This development consists of the retention and completion of refurbishment works and modifications to a derelict vernacular stone structure (formerly an estate cottage associated with the original Townley Hall Estate) for use as a dwelling house. The modification works include retention and completion of the 1.5 storey extension to the rear (west) of the structure and build-up of external walls. Proposed refurbishment and conservation works to the existing structure to include new external finish comprising a lime-based harling similar to original finishes, new timber windows and doors and new roof in traditional slate. It is also proposed to refurbish, conserve and bring back into use the existing single storey vernacular stone outbuildings and the courtyard area and associated boundary walls to the east of the structure for ancillary uses associated with the proposed use of the structure as a dwelling house. A new waste water treatment system and percolation are is also proposed along with landscaping and boundary treatment, including refurbishment and conservation of sections of existing stone wall boundary, and all associated site development works. The development works will be monitored and inspected by a suitably qualified Conservation Architect. The development also consists of the retention of gravelled access driveway providing access to the complex buildings from the public road. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Drystone-built souterrain, consisting of a passage (overall L 10.2m, Wth 1m, H 1m) which runs NNW-SSE (L 5.6m) then turns at right angles E-W (L 4.6m) and terminated in a circular beehive chamber (diam. 4m, H 2m). The passage is blocked by collapse at the SSE (CLAJ 1974, 110-11). Now inaccessible.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Roughly oval area (int. dims. c. 7m E-W, c. 5m N-S) enclosed by a bank (Wth c. 2.5-3.5m) at SW, revealed in the course of an excavation by G.D. Liversage in 1958 (JRSAI 1960, 49-60). The excavation showed that an unprepossessing low mound (LH024-007002-) contained the settlement site, which after falling into disuse had been reused for burials (see LH024-007003-, LH024-007004-, LH024-007005-). The settlement consisted of numerous stake-holes indicating an irregular tent-like structure enclosed by the bank and ditch. Other internal features included a stone-lined 'storage-bin' and 3 small pits. The irregular distribution of stake-holes led the excavator to suggest that this was a recurrent seasonal site of a semi-permanent nature. Though no datable artifacts were revealed at this level, the entire site was sealed by a clay layer above which the Neolithic material provides a firm dating horizon for the habitation layer.

Liversage in 1958 (JRSAI 1960, 49-60) revealed a Neolithic settlement (LH024-007001-) deliberately sealed by a clay layer and built up for use as a burial mound, in which three cremations were interred (see LH024-007003-, LH024-007004-, LH024-007005-).

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Beneath the megalithic tomb (LH024-008002-) excavated by G. Eogan in 1960 was a layer of occupation refuse (L 15.7m NW-SE, max. Wth 11m) in association with numerous stake-holes and hearths. This suggested to the excavator that occupation on the site was of a recurrent semi-permanent nature and that the structures revealed were probably of a tent or hut-like nature. Artifacts recovered in the course of excavation included hollow scrapers and end scrapers of flint. There were also numerous sherds of passage tomb and Sandhills Neolithic pottery, with a smaller percentage of Western Neolithic ware. (JRSAI 1963, 37-81)

This monument, excavated in 1960-1 (JRSAI 1963, 37-81), comprised a round mound, 13.5m in diameter, covering the site of a destroyed undifferentiated passage-tomb aligned NE-SW with an entrance at the NE end. Though only two orthostats survived, the sockets of the others were located. It originally consisted of sixteen uprights, seven on each side and two at the rear. The tomb measures 5.3m long and gradually widens from about 1m internally at the entrance to 1.5-1.6m at the centre, narrowing to 1.2m at the rear. The tomb was enclosed within four concentric rings of stone setting, lined in places by radial lines of stones. The mound was originally bounded by a kerb of stones, thirteen of which survived. No finds were recovered from this level. Beneath the mound was a settlement site (LH024-008001-). This is a National Monument, in state ownership: No. 529. Situated on a steep E-facing slope on the parkland of Townley Hall which is c. 250m to the S. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m E-W) defined by a single fosse is visible only on Apple Maps, which utilises a survey conducted by Bluesky International during June 2018. The enclosure is truncated at S by an E-W farm lane and is not visible in parched grass S of that feature. It could be an unmapped tree-ring, and it was first reported by Anthony Murphy. Detached three-bay single-storey stone gate lodge, built c. 1820. Tetrastyle pedimented portico to north on Greek Doric columns. Random rubble walling, dressed limestone ashlar walling to north, dressed quoins. Square-headed door opening to north, moulded stone surround, timber four-panel door. Random rubble footbridge to north with soldier coping. Set to west of gateway to south-east of Townley Hall.

Detached seven-bay two-storey over basement with attic country house, built c. 1800. Tetrastyle Greek Doric portico to east, single-storey three-bay service wing to west. Hipped slate roofs, rolled lead ridge and hips, glass dome to rotunda with replacement copper roof around dome, circular cast-iron downpipes. Tooled limestone ashlar walling, limestone plinth and string courses, denticulated cornice to wall tops east, south and north elevations. Square-headed window openings, limestone sills, painted six-over-six timber sliding sash windows; wrought-iron window guards to basement; three-over-three sliding sash windows to attic west elevation. Greek Doric portico to east, fluted columns, tooled limestone steps and platform, paired engaged fluted columns flanking square-headed door opening, timber five-panel double doors; square-headed door opening to north, painted timber panelled double doors with glass upper panels, painted timber mullioned overlight, concrete bridge to door over basement; round-headed door opening to west, dressed limestone block-and-start surround, painted timber door with glass panels; blocked door openings with Greek Doric columns to west wing. Icehouse set on estate grounds attached to Townley Hall to west of quiet laneway providing rear access to Hall.

Detached four-bay single-storey timber former school, built c. 1930, now disused. Rectangular-plan, porches to north, lean-to to south. Pitched corrugated-iron roof, timber bargeboards to north and south gables, suppressed-hipped roof to entrance porches to north, lean-to roof to covered area to south-east. Vertically sheeted timber walling. Square-headed window openings, timber sills, tripartite four-centred timber arched windows now boarded up. Porch to north, open at north-east and north-west corners, supported on square-profile columns on cast-iron bases, square-headed door openings, painted timber doors with six flat panels, concrete entrance platforms. School is situated off roadway, overgrown site.

Freestanding Board of First Fruits style former church, dated 1814, now in private domestic use. Three-stage tower to west, chancel to east, gable-fronted entrance porch to south.
