In pasture at the NW end of a ridge running NW-SE, overlooking flat poorly drained land to the N. A circular, steep-sided, flat-topped motte is defined by a mound of earth and stone (H c. 3-4.5m; diam. at base c. 15m). An irregular depression (diam. 2m; D 0.4m) on its summit (diam. c. 7m) is probably associated with the use of the monument by the OS as a spot height. The E face of the motte has partially collapsed. Its base is enclosed by a wide deep fosse (Wth 4.4m; D 1m) from SW-W-N and a shallow depression or dip, which separates it from the bailey, from N-E-SSW. The raised crescent-shaped bailey to the SE of the motte is defined by a scarp (ext. H 1.5-2.5m), a wide external fosse (Wth 4.5m; ext. D 1m) and a tree-lined earth and stone outer bank. Traces of wall-footings are evident along the SE edge of the scarp. The outer bank has been levelled from SE-S. Two livestock gaps are visible: one (Wth 1.7m) at S and one (Wth 2.5m) at WSW, the former is of recent appearance. An unusual feature is that the outer bank widens out into a flat-topped berm (Wth 5-9m; ext. H 1.3m) from WSW-N-E. Well preserved internal wall-footings along the berm, from SW-W-N, indicate it was also stone-faced. The berm only runs around the vulnerable side of the motte, which is not protected by the bailey. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 15 October 2013 - LF020-035: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF020-035----. On top of a ridge running NNW-SSE with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular farmstead associated with a possible house and outbuilding. The buildings and the enclosing element of the farmstead have been levelled but the outline of the latter is visible in places as a low poorly preserved earthen bank (H c. 0.1m). A mature tree is growing at the S corner. The buildings and farmstead were probably of 18th century date. A haggard to the NE was associated (pers. comm. local landowner). A motte and bailey (LF020-009001-) lie c. 60m to the NNW. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 11 October 2013 - LF020-045: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF020-045----. At the base of an E-facing slope in pasture with good views to the N, E and S. This possible enclosure was discovered in 2013 during the course of a review of LIDAR data where it is visible as a low, subcircular raised area (diam. c. 60m) (pers. comm. Dr Steve Davis, UCD). The monument has been levelled but is barely visible as a low circular-shaped platform (diam. c. 55m N-S; c. 45m E-W), which is defined by a scarp (H c. 0.2m) with slight suggestions of a shallow external fosse (Wth c. 4m; D c. 0.1m). No other features are visible. It is visible as a cropmark on Bing Maps aerial photograph taken between 06-07 November 2011. The attached LIDAR image is uploaded courtesy of Dr Steve Davis.
