Outside zoned towns and villages, the county development plan's rural policies apply to each application. ## Planning applications whose site touches the townland (National Planning Applications, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage) No planning application touches the townland of Glen in the national file, which goes back to 2010. ## Designated sites (National Parks and Wildlife Service) No designated site (Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area, Natural Heritage Area or proposed one) touches the townland of Glen. ## Recorded monuments (Sites and Monuments Record, National Monuments Service) - LF020-023: Burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF020-023----. On a S-facing slope. Named 'Caldragh Church Yard' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and 'Site of' on the 1914 ed. This townland was known as: 'Gleann na n-Easbog, Vallis Episcoporum, Valley of the Bishops’ and was so named because ‘it contains an old graveyard, in which, according to tradition, four bishops are buried' (OSNB, Ardagh parish, 1836-7, book 4, 51). The OS Letters (1837) refer to it as a 'churchyard’ (OSL, 39). The English form of the name 'Caldragh' derives from the Irish Cealltrach meaning ‘old churchyard’: the element ceall meaning ‘church’, but the name was generally used to refer to a place of burial. The name has also come to be associated with locations used as the burial grounds of unbaptised children. However, there is no evidence to suggest that a children's burial ground existed here. The site is occupied by a modern house. A quantity of bone was discovered during the excavation of the house foundations (local information). Compiled by: Patrick F. On a gentle SE-facing slope in pasture. A circular, steep-sided mound of earth and stone (H c. 4-5m; diam. at base 28m; diam. at summit c. 11m). The summit is enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 4m; H 0.5m) from ESE-S-NW, while there is a depression (2.5m; D 0.3m) of unknown significance at NW. There is no evidence of an encircling fosse or of a bailey. Compiled by: Patrick F. In low-lying pasture. A raised circular area (diam. c. 45m) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.8-4m; H 0.4-0.5m) with an external fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.4m), which has been infilled at W and NW. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a wide low bank of earth and stone at the outer lip of the fosse from W-N-ENE; it has since been levelled. Elsewhere its circuit is preserved in modern, curving, field boundaries. There are entrances at WNW (Wth 2m) and at NW (Wth 1m). Compiled by: Patrick F.
