At the SE end of a hillock, surrounded by marshy wet terrain from E-S-W, c. 90m to the S of the properties facing onto the main street of the medieval borough of Granard (LF010-055----) and 500m E of the motte and bailey (LF010-080001-) and possible medieval church (LF010-055001-). A raised almost circular area (c. 50m E-W; c. 48m N-S; H 1-1.8m) enclosed from SE-SSE-S and from SW-W-N by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 3m; H 0.2-1.8m) and elsewhere defined by a scarp (H 1 1.8m). The remains of a berm (Wth 6m; D 0.15m) from SW-W appear to indicate that the hillock was cut into and levelled to create the raised platform. There is no evidence of any enclosing fosse or of the original entrance. A livestock gap is visible in the S half. The wetland siting of this monument is atypical of a ringfort. Its location in the centre of the possible medieval borough suggests that it may be the site of an Anglo-Norman manor house or the fortified residence of a high-status family of the borough. However, it is very similar morphologically to the excavated ringfort (RO022-114003-) and tower house (LF022-114011-) at Tulsk, county Roscommon (Brady 2011, 309-10). On a SW-facing slope in pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. The monument has been levelled. Apart from a slight curve in the field boundary from NNE-E-SE, which presumably mirrors its circuit, it is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. On a low rise in pasture. This low, narrow, roughly triangular-shaped limestone slab (H 1.16m; Wth 1.1m; T 0.24m) is aligned E-W. It is widest at the base where there are a number of small packing-stones. Compiled by: Patrick F. In pastureland c. 285m to the SE of motte and bailey (LF010-080001-) and c. 165m SE of the hilltop enclosure (LF010-080002-). An archaeo-geophysical survey undertaken in 2006 in advance of a large housing development to the SSW of Granard town (LF010-055----) revealed anomalies. An extensive programme of trenching was undertaken later that year to reveal if any of these were of archaeological significance. Part of an enclosure was identified measuring c. 30m x c. 23m. Although there was no dating evidence, the excavator believed that, on the basis of ‘form and nature’, there was a strong possibility that it was of archaeological significance (Moore 2010, 304). Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 6 February 2012 - LF010-132: Excavation - miscellaneous, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLF010-132----. Circa 32m to the SE of a hilltop enclosure (LF010-080----). An extensive programme of archaeological trenching undertaken in 2006, in advance of a large housing development at Granard, revealed a series of three possible post-holes contained within an area 2m x 2m. Two of the post-holes (diam. 0.2m and 0.45m) were suboval in plan and one (diam. 0.13m) was subcircular. All were filled with homogenous mid-brown silty clay clearly discernible from the surrounding boulder clay. No dating material was obtained (Moore and Kiernan 2007, 34; Moore 2010, 304). On a low hillock in pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 and 1887 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. A raised circular area (diam. c. 44m) enclosed by a much-degraded low bank of earth and stone (Wth 3m; H 0.45m max.) with a shallow external fosse (Wth 3.3m; D 0.2m). The N half has been levelled due to the construction of modern field boundaries but its outline is still identifiable. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F.
