In pasture, located on a rise. There is a stream 150m to E. Raised earthen platform (c. 33m NE−SW; c. 36m NW-SE), originally circular but now irregular in plan, defined by a high, vertically-cut scarp (1.8-2m). The N arc retains much of the original curve of the enclosure. A C-shaped area (diam. c. 10m) has been quarried out of the platform at E−SE; this is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. The S−SW arc of the circuit has also been damaged, and the W edge is truncated by a road flanked by field fences. The rath interior is level and featureless; the perimeter is ringed with ash trees, hawthorn, blackthorn and brambles. A barn and a smaller shed stand immediately to NW of the rath; other farm buildings and a farm yard are ranged around the rath on the NE-SE side. In pasture, utilising the contours of a natural rise, with excellent views over the surrounding undulating terrain, with flat expanses of lowlying ground to SW and NE. There is a stream 50m to W. This rath is indicated as a circular enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. The remains consist of a broadly oval earthen platform (38m E−W; c. 34m N−S) defined on the S half by a high, well defined scarp (H 3m at S, 2m at NW & E) with a broad external slump, incorporating large stones in parts; the scarp has been levelled on the N half so that it merges almost seamlessly with the natural slope. An original entrance may have been at the NE, where the scarp has a gently ramped slope. The interior is level and featureless, with a single hawthorn tree, with a large boulder at its base, roughly in the centre. There is a souterrain (MA071-008001-) in the rath, with an access opening in the external face of the scarp at WNW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 June 2021 - MA071-008001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-008001-. In a rath (MA071-008). This souterrain is indicated as ‘Cave’on the W edge of the rath on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps. The souterrain is exposed in a semicircular quarried out section (4m by 4m) of the rath scarp at WNW. An opening (H 1.3m) in the vertical face of the quarried area at a depth of 0.55−0.6m below interior ground surface reveals a drystone chamber (Wth c. 2m N−S). The walls are constructed of large, rough irregular stones and are corbelled to support large stone roof lintels. The floor of the chamber appears to slope down from W to E. The chamber is largely concealed by a thicket of brambles and difficult to examine. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 June 2021 - MA071-016: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-016----. In pasture, located on an elevation overlooking a stream 50m to E. There is rising ground to SE. Oval earthen platform (61.5m NE−SW; 47.5m NW−SE) defined by a high scarp (H 3.5m at NNE and SE, 1.5m at W; Wth slope 3.5m at SE and NNE, 2m at W). The scarp is cut to the vertical, probably a relatively recent modification. Stones protrude from the scarp in a parts. Remnants of a low NNE−SSW fence/wall (Wth 1m) of earth and stone crosses the top of the scarp at W. There is a slight slump (Wth c. 2m) in the scarp at ENE, now eroded by cattle and another low area (Wth 2.6m) in the scarp at W, but is unclear if either represents and original entrance. The interior slopes down gently from the NW quadrant to W and more markedly to S and SE.
