On a terrace on a W-facing slope in pasture, c. 1km to the SW of the modern town of Granard. Marked on the OS 6-inch maps as 'Old Town of Granard (Site of)' because in 1837 O’Donovan recorded that the 'town of Granard was removed from its original site shortly after the Battle of Aughrim [1691]. It stood originally near the present R.C. Chapel, in the townland of Granardkille, where its ruins are yet traceable' (OSL, 23 4). According to local tradition, it was believed to be the site of the historically attested Anglo-Norman borough of Granard (see LF010-055----). There is little doubt but that these earthworks are the remains of a settlement mentioned in 1611 in a lease from the King to Richard Hardinge, which listed 'One ruinous church [LF010-078002-], 3 messuages [dwellings], 40a arable and 30a pasture, parcel of the lands of the hospital of St Patrick [LF010-078003-], called Granard Kille in O'Ferrall's country; rent 1[pound] 10s [shillings] 0d [pence]' (Cal. pat. Rolls Ire., Jas I, 213). The settlement extends over c. 2.5 hectares and comprises up to 25 houses and hut sites as well as a series of rectangular, wedge and D-shaped enclosures of various sizes, and some grassed-over streets (O’Conor 2006, 319). Archaeological research excavations were carried out over three seasons between 2002 and 2004 in order to establish, primarily, the date of the earthworks (ibid.). One house site and two enclosures were partially excavated, yielding evidence dating to the 16th and early 17th centuries (O'Conor and Dillon 2002, 137-8, O’Connor 2006, 319; 2007, 251). The house was of sod construction and crucks may have supported its roof. The various enclosures around the site were the remains of stock enclosures and vegetable gardens or small arable fields (O’Conor 2006, 319). Evidence indicating early medieval occupation, in the form of a rubbish pit (LF010-078007-) and a souterrain (LF010-078005-), was also uncovered as well as a possible Bronze Age pit burial (LF010-078006-) (ibid.). However, no finds of Anglo-Norman date were found – suggesting that the borough was located elsewhere – possibly in Moatfield, to the W of the motte and bailey (LF010-080001-) (ibid.; O’Conor and De Meulemeester 2007, 91). Immediately to the S of the road, overlooking the deserted settlement (LF010-078001-) to the NE. The church of 'Granardkilly' is depicted on an early 17th-century map of Granard barony (BL, Cotton MS Augustus I.i.47). A lease dated 1611 lists 'one ruinous church’ and ‘the hospital of St Patrick, called Granard-Kille in O'Ferrall's country’ (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 213). This church may be the medieval parish church of Granard (Bradley et al. 1985, 19-20) (but see also LF010-055002-). Its precise location and that of the hospital (LF010-078003-) have not been identified. However, the church may have been located close to or within the graveyard (LF010-078004-) where a fragment of a round-headed window that may be from it, and which is possibly of late-12th/early 13th-century date, is incorporated into the graveyard wall, adjacent to the entrance. Other window fragments incorporated in the wall may be from the ‘R. C. Chapel’ shown on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This church has been levelled and a small oratory, containing the font from it, now stands on its site. (Masterson 1935, 91) Compiled by: Patrick F. Immediately to the S of a road, possibly associated with a medieval parish church (LF010-078002-). This irregularly shaped, elongated graveyard (c. 230m NE-SW; c. 40-70m NW-SE) is defined by a stone wall along the roadside and elsewhere by a combination of hedging, concrete walls and mesh-wire fencing. Access is via gates on the roadside. A plaque indicates that it was consecrated by the Rev. Doctor McGauran, Bishop of Ardagh on the 29th September 1826. Incorporated into the wall, adjacent to the entrance, are fragments of round-headed windows. One is possibly from the medieval church and the others may be from the ‘R. C. Chapel’, shown on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map, that formerly stood in the SW end of the graveyard. Archaeological excavations (02E0795) in 2003 revealed the remains of what was then interpreted as a corn-drying kiln. Further investigations in 2004 revealed that it was the drystone-walled passageway of a souterrain which had been heavily burnt at its entranceway. The souterrain had been completely filled in at some stage after it fell into disuse (O'Conor 2007, 251). Compiled by: Patrick F. At At the E end of a N-S ridge in undulating countryside with panoramic views in all directions. A circular dome-like mound (diam. c. 60m), that rises above a scarp (H 0.5-1.4m) from SSE-S-W, is encircled by a berm (Wth 6-7.5m; H 1.34-1.75m). The latter is enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 6.45m; H 0.45m) from NNE-E-SSW and a low scarp (H 1.35-1.75m) from SSW-N-NNE. An intervening fosse (Wth 6.5-8.3m; D 0.85m) is visible from E-ESE, at SSE and from WNW-N and an outer bank is identifiable only at E. The original entrance appears to have been at NW where a causeway or slight ramp (Wth c. 3m) crosses the fosse. The classification of this monument is problematic. Bradley et al. (1985, 18) regarded it as a ringfort and suggested that the castle (LF010-08004-) built by Uilliam O Ferghaill (O'Farrell) in 1405 may have been located here rather than on the motte and bailey (LF010-080001-), c. 770m to the NE, in Granard. However, it appears to be some form of fortification, possibly an earth and timber castle that was refortified in the 15th century or it could be an interesting example of a 15th-century Gaelic earth and timber castle.
