- LF013-015: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF013-015----. On a gentle NNE-facing slope in pasture. A raised oval area (54.4m N-S; 42.1m E-W) enclosed by a much-denuded, wide, low bank of earth and stone (Wth 7.5m; H 0.4m) with a wide, shallow, external fosse (Wth 5.2m; D 0.3m). The latter has been infilled from SSW-N-NNE but its outline is still identifiable. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded vague traces of a possible outer bank at SW, which are no longer identifiable. A wide break (Wth 4.7m) in the bank at ENE with traces of an accompanying causeway marks the original entrance. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Archaeological monitoring undertaken in 2006 in advance of development works revealed two ‘fire pits’ 0.8m apart. The larger pit (1.3m E–W; 0.7m N–S; D 0.1m) was oval-shaped with steep sides leading to a flat base. The basal fill was a thin layer of dark brown, compact, sticky clay. Above this was black, sandy clay packed with fragments of burnt and shattered stones mixed with charcoal powder. The second pit (1m E–W; 0.56m N–S; D 0.15m) was also oval-shaped. Along its base was a thin layer of charcoal while the remainder of the pit was filled by cobble-sized, angular stones, some possibly burnt, approximately two layers deep (Giacometti 2006, 8; 2009, 339). The ‘fire pits’ were interpreted as ‘the remains of an area of fulacht fia activity, either forming truncated troughs or associated pits filled with burnt stone and charcoal’ (pers. comm. A. The first phase of monitoring of a residential development in Lisnamuck and Templemichael Glebe townlands in 2006 revealed what the excavator interpreted to be a cremation pit. The pit (c. 45m; D 0.15m) was sub-oval in shape, with concave sides leading to a flattish base. It was filled with dark brown silty clay, mottled with pale brown naturally occurring subsoil, packed with charcoal and burnt bone. The material within the pit was retained for archaeo-osteological analysis. A second pit (0.7m E-W; 0.3m E-W) filled with mid-brown loose topsoil lay 0.3m to the SW. (Giacometti 2006, 7; 2009, 339). The first phase of monitoring of a residential development in 2006 revealed a mound (11.1m x 8m) of burnt stone, charcoal and burnt clay. In level, low-lying pasture. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a raised oval area (c. 38m NW-SE; c. 28m NE-SW) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse. Archaeological excavation (Site 1) in 2003 in advance of a large-scale, commercial development revealed a mound (L 16m; Wth 11.5m; D 0.46m) of charcoal-rich clay and burnt/fire-cracked stone. A large pit was situated at the W edge of the mound and the trough was concealed beneath it. The trough (L 2.15m; Wth 1.59m; D 0.2m) was rectangular with a flat bottom and a stake-hole positioned in each corner (Ó Maoldúin and Keeley 2006, 320–21). Two other fulachtaí fia (LF014-125----; LF014-129----) lie c. 77m to the SE and c. 80m to the N respectively and a burnt mound (LF014-124----) lies c. 30m to the SE. Compiled by: Patrick F. Archaeological excavation (Site 2) in 2003 in advance of a large-scale, commercial development revealed a mound (L 2.5m; Wth 1.5m; D 0.45m) of burnt stone and charcoal-rich soil. An oval pit (L 1.05m; Wth 0.75m; D 0.25m) lay at its N edge (Ó Maoldúin and Keeley 2006, 321). Archaeological excavation (Site 3) in 2003 in advance of a large-scale, commercial development revealed a charcoal-flecked deposit of burnt stones which overlay a trough and a small pit. The trough was subrectangular, with the corners marked by five stakes. The pit (L 0.7m; Wth 0.6m; D 0.42m) was oval in plan, with steep sides and a concave base (Ó Maoldúin and Keeley 2006, 321). Archaeological monitoring in relation to a proposed large-scale commercial development in 2003 resulted in the identification of a number of archaeological features. Subsequent excavations at ‘Site 6’ revealed a charcoal-rich deposit that subsequently proved to be the fill of a ditch (L 4.71m; Wth 1.12m; D 0.56m). Archaeological excavation (Site 5) in 2003 in advance of a large-scale, commercial development revealed a semicircular spread (11m x 10.5m; max. D 0.24m) of dark, loosely compacted silt containing many charcoal flecks. Centrally positioned within the arc of the spread was an oval trough (1.56m x 1.44m; D 0.36m). There were five stake-holes near the S edge of the trough and a sixth at the N edge. In addition there were two post-holes at the NW of the site (Ó Maoldúin and Keeley 2006, 320). Archaeological monitoring in relation to a proposed large-scale commercial development in 2003 resulted in the identification of a number of archaeological features. Two adjoining pits were subsequently excavated. The first revealed a spread of charcoal-enriched soil containing frequent flecks of charcoal (2.6m x 1.7m; D 0.05-0.09m) and a single sherd of post-medieval pottery. Beneath this a small, relatively straight-sided, flat-bottomed pit (0.65m x 0.4m; D 0.35m) contained black friable silt and burnt sandstone. The second subcircular pit (max. dim. 0.8m; D 0.05-0.12m), with gently sloping sides and a rounded bottom, contained dark-brown to black charcoal-enriched clay with burnt sandstone (Read 2006a, 319-20). One brunt mound (dims. 9.1m x 8.4m) consisting of a subcircular area of fire-cracked stones in a charcoal-enriched black sandy clay was outside the immediate development area and was preserved in situ under five layers, including two layers of geotextile terram (Ó Maoldúin 2004). - Ashfield House, house, 1790–1830, Regional interest, registry number 13401320, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=LF&regno=13401320. Detached three-bay two-storey over basement house, built c. 1810, having two-bay single-storey addition, c. 1860, with pitched slate roof to northwest side elevation. Now disused. Hipped natural slate roof with central rendered chimneystack aligned parallel to roof ridge. Two rooflights to northwest pitch of roof. Remains of cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted roughcast rendered walls over rubble stone construction. Pitched natural slate roof to single-storey addition having rendered chimneystack to the northwest gable end. Square-headed window openings to main block with tooled limestone sills, having six-over-one and one-over-one panes to first floor windows. Wide tripartite type square-headed window openings to the ground floor openings, now blocked. Central round-headed door opening to the main elevation (northeast) with moulded cut limestone surround, and having timber panelled double doors (doors c. 1860) with metal door goods. Fanlight over doorway, now blocked. Flight of cut stone steps to entrance flanked to either side by rendered parapet walls. Chamfered cut limestone kerbing to area around basement to entrance front (northeast). Set in own grounds to the northeast of Longford Town centre. Modern developments to grounds. Complex of outbuildings (13401321) arranged around a courtyard to the northwest of the house.
