Situated in an area of mountainous bogland. The promontory fort is overlooked by higher ground inland and the view from the site is excellent. The sea is inaccessible as the site is flanked by sheer cliffs and a freshwater stream runs through the bog near the site. This well preserved promontory fort was built on a 200m long N-facing headland, cut off by a single bank and ditch about halfway along the headland at its narrowest point. This left an interior measuring 100m by 66m. The defences consist of an ill defined bank of earth 3m wide curving in towards the mainland. Outside this is an 8m wide round bottomed fosse 2.9m deep with a well defined entrance causeway crossing it 7m from the eastern cliff edge. The fosse lies 1.4m below the faint counterscarp bank and it is 1.5m wide across its base. A line of stones along the inner edge of the fosse suggests that this side at least was faced. The causeway measures 4.1m in width and was defined along its eastern edge by a low wall. A featureless interior slopes steeply to the E and only the level and sheltered northeastern corner would have been suitable for habitation. These descriptions are derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Unpublished MA thesis, National University of Ireland, Galway. In this instance the entry has been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated in an area of mountainous bogland on a N facing headland flanked by sheer cliffs on both sides. The view from the site is spectacular and it is overlooked by higher ground to the S. This site is not marked on either edition of the OS maps and had not been previously recorded. A small triangular promontory measuring 41m long by 14m wide was defended by a single bank and ditch with traces of a counterscarp bank also visible. The straight earthen bank is 3m wide and has nearly been reduced to a scarp on its inner face, where it is only 0.4m high. There is no trace of any stone revetting and a narrow sheep track is the only trace of an entrance into the interior. The external ditch is 1.65m deep and 5m wide across the top. Its base is flat and 0.8m wide. The poorly defined earthen counterscarp bank stands 1.2m above the base of the ditch. The interior slopes gently down to the west and is quite featureless. It is covered with a thin layer of bog. The area in which this site lies is one of hilly bogland with higher ground overlooking the coastline from the S. The steep cliffs and the jagged coastline make the sea inaccessible from the site. This fort was first seen from the air and had not been previously recorded. The bank was designated as a field wall on the second edition of the OS maps. A roughly triangular shaped headland measuring 44m in length and 44m in width is cut off from the mainland by a single straight bank and fosse running from cliff edge to cliff edge. The round topped earthen bank is 1.6m wide and its inner face is nearly scarped away with no revetting visible. The fosse is flat bottomed and also 1.6m wide, lying some 0.9m below the bank and 0.4m below the outer ground level. It drops sharply down to the south near the cliff edge. The defences are fairly uniform in dimensions throughout and a centrally placed stone-lined causeway can clearly be seen from the air, although it is very vague on the ground. There was no counterscarp bank. The undulating interior is quite featureless. The bog which covers the site and the surrounding area may have obliterated any internal features. These descriptions are derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Unpublished MA thesis, National University of Ireland, Galway. Situated on a large low hill in the NE of the Belmullet Peninsula (132m OD). Located on ground that slopes down gently towards the W, before reaching a small valley that runs down the S side of the hill. The surrounding area consists of unenclosed blanket bog. The signal tower has unobstructed views in all directions. The largely upstanding signal tower at Tarmon Hill (MA024-031----), Glash, Tóin na hOlltaí, located c. 20.18 kms to the SW at the SW corner of the Belmullet Peninsula, is visible in good weather. The remains of the signal tower at Benwee Head (MA004-025----), located c 11.3 kms to the NE, is now largely collapsed\demolished and cannot be seen from this site. A nineteenth-century (c. 1806) two-storey square-plan signal tower, built with roughly coursed rubble stone masonry (int. dims. c. 4.25m NE-SW x c. 4.25m NW-SE; wall H c. 1.52m). The signal tower has collapsed and only a portion of the lower courses of the ground floor level remains insitu. The walls face NW, NE, SE and SW. The remains of the signal tower are surrounded by a significant spread of rubble stone suggesting a collapse(s). The rubble also fills the interior obscuring any internal details. An intact rounded bartizan with a conical base is visible within the rubble adjacent to the W corner of the signal tower. The signal tower is located in the SE part of a rectangular enclosure (ext. dims. c. 55m NW-SE x 29m NE-SW) defined by a narrow roughly coursed rubble stone wall (Wth < 1.0m) that has largely collapsed; a limited short section of the NW side of the enclosure wall survives to a H of c. 1.5m. Along the NE side of the enclosure there is a slight shallow external ditch. The ground inside the enclosure slopes gently down towards to the NW, and a level platform has been cut into the slope at upper SE end, beyond the signal tower. A rectangular two-roomed building (int. dims. 8.4m NE-SW x 3.7m NW-SE) is located in the W corner of the enclosure. The building is defined by collapsed and partially grassed over rubble stone walls. Each room has an external entrance on the SE wall. The foundations are likely the remains of a storage building used during the occupation of the signal tower. An infilled pit is located roughly 11m NW of the signal tower, on the long axis of the enclosure. It is a slight oval hollow 1.9m in length, with a cluster of large rocks in the centre. The pit may be an infilled lime kiln or an infilled socket for a signal mast. The signal tower was part of a system of over 80 signal stations constructed by the British Board of Ordnance in the first decade of the 19th century to warn of the approach of a French invasion fleet. Signalling between sites was accomplished using a naval signal post. The system formed a continuous chain from Dublin Bay running clockwise all the way around the coast to Malin Head in County Donegal. It was abandoned by the mid-1810s when the threat of a French invasion diminished (Kerrigan 1995, 157-66).
