On a low but prominent hillock in pasture. A large raised subrectangular area (83.1m ENE-WSW; 61.9m NNW-SSE) enclosed by a wide low bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.9m; H 0.4m max.), which has been substantially modified and incorporated into a field boundary. A report in 1977 (SMR file) recorded a shallow external fosse, it has since been infilled. From ENE-E-ESE a roadway skirts the monument. A break (Wth 1.5m) in the bank at SE may mark the original entrance. The ground level of the interior rises appreciably towards the centre of the monument. Compiled by: Patrick F. On a hillock in otherwise low-lying, wet pasture. A very large oval area (104.4m NW-SE; 75.9m NE-SW) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 2m; H 0.8m) with a wide, shallow, external fosse (Wth 6.5m; D 0.4m). From N-NE-ENE the bank has been levelled but the fosse is still extant. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a low outer bank. This has since been levelled and is no longer visible at ground level. A break (Wth c. 5m) in the bank at S with an accompanying causeway may mark the original entrance. The ground level of the interior rises appreciably from the perimeter to the centre of the monument. The SE quadrant is separated from the rest by a low bank of earth and stone. A smaller enclosure or annexe (LF014-047001-) adjoins the monument at W. Compiled by: Patrick F. Adjoining an enclosure (LF014-047----) at W. Marked as a circular enclosure on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map. A report in 1986 (SMR file) noted that, although largely levelled, a substantial bank of earth and stone survived from SE-S-SSW. A large quantity of displaced earth and rock had been dumped in the E half of the interior. The bank was not similar to that of the adjoining enclosure. Possibly an annexe or later feature. In low-lying pasture. A low, circular, dome-shaped mound of earth and stone (diam. at base 11.7m; H 0.6m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.1m; H 0.1-1.3m) with a shallow internal fosse (Wth 1.5m; D 0.1-0.6m). At the outer foot of the bank is a second fosse (Wth 3.3m; D 0.4-1.3m) and, beyond that, a second bank (Wth 5.8m; H 0.4-1.8m) and a third fosse (Wth 2.9m; D 0.4m). The third, or outermost, fosse is identifiable for its entire circuit. However, from NNW-E-SE the other banks and fosses have been levelled and the lines of demarcation between them are not clearly defined. The original entrance is marked by corresponding breaks (Wth 2.8m) in the banks at SSW with accompanying causeways. The site is partially encircled by modern field boundaries. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011 - LF014-050: Castle - motte and bailey, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF014-050----. At the NE end of a low, prominent, NE-SW running ridge with commanding views in all directions. In the late 1970s traces of a possible stone kerb were identified running around the base of the motte on the W side (Manning 1976, 162). Its presence suggests the motte may incorporate the site of a prehistoric burial mound, which was refortified by the Anglo-Normans (Fitzpatrick 2004, 94). The monument is traditionally held to be the inauguration place (LF014-050001-) of the O'Farralls, prior to their split into two factions c. 1516. After this date the O'Farralls (Buí) of S Annaly may have continued to use it for inauguration and assembly purposes (ibid., 65–6). The motte is an oval-shaped, high, steep-sided flat-topped mound of earth and stone (H c. 9m; dims. at base c. 34m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW). Upon its summit (19.6m NW-SE; 11.6m NE-SW) are an OS trigonometrical station and the grass-covered remains of a collapsed stone building, which may be the remains of a possible O’Farrell castle (LF014-050002-). The motte has been quarried into at SW. From W-NW-NNW it is encircled by a partially rock-cut, wide, deep fosse (Wth 5.7m; D 1.2m) with a very wide, very high external bank of earth and stone (Wth 20.6m; H 7m), which utilises the natural slope of the hill. Adjoining the motte from SSW-SW-W is a large subrectangular bailey (52.3m NE-SW; 31m NW-SE) defined by a bank, now reduced to a scarp (H 0.9 1.4m), with traces of an external fosse. There is evidence of a possible entrance gap in the centre of the bank along the W side. There is no dividing fosse between the motte and the bailey. The remains of a series of small fields with evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation, of unkown date, are visible in the field to the SSE. A ringfort (LF014-120----) lies c. 130m to the N, a moated site (LF014-051----) c. 380m to the E, and a church (LF014-058001-) and graveyard (LF014-058002-) c. 750m to the SSE. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 28 March 2012 - LF014-050001: Inauguration site, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF014-050001-. The motte and bailey (LF014-050----) is probably the location of the inauguration place of the O’Farralls (Buí), rulers of S Annaly (an area corresponding to the S and W of the modern county Longford) following the division of the O’Farrall sept and lands c. 1516 (FitzPatrick 2004, 209). The possible inauguration mound is known locally as 'Móta Uí Fhearghail' or the 'Moat of Farrell'. It may have been incorporated by the Anglo-Normans into the motte and bailey (ibid. 93 4). A possible stone castle (LF014-050002-) of 16th century date was later constructed on the summit of the motte. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 April 2012 - LF014-050002: Castle - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF014-050002-. Upon the summit of the motte and bailey (LF014-050----). The grass-covered remains of a collapsed stone building may be the remains of an O’Farrell castle of 16th century date. In 1605 Mary, lady Delvin, widow of lord Christopher, and her son sir Richard Nugent, baron of Delvin received a grant of land from the King including ‘the castle of the Moate, and 5 cartrons there; parcel of the estate of Rossey O’Farroll; valued at 13s 4d Ir. Possibly associated with the castle (LF014-050002-) c. 60m to the SW. This NW-SE running field wall (H c. 0.7m; L c. 160m) with two polygonal spear-like projecting towers (ext. dims. c. 11m N-S; c. 11m E-W) at its NW and SE ends, as indicated on the revised 1911 edition of the OS 6-inch map, may be the remains of the NE wall of a bawn. The wall is now overgrown with a hedgerow. The interior of the projecting features is filled with soil making examination impossible. No other trace of the bawn survives but it most likely was rectangular in plan with corresponding towers at the S and W angles. The hedgerow boundary extending off the SE angle of the wall, and running NNE-SSW, may mirror the line of its SE wall. Alternatively, the survivivng wall may be part of a large walled garden associated with Moatfarrell House that lies c. 340m to its WSW. Immediately to the SE and S of a motte and bailey (LF014-050001-) and castle (LF014-050002), and c. 140m to the SW of a possible bawn (LF014-050003-). This possible field system of unknown date consists of two rows of four small fields orientated NW-SE. It is visible as low degraded earthworks on aerial photographs (SMR file). Ridge and furrow cultivation is visible within the fields. In low-lying pasture. A raised rectangular area (40.4m NE-SW; 34.1m NW-SE) enclosed by a low inner bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.4m; H 0.7m) with a wide, shallow, intervening fosse (Wth 4.3m; D 0.9m) and a much-degraded, low outer bank (Wth 3.4m; H 0.7m). On the NE side the inner bank is denuded almost to the ground level of the interior and the fosse and outer bank have been levelled. A break (Wth 4.2m) in the bank in the centre of the NE side probably marks the original entrance. A motte and bailey (LF014-050----) is located c. 370m to the W. Compiled by: Patrick F. On a low hillock, at the base of a W-facing slope in pasture. Depicted as a large oval-shaped copse of trees delimited by a fence on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It consists of a large oval-shaped area (c. 95m WNW-ESE; c. 64m NNE-SSW) enclosed by two earthen banks with an intermediate fosse. The inner bank extends only from N-E-ESE (Wth 3.2m; H 0.1-0.4m) and there is no evidence that it continued for the remainder of the circuit. The wide shallow fosse (Wth 3-4.9m; D 0.1-0.6m) and narrow, low outer bank (Wth 0.6-0.8m; H 0.1-0.4m) extend for the entire circuit. The present entrance is at E but this is not original. The ground level of the interior is uneven with many hollows and rises. This is probably a landscape feature associated with 'Moatfarrell House' c. 250m ENE. Compiled by: Patrick F. From NE-E-SW the bank has been levelled but its outline is still identifiable. There is no trace of a fosse and the original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. On a prominent rise of ground with good views of the surrounding countryside in all directions. A ringfort (LF014-056----) and moated site (LF014-051----) are 180m and 495m to the N respectively, a church (LF014-058001-) and graveyard (LF014-058002-) are 230m to the SSW and a motte and bailey (LF014-050) with a stone castle (LF014-050002-) are 580m to the NNW. Known locally as 'Charlton's Folly' which was an 18th century building built by Thomas Charlton that was never finished (Farrell 1891, 285-6). Present remains consist of the ruins of a rectangular, single pile house (ext. dims. 16.6m NE-SW, 9.6m NW-SE, Wall T 1.2m - 0.6m) orientated on a NE-SW axis, standing two storeys high with an attic and a partially sunken basement. The doorway is in the centre of the SE wall at ground floor level. The walls have no batter and are built with coursed limestone rubble, the tall rectangular windows with flat arches are 18th century in date and there is a semi-circular shaped tower projecting from the centre of the NE (ext. diam. c. 4.6m) gable. In 1836 the OS Field Name Books recorded that in this townland there were 'the ruins of two castles (LF014-051002-)' (OSFNB Parish of Clonbroney, Book no. 7, 139). This building is named 'castle' on all eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. The lower courses of the walls of the NE and SW gables measure c. 1.2m thick which narrow to 0.6m at ground floor level. This is the only evidence to suggest that there may have been an earlier building on this site. However, there is no break or change in the appearance of the masonry which suggests that the walls of thius building date from the 18th century. The internal walls of the building are lined with red brick as well as the joist holes for the wooden floors of the house. There is no evidence of any features dating from the 17th century and the building has all the appearance of dating from the 18th century. It is evident that this building was never finished and became known as 'Charlton's Folly', named after Thomas Charlton of Curratown, Co. Meath who died in 1792 (Nun 1801, 47). On a SW-facing slope in pasture and centrally located within a graveyard (LF014-058002-), which may mirror the line of an ecclesiastical enclosure (LF014-058003-). This small rectangular medieval church (ext. dims. 10.15m E-W; 6.4m N-S; int. dims. 8.7m E-W; 4.9m N-S; wall T 0.75m) is constructed of roughly coursed rubble with alternating undressed quoins. The E and W gables, and the E end of the S wall survive to their original height while only the lower courses of the N wall survive. The remains of the possible doorway (Wth 1.5m) are evident at the W end of the S wall. There is a single-light, flat-headed hammer-dressed window in the centre of the E gable. An aumbry is evident at the E end of the S wall. The window embrasure in the E gable cuts across an offset that may originally have supported the beams of a wooden floor. A similar offset is visible in the W gable and two possible beam holes are visible at the E end of the S wall. A hammer-dressed quoin is incorporated into the internal face of the W gable, close to the NW angle. These features suggest that the church was subsequently remodelled. Two graveslabs are visible in the interior: one in the centre is decorated with a coat of arms; its inscription is illegible. The second graveslab is of post-medieval date and is at the E end of the church. Associated with a medieval church (LF014-058001-). This oval-shaped graveyard (63m N-S; 53m E-W) is enclosed by a stone wall. Access is a via a wrought-iron gate with cut-stone piers at ENE. Memorials date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The graveyard wall may mirror the line of an ecclesiastical enclosure (LF014-058003-). (Lennon 2005) Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan, Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 5 June 2013 - LF014-058003: Ecclesiastical enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF014-058003-. Associated with a medieval church (LF014-058001-) and graveyard (LF014-058002-). The roughly oval-shaped plan and size of the graveyard (63m N-S; 53m E-W), and the central location of the church within it, suggest the possibility that this is an early foundation. The stone wall defining the graveyard may have been constructed upon an earlier enclosing element. Compiled by: Patrick F.
