Originally recorded as a number of patches of tightly packed brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.03m) exposed over quite a large area of one field (exposed area 11m N-S; 6m E-W). The remains were on the field surface and were being milled but may have survived intact under the central dome of the field (Dunne 1999, 41, 99DD0005A-D). During excavation a cutting (1m x 1m) was opened, which uncovered a possible hurdle, the elements of which ranged in diameter from 0.007 to 0.032m and were orientated NW-SE. The rest of the remains were very badly degraded (Dunne 2002c, 204). Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - LF018-107: Road - class 3 togher, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF018-107----. Originally recorded as a band of small and large brushwood, along with twigs, that was exposed on the field surface and was being milled (Dunne 1999, 43, 99DD0009A). All of the pieces of brushwood were aligned WNW-ESE except one transverse example, which seemed to overlie the longitudinal elements. It was best preserved at WNW, where approximately 30 tightly packed pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.05m) were present. Excavation revealed the remains (exposed L 5.6m; Wth 2.9m) as being composed of two layers. The upper layer (Wth 0.5-0.73m) consisted of a band of longitudinal small brushwood, which was supported by transverse brushwood (L 2.9m). The lower layer (Wth 1.08m) consisted of longitudinal brushwood and twigs (Dunne 2002d, 204). Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. This togher (L 420m; Wth 2.2m), generally orientated E-W, was visible across 28 fields. The remains were largely on the field surface and had been milled. They were mostly evident as a band of wood chips and degraded timbers with some displaced timbers in the drains. At one point they were visible in the drain face at a depth of 0.28m (Dunne 1999, 40, 99DD0001A-Y). The togher may still be intact under the milled surface in other areas but this was not clear. It was constructed of quite thin oak planks and split timbers (L 1.9m max.; Wth 0.10-0.30m; T 0.02-0.10m), roundwood (diam. 0.07-0.08m), brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.055m) and twigs. Most of the elements were aligned longitudinally but many split timbers, roundwood and brushwood transverses were also in evidence. Longitudinal planks were laid side-by-side and covered by a dense brushwood layer. Occasional pegs, including a squared example, were present. Excavation revealed the remains to be composed of oak-split planks laid longitudinally and supported by transverse split planks and roundwood held in place by pegs (Dunne 2002a, 203). Four roundwoods (diam. 0.075-0.08m; L 0.76m max.), orientated WNW-ESE, were located on the field surface and were being milled (exposed area 1.5m x 1.3m). A single degraded wedge-point end was noted. A small concentration of twigs (0.2m x 0.2m), with varying orientations occurred S of the roundwood with some brushwood on the opposite side. The evidence suggested that this was likely to be the remains of a platform. This togher (L 173m; Wth 1.2m), orientated ENE-WSW, extended across eleven fields (Dunne 1999, 41, 99DD0003A-J). The remains were on the field surface and were being milled. They were largely visible as a band of degraded brushwood and wood chips, however, there was evidence to show that the togher survived intact in places beneath ground level, particularly under the central dome of the fields. Two parallel lines of brushwood (diam. 0.05cm) formed the edges with a third, similar, line extending along the centre. The body of the togher consisted of tightly packed longitudinal small brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.02m and 0.04m max.), along with some twigs. The longitudinal elements rested on a substructure of transverse large brushwood. Excavation revealed the togher to be composed of longitudinal small brushwood and twigs on the upper surface. This layer was supported by larger brushwood also laid longitudinally or at a slight angle to the upper surface. This lower surface was further supported by longitudinal small brushwood and twigs (Dunne 2002b, 203-4). A small area of exposed brushwood (1.5m NW-SE; 0.30m NE-SW) was located on the field surface and was being milled. Two long but degraded pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.01m and 0.02m) extended NW-SE along the length of the exposure. A short brushwood (diam. 0.015m) extended N-S across both of these. Other short fragments of brushwood present were orientated both NW-SE and NE-SW. The larger longitudinal brushwood had a possible coppiced heel at its NW end. The evidence suggested that this was likely to be the remains of a platform. Three pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.04m) extended diagonally into the bog at varying angles (exposed area 0.5 x 0.5m). Two were orientated NE-SW, with the third aligned at right angles. No toolmarks were visible though the pieces of brushwood were likely to have worked ends that were driven into the bog. The evidence suggested that this may well have been the last remnants of a possible platform. A band of parallel, longitudinal brushwood (overall exposed L 3m; Wth 0.7m) was exposed on the field surface and was being milled. The principle exposed area measured 1.5m ENE-WSW by 0.7m NNW-SSE but there were occasional pieces of brushwood visible for a further 1.5m. A togher (exposed L 23m; Wth 1.1-1.25m), aligned WNW-ESE, was located on the field surface and was being milled (Dunne 1999, 45, 99DD0015A-C; 2002f, 205). Two adjoining fields were at a higher level than the fields on either side, which accounted for the survival of the togher at this location. The remains, noted at three points (15A-C) across two fields, comprised densely packed brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.025m) and twigs; some brushwood and twig pegs were also uncovered. Most elements were longitudinal with occasional transverses. A hurdle panel was also uncovered, lying over one section of the togher. A large transverse roundwood (L 3.9m; diam. 0.075m) (at 15B), orientated N-S, had a degraded chisel point at its S end. This end appears to have been split in antiquity before being placed in position. Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. This togher (exposed L 11.5m; Wth 1.1m) was composed of closely set longitudinal small and large brushwood and twigs, and was orientated NW-SE (Dunne 2002g, 205). There were also occasional small brushwood transverses. Adjacent fields had been milled to a lower level. Originally recorded as 19A and 19B (Dunne 1999, 46, 99DD0019A-B). 19A: was located to the W of a drain, on the field surface, and was being milled. It consisted of tightly packed brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.03m) at least two layers thick; it was orientated E-W but turned to NNW-SSE at W. Some of the brushwood pieces were larger and may have been part of a substructure. 19B: 10.5m to the W consisted of three to four pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.04m; L 0.5m max.; Wth of exposure 0.5m) oriented NW-SE. This togher (exposed L 10m, Wth 1.1m, T 0.32m) was composed of mainly small and occasional large brushwood and twigs, and was orientated WSW-ENE (Dunne 2002e, 204-5). A number of pegs were recorded along the centre. Originally recorded as 12A and 12B (Dunne 1999, 44, 99DD0012A-B). 12A was located on the field surface and was being milled (exposed L 0.7m, Wth 1.7m). Two parallel, longitudinal, large pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.045-0.05m) formed the sides and centre. The body of the togher comprised more than 50 tightly packed, small pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.02m and 0.03m max.) along with some twigs, all aligned longitudinally. The pieces of brushwood had fractures in such a way as to suggest the presence of transverse elements underneath. There was no visible evidence of woodworking. 12B, 8m E on the same field surface, consisted of a small exposure of similar form, suggesting a continuation of the togher.
