In low-lying pasture. A raised subcircular area (c. 40m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 2.8m; H 0.3m) at S and elsewhere defined by a scarp (H 0.7m). Traces of an external fosse (Wth 1.2m; D 0.2-0.4m) are evident. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded that the original entrance was at SE. At S a low scarp (H 0.1m) extends in an arc to the S and then to the E where it meets a N-S running field boundary, which skirts the E portion of the monument. The area (c. 17.5m N-S; c. 17m E-W) thus enclosed is irregular in plan; it may be an annexe. Compiled by: Patrick F. A togher (L 750m; Wth 2.5m; D 0.23m), noted in 1988, orientated ENE-WSW, consisted of a superstructure of transverse roundwood and split stems, which had been laid on a substructure of longitudinal runners and transverse roundwood. There was evidence that a metal tool had been used. Dendrochronological dating revealed a date range of 2259±9 BC (Q7918). When inspected in 1999 the togher extended over the milled surface of twelve fields for an overall distance of 225m. It comprised longitudinal parallel roundwood (diam. 0.06-0.10m), brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.06m) and twigs. A small number of transverse pieces of brushwood of similar diameter were also visible and one worked chisel-point end was noted (Dunne 1999, 99LBW0008A-I). A togher (L 5.9m min.; Wth 3m; D 0.2m), noted in 1989, consisting of longitudinal brushwood and roundwood overlying a small deposit of transverse brushwood. The orientation was NE-SW. Radiocarbon dated to 3654-3371 BC (4760±60 BP, GrN-16830). A togher (L 435m; Wth 2.1m; D 0.24m), noted in 1989, consisted of a superstructure of longitudinal roundwood and brushwood, supported by a substructure of transverse roundwood and longitudinal brushwood and roundwood. The orientation was NE-SW. Some pegs were apparent and a chert flake was found on the surface. Radiocarbon dating revealed a date range of 3362-3369 BC (4680±125 BP, GrN-16831). When inspected in 1999 a transverse superstructure (L 480m; Wth 2.5m) extended across 31 fields. The upper surface was generally constructed of closely laid transverse planks (L 1.2-2.4m; Wth 0.13-0.3m; T 0.06-0.1m) and roundwood (diam. 0.06-0.14m) but also included transverse brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.05m). These elements were orientated NW-SE to NNW-SSE and rested on a substructure of longitudinal roundwood runners (diam. 0.06-0.18m) that extended NE-SW to ENE-WSW. Almost the entire remains were located on the field surface and most of the structure was badly degraded due to milling. It was, however, evident in section in the drain face at a number of locations. In places the surface of the transverse planks was milled, while the original woodworking on the ends was still largely intact. Some of the brushwood had worked chisel-point ends. A flat stone (0.19 x 0.15 x 0.04m) was incorporated into the surface of the track at one point. Quantities of hazelnut shells were present in places between the elements. A togher (L 4.15m min.; Wth 0.8m; D 0.06m), noted in 1989, consisted of longitudinal brushwood secured with occasional diagonals. The orientation was ENE-WSW. Radiocarbon dated to 3329-2910 BC (4410±45 BP, GrN-18376). When inspected in 1999 the togher (L 180m; Wth 0.7-1.7m) extended across the surface of nine fields. Its orientation ranged from ENE-WSW at 16A to NE-SW at 16E, however, at 16D the brushwood ran E-W. The remains consisted of tightly packed, longitudinal, parallel brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.03m), fine twigs and roundwood, no more than one to two layers in thickness. Some pegs (diam. 0.03-0.035m) were evident. The original form of the feature was visible at 18E. Two parallel, longitudinal roundwoods (1.2m apart; diam. 0.08m) formed the edges of the track. A transverse piece of brushwood (diam. 0.03m) was visible here (Dunne 1999, 7, 99LBW0016A-E). A band (exposed Wth 3.1m; T 0.12m) of 200 to 300 densely packed twigs was visible in the E face of a drain. The band also included ten to twelve irregularly spaced pieces of brushwood (diam. 0.04-0.05m). The remains were also visible in the W section face, though the elements there were less compacted. No woodworking was visible. The evidence suggested that this was likely to be the remains of a platform. A togher (L 159m) orientated ENE-WSW. Excavation revealed an upper walking surface (Wth 0.4-0.7m), which consisted of a core of closely spaced roundwood and brushwood longitudinals, with longitudinal outliers placed parallel to these central elements (Dunne 2002k, 206). This superstructure rested on transverse, diagonal and longitudinal roundwood and brushwood. The largest transverse was a curving oak roundwood (L 3.5m). The wood was very soft and decayed and no well-preserved worked ends were recovered. A small number of timbers possessed worked ends that were in a degraded and decayed condition. The largest of the upper longitudinals was a half-split, roundwood trunk that was hollowed through decay and which may have been in that rotted condition when it was originally put in place. (Dunne 1999, 9, 99LBW0021A) Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. A compact horizontal band (Wth 0.8m; T 0.08m) of uniform small brushwood (diam. 0.015-0.045m) was evident in both section faces; possibly a hurdle. The remains extended roughly at right angles to the line of the drain. Approximately twenty pieces were visible and there was no visible evidence of woodworking. The evidence suggested that was likely to have been the remains of a platform. Up to five parallel roundwoods (exposed L 1.5m; Wth 0.7m) located on the field surface were badly degraded due to milling. There was no visible evidence of woodworking. The remains were also visible in the E face of a nearby drain. (Dunne 1999, 10, 99LBW0024A) Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. Originally recorded as a substantial structure (exposed L 27.5m; Wth 1.2m) located immediately to the WSW of a drain shoulder. The remains were being milled close to the drain but extended under the milled surface, which rose towards the centre of the field. The surface consisted of a superstructure of longitudinal, densely packed, small and large brushwood. This was underlain by a substructure of four longitudinal planks (Wth 0.12-0.3m), two if which were closely set in the middle, while the other two formed both edges. The gap between the S and central planks was 0.5cm, while the corresponding gap on the N side was 0.35m. The gaps were filled with brushwood. Some of the brushwood extended into the bog surface at an angle of c. 45º (Dunne 1999, 10, 99LBW0026A). Excavation revealed that there may be two toghers here. Longitudinal small brushwood with three larger pieces of brushwood, orientated NE-SW forming boundaries and an internal spine of the togher, were uncovered (Dunne 2002l, 206). This may be part of another togher (LF022-085----) located 50m away. Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. A small patch of a togher (exposed Wth 0.75m) was located on the field surface immediately to the E of a drain. It may have been truncated at W by the drain and it was not evident in the opposite section face or field surface. It was composed of converging brushwood and roundwood, which generally extended NW-SE to NNW-SSE. Two roundwoods (diam. 0.06m and 0.07m) extended across the brushwood (av. diam. 0.02m) holding the general orientation. There were also two to three roundwoods extending in an E-W direction. A band (exposed Wth 2.58m) of thin brushwood (av. diam. 0.03m) was exposed in an E drain face. It was not visible in the opposite drain face and there was no sign of woodworking. The orientation of the togher was difficult to determine as the brushwood formed a jumbled arrangement, however, the two principle directions noted were N-S and E-W. Originally recorded as a loose band (exposed L 35.5m; Wth 2.5m; T 0.3m) of small and large brushwood, along with at least two roundwoods, extending roughly at right angles into both the E and W drain faces (Dunne 1999, 13, 99LBW0033A). It was orientated ENE-WSW. Two cuttings were excavated along its length revealing that the togher was constructed with longitudinal roundwood, brushwood and twigs (Wth 0.95-2.5m; T 0.3m); the roundwoods were sometimes arranged in pairs. A large number of pegs and posts were used and these displayed a variety of worked ends. Many of the tips were blunted and buckled from impinging on lower elements of the structure. Originally recorded as a compact band (exposed L 3.7m; Wth 2.3m) of small and large brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.15m) located on the field surface and aligned NNW-SSE (Dunne 1999, 8, 99LBW0019A). Excavation revealed that the elements appeared to have been transverses for a roundwood and brushwood togher that originally ran ENE-WSW. A number of posts and pegs held the structure in place (Dunne 2002j, 206). Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. Originally recorded as being exposed on the field surface (exposed L 5.7m; Wth 0.8m) and being milled immediately W of a drain (Dunne 1999, 13, 99LBW0034A). However, it appeared to extend under the bog surface that rose away from the drain towards the centre of the field. Excavation revealed longitudinal twigs and small brushwood, arranged in a band (Wth 0.5-0.8m) orientated NE-SW (Dunne 2002o, 207). Originally recorded as a small patch of a togher (L 10m min.) exposed on the field surface and visible in a drain section face (Dunne 1999, 7, 99LBW0014A). Excavation revealed an upper walking surface (original Wth 1.6-1.75m) of loosely laid, longitudinal small brushwood, with roundwood placed along the edges extending E-W. A substructure consisted of transverse, diagonal and longitudinal roundwood and brushwood, which in turn rested on diagonal and longitudinal small brushwood. Pegs were used to contain the edges of the togher and the substructure. There was no evidence of woodworking. The remains were quite degraded and milled. A tightly packed band (exposed Wth 1.6m; T 0.18m) comprising seven roundwoods, and also incorporating c. 30 small and large pieces of brushwood, was exposed in a drain face. It extended into the section and was not evident in the opposing drain face. There was no visible evidence of woodworking. A compact band (exposed Wth 2.2m; T 0.2m) of brushwood was visible in opposing drain faces. The majority of the elements were small (diam. c. 0.02m), with five or six larger pieces (diam. 0.04 to 0.05m) at the N end of the section. Most of the brushwood extended into the drain face while one or two pieces ran transversely underneath them at the S end. There was no visible evidence of woodworking. The evidence suggested that this was likely to be the remains of a platform. Originally recorded as consisting of eight to ten roundwoods lying on top of smaller brushwood in a WSW drain face (Dunne 1999, 4, 99LBW0005A). Excavation revealed the togher (L 1.7m min.; exposed Wth 1.2m; T 0.45m) to be orientated NNE-SSE and constructed of longitudinal roundwood and brushwood (diam. 0.12m). These were probably originally underlain by transverse elements (Dunne 2002h, 205). Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data supplied by Jane Whitaker, Archaeological Development Services. A substantial togher (exposed Wth 5.6m; T 0.4m min.) consisting of at least two split timbers, more than 30 roundwoods and over 100 pieces of brushwood was visible in both the E and W faces of a drain. It appeared to be orientated E-W, extending roughly at right angles to the line of the drain. A superstructure consisted of the two split timbers and numerous roundwoods (diam. 0.1-0.15m). The underlying substructure was composed of small brushwood (diam. c. 0.03m).
