A slight knoll was pointed out as the site of a 'fort' in 1966. The site is in average land and commands an extensive outlook. No visible remains noted at ground level. - LH017-066: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CLH017-066----. Almost square in plan with opposing semi-circular towers projecting at the W and E angles, it is built of uncoursed limestone and greywacke and is three storeys high. The angles at the N and S are rounded but are not projecting and do not contain towers. The castle has been recently pointed and has modern windows inserted, and the walls are topped by modern crenellations. The barrel vault over the ground-floor level has either been completely removed or else is well covered up. The stairwell was originally in the W tower but has now been gutted, as has the garderobe which was situated in the E tower. There is a possible exit for the garderobe where there is a relieving arch at the base of the NE face of the E tower. The original doorway was in the NW facade just to the NE of the W angle-tower. The castle has plain eighteenth-century additions on the NE and SW sides. It is visible as a circular area (diam. c. 40m) defined by a single fosse on OSI images (1995) as noted by Frank Prendergast. Situated on top of a steep-sided hill, with extensive views in all directions. This is known as ‘Lismore fort’ and is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 83m N-S; 77m E-W) defined by a scrub-covered earthen (Wth of base 6.3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.9m) separated by a fosse (Wth of base 2.5m; ext. D 0.2m) from an outer bank (Wth 4.5m; ext. H 0.5m), which only survives NW-N-ESE. There is no visible ancient entrance, although the inner bank is gapped in several places. The mound barrow (LH017-074001-) is about 13.5m SE of the centre, and the ring-barrow (LH017-073----) is c. 110m to the WSW. The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Built of roughly coursed limestone blocks and greywacke (max. dims. 14m by 3.5m) with small annexe (max. dims. 5m by 3.5m) at W side. The walls have only the lower courses surviving and no dressed stone remains in situ. The W doorway has a reveal at each side and splays outwards towards the interior. The church was partially excavated and conserved by the Louth Archaeological Society (CLAJ 1958, 128) and a number of archaeological finds were recovered, including medieval pottery, tiles, slates and stained glass (JRSAI 1967, 20-1; 1963, 127-8) from an uncertain depth inside the church. Several pieces of dressed stone are placed on the walls of the church, including window jambs of punch-dressed limestone, window tracery with diagonal tooling, and various pieces of window mullions. The size and shape of the church and some of the dressed stonework are early medieval, but there were almost certainly alterations in the fifteenth or sixteenth century.

The pit contained an inverted Cordoned Urn over a cremated deposit, that of an adult, possibly male. (Cahill and Sikora 2011, vol. 1, 287-290; Kavanagh 1976, 370, no. 40). Detached multiple-bay house, built c. 1740, now used as guest house. Irregular plan, medieval tower house, c. 1320, to centre of east elevation, three-bay two-storey wing to south and three-bay two-storey wing to north, c. 1770; projecting gable-fronted end bays to either side of three-bay two-storey central block, south elevation; multiple-bay two-storey west wing c. 1740, battlements and moulded pointed arch window surrounds added to tower house c. 1800. Pitched slate an hipped roofs, some replacement artificial slate, smooth rendered and brick chimneystacks, overhanging eaves with timber soffits, uPVC rainwater goods, some surviving cast-iron. Unpainted roughcast rendered walling, limestone base plinth, random rubble stone walling to tower house. Square-headed window openings, smooth rendered reveals, limestone sills, painted timber six-over-six sliding sash windows, pointed arch window openings to tower, smooth rendered block-and-start surround, hood-mouldings terminating in helmet stops, limestone sills, painted timber four-over-four sliding sash windows c. 1800. Square-headed door opening to south elevation, tooled ashlar limestone block-and-start surround, carved keystone detail, painted timber door with two vertical panels, plain-glazed overlight, limestone step. Stableyard to north-west comprising two-storey stone outbuildings c. 1800, ranged around a central square-plan courtyard, now in use as leisure centre; pitched slate roofs, brick chimneystacks, brick cornice to eaves, cast-iron and replacement uPVC rainwater goods, random rubble stone walling; square-headed window and door openings, block-and-start brick and ashlar limestone surrounds, painted timber three-over-three sliding sash windows, multiple pane casement window and diamond pane casement windows; variety of original and replacement painted timber vertically-sheeted doors; segmental-headed carriage openings to west and north ranges. Yard bounded by random rubble stone wall, carriage entrance to north-east with segmental-headed opening.
