 1989, 135). Medieval parish church ruins depicted on the Down Survey map of Tuogh parish (NLI, MS 718). On this map the church is shown standing to the NE of Toigh Castle (LI015-079----) Church ruins described in 1840 as following; 'The east gable and twenty six feet [7.9m] in length of the south wall joined to it are the only remains of the old Church of this Parish. The foundation of the rest of the building is not traceable. Its breadth is eighteen feet [5.5m]; the side wall is about twelve feet [3.65m] high. On the gable is a window which on the inside is stopped up with a flag stone placed over a grave. On the outside it, was divided into two compartments, each having a curvilineally pointed top. The mullion that divided it has been removed. The whole window measures on this side three feet eight inches [1.1m] in height by one foot three and a half inches [0.4m] in breadth, each compartment measuring six inches [0.15m] in breadth. It is constructed of chiselled lime stone. There is a small building attached to the south side of this ruin, which is on a line with the east gable and runs southwards. It is closed up as a burial place and measures on the outside thirty feet [9.1m] by seventeen feet eight inches [5.4m]. The entrance, which is on the south wall, is modern brickwork and has an iron gate placed in it. A window faces the east on this structure, of the same form with the one just described and constructed of the same kind of stone similarly dressed and in the same condition with it. The side walls are about ten feet [3m] high and three feet [0.9m] thick. The materials are large and small field limestones and cement of lime and sand mortar. This appears to be coeval with the Church whose ruins have been just now described, the brickwork in it above mentioned, being alone excepted. Here is a large grave yard much in use which is enclosed by a wall of mason work' (OSL). Situated on elevated ground immediately S of a public road, with good views in all directions. The graveyard is a sub-oval area (diam. c. 50m) accessed directly from the public road. It is enclosed by a mortared rough-hewn stone wall (H c. 0.7m), ivy covered and dilapidated in places and patched with cement blocks. At the centre are the ivy-clad remains of Tuogh church (LI015-031001-). The graveyard is still in use and maintained. The earliest headstones noted date to the late 18th century. A group of 19th century vaulted tombs are located in NE and SE quadrant of the graveyard. Situated c. 15m E of a field boundary in low-lying, gently undulating pasture. Tuogh church (LI015-031001-) and graveyard (LI015-031002-) 230m to E. Flat recumbent slab of conglomerate rock (2.3m WNW; 0.9m ENE) partially covered with grass. Six almost circular depressions (diam. c. 0.3-0.36m) are visible on the surface. Surrounded by a low mound of grassed-over stones which appears to be of recent construction. it is possible that this low mound is a dump of rubble stone covering a well that is depicted on the OS 25-inch map. Only two depressions are now visible the rest are covered by top sod. A well is marked at this location on the OS 25-inch map with a second well marked 95m to S. According to local tradition one of these well was the original Toberbreedia or St. Bridget's Well which moved to its current location (LI015-029----) beside Towerhill House located 675m to the S. In 1907 a local tradition about Toberbreedia and its original location beside a bullaun stone (LI015-041----) was recorded as following; 'Close to Tower-Hill House there is a holy well [LI015-029----], called Tubberbreedia (St. Bridget's well), which is said to have the virtue of healing vomiting, if the water be taken before daylight, fasting, in the name of the saint. It is said to have removed, owing to desecration; and at its original site in the field before the gate there is to be found under a large ash-tree a flat, rough stone [LI015-041----], having eight cup-markings in it. These are called the marks of the saint's knees; and it is said there were originally nine, one of which may easily be concealed by the growth of the tree. It is said that rounds are made here three times in the month of November. Tradition says that in this field a village formerly stood' (Seymour 1907, 371) Compiled by: Denis Power Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 27 November 2018 - LI015-074: Bullaun stone, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLI015-074----. Situated on a SE-facing slope in gently rolling pasture. Towerhill House stands on site of Tuogh Castle, 590m SSW of Tough Church (LI015-031001-). Seymour (1907, 371) recorded the following details about Tuogh Castle; 'The Down Survey notes that "there is at Tuogh Killuragh a Castle in repaire, and a Stonehouse [LI015-048----] in repaire, and Six Cabbins" (this last is evidently the village alluded to above); while the Civil Survey speaks of "Tuogh and Pallisbeg, two ploughlands with a castle in repaire, a Bawen, a stone-house [LI015-048----], an Orchard, two mills seate, and the demolished Castle of Pallisbeg [LI015-047----]." The Mac Brien family owned these castles and lands'. Westropp (1906-7, 100-1) recorded the following details about Tough [Teauragh/Tower Hill] Castle; 'Not marked. It appears in many curious forms in Tudor documents. Zoghesgren, Xoghtesgrene, Johenishesgrene, attempts to transliterate "Tuath Aesgreine." 1544 The Manor C[astle]. or fort of Toghexgrene was recovered from a gang of robbers, called the "Oolde children," in Ogonagh, and granted to Thady Mac Brian and his heirs of Grenegounaghe (Fi., 153, Pat. Tough and Pallisbeg C[astle] in repair, bawen, orchards, and two mill seats on the river Glydagh held by Teige O'Brien (C.S., xxs.; p. 8, B.D., p. 115). 1666 Roger, Earl of Orrery, confirmed in Manor of Twagh, with Tometarriff and Tearaffe or Teauragh (Act Sett.). It was in later days the residence of the Lloyd family'. The 1654-56 Civil Survey recorded that Tadhg O'Brien was the owner of the lands of 'Towgh an Pallicebeg' on which there stood a 'Castle [Tuogh Castle] in repaire a Bawen a stone house [LI015-048----] an Orchard two Millseates and the Demolished Castle of Pallicebeg [LI015-047----]' (Simington 1938, 8). The terrier of the Down Survey map of Tuogh Parish stated that 'There is at Twogh Killuragh a Castle in repaire and a stone house [LI015-048----] in repaire and six Cabbins' (NLI, MS 718).
