On a gentle NW-facing slope in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 43.7m) defined by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.2m; H 0.65 max.) from NNE-E-SSW; elsewhere it has been destroyed due to quarrying. There is no trace of a fosse and the original entrance is not recognisable. A series of large quarry holes are evident within the interior. Compiled by: Patrick F. Elsewhere the bank and fosse have been levelled but their outlines are still identifiable. The original entrance is not recognisable. At S, immediately outside the rath, is a substantial quarry hole. The original entrance was not recognisable. At the centre of the interior were the remains of a house (LF015-015001-). A short distance to its NE was another possible house (LF015-015002-). On a low rise in pasture with good views in all directions. In 1396 the annals recorded an ‘attack by the Earl of March with Galls and Gaels on Clann Sheáin Í Fhearghail’ during which ‘he burned Tulach with its castle’(Ó Hinnse 1947, 175). In 1570 this was the residence of Faghne O’Farrell, also known as O’Farrell Bane’ (Farrell 1891, 28-9). In 1621 Fergus Farrall was granted ‘The castle and lands of Tully’ (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 538), which formed the manor of Tully. A castle is depicted in this townland on an early 17th-century map of Granard barony (BL, Cotton MS Augustus I.i.47). Named ‘Castle ruins’ on the OS Fair Plan, where it is depicted as a walled rectangular structure with a gap in the NE wall. A rectangular enclosure shown immediately to its SW may be an associated bawn (LF015-016002-). Of the castle, the OS Name Book noted that ‘Only some old walls remain’ (OSNB, Granard parish, 1836-7, book 11, 231). No visible surface trace survives. On a prominent hill in pasture; within a demesne. A roughly circular steep-sided mound of earth and stone (c. 32m NNW-SSE; 28.5m ENE-WSW; H c. 3.5-5m) with a relatively flat summit (9m NNW-SE; 7.5m ENE-SW). A large cresentic-shaped bailey (50.5m NW-SE; 29m NE-SW), defined by a scarp (H c. 0.2-2m), is visible from NNW-N-SE and is steepest from N-NE-E where it was cut into the side of the hill. Elsewhere it is much more poorly defined. Mature sycamore and beech trees are growing on a wide berm (Wth c. 2.5m) that was cut into the motte at a height of between c. 1.5m and c. 2m above ground level. This development was probably undertaken in the 18th or early 19th centuries as part of the landscaping of the demesne. At the SE edge of the bailey a linear ditch (L c. 8m; Wth c. 2.5m; D 0.1-0.3m) is probably a relatively modern feature. An unclassified castle (LF015-016----) lies c. 30m to the N. Associated with an unclassified castle (LF015-016----). Shown on the OS Fair Plan immediately to the SW of the castle, suggesting that it may have been an associated bawn. On the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map it is indicated as a rectangular field (c. 37m NE–SW; c. 34m NW–SE). Elsewhere the defining element is a scarp (H 0.3-0.85m). A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded an external fosse and an outer bank, neither of which is visible at ground level.
