In pasture, with rising ground immediately to W. There is a small river 250m to S. An oval embanked enclosure (c. 25m NE−SW; c. 20m NW−SE), with a field boundary abutting its NE edge, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; by the time of the 1931 edition, only the SE half of the enclosure is depicted, incorporated into field boundaries at NE and at E. The outline of a subcircular or oval area (diam. 25-28m) is barely discernible. Part of the NE arc survives as a stone-faced scarp (H 1.2m) incorporated into the line of a WNW−ESE field boundary. The E arc has been levelled to a slight stony rise, and the W−NW arc can be traced as a slight curving undulation. The interior is fairly level, and does not appear raised relative to exterior ground level. On the date of inspection, much of the enclosure was obscured beneath heaps of field clearance debis. A rath (MA071-097----) is located 60m to E. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 August 2021 - MA071-097: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-097----. In pasture, located on top of a ridge, which provides extensive views, except to NW where ground rises. Oval area (c. 49m NE−SW; 36.5m NW−SE) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.3m, at SSE). The bank has been adapted to serve as a field boundary at SW−N where it is faced externally with stone. There is a break (Wth 2.6m) in the bank at NW and another break (Wth 3.4m) at SSW. The interior has a gentle slope down from NW to S−SE; it is grassy, with a somewhat uneven, hummocky surface. Slight remnants of a NW−SE linear feature (possibly remnants of a wall/field fence) extend from the enclosing stone bank at SE across the interior towards the centre to NW, petering out at an overgrowth-covered heap of field clearance stones. A deep pit (diam. c. 8m; D 2m) has been quarried into the enclosing bank and the adjoining part of the interior at NW; the pit is partly infilled with field clearance debris. A slightly larger pit is located immediately outside the rath at NE. The rath bank is engulfed in overgrowth. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 August 2021 - MA071-098: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-098----. In lowlying pasture, located on a slight rise on the E side of a stream valley, overlooked to NE by a ridge, on which a rath (MA071-099----) is located 140m to NE. The stream lies 50m to SW. Views are quite good over the damp pasture flanking the course of the stream. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 25m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is indicated on the 1931 edition as an irregular-shaped subcircular enclosure, incorporated into field boundaries. A very slightly raised, subcircular area (24.5m N−S; 25.5m E−W) defined on the E half by intermittent remains of an earth and stone bank (Wth 0.9m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.4m, at SE), at S−W by remnants of a bank/scarp (Wth 1m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1-1.2m, at SW) adapted to serve as a field fence; and truncated at NW by a straight earth and stone field fence on a NE−SW axis. There is hint of a gap at SE, which might indicate an original entrance. The interior has low central raised spine on a NW−SE axis, from which there is a gentle fall of ground to E and a more marked slope to W. Ash trees grow on the perimeter at SE and hawthorn and blackthorn bushes and brambles on the W half. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 August 2021 - MA071-099: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA071-099----. In pasture, located on a ridge, with good views. A fall of ground to SW-W overlooks a stream valley, which is c. 200m to SW. Raised circular area (diam. 28m E−W) defined by a scarp (ext. H 1.3m at SW; 1.55m at NNW), with a short length of stony bank (L 2m; Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.45-0.5m) surviving at S. Stones are evident along the top edge of the scarp in parts and tumbled on the external slope. The scarp at NE has a broad external slump, becoming lower on the SE arc. There is a break or gap (Wth c. 2m) at ENE, partly obscured by loose stone –it may mark an entrance. At SE the scarp peters out or has been levelled to a broader gap. A slight depression (Wth 2m) immediately outside the scarp at W−NW, used by cattle as a trackway, might preserve the line of a fosse, but this is very uncertain. A field wall on a NNW−SEE axis crosses the W half of the rath; it is engulfed in hawthorn and brambles. A large pit (10m E−W; 7m N−S; D 1.6m) cuts into the S half of the interior. Blackthorn scrub engulfs the rath. There are several rabbit burrows. In undulating pasture, located on a low rise, with good but not extensive views. The Trimoge River is 200m to SW. There is a disused railway track c. 60m to E. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) is shown on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps, abutted on its NW edge by a straight NE−SW field boundary/townland boundary. It has been levelled. A low undulation preserves the outline of a roughly circular area (diam. c. 25m) with a slight scarp remaining on the SW arc. It is truncated on NW edge by a field fence. There is a raised area (diam. c. 9m) in the S half of the interior, with a telegraph pole standing on its NW edge. In rough pasture, straddling the narrow top of a low ridge on a roughly E–W axis. To N the ground falls gently to an area of wet boggy ground, beyond which the ground rises again; to S-SW there are views across a stream valley. A disused railway track lies 200m to E. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 25m), skirted on its S arc by a road, is shown on 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions, which depict a rectangular field plot (c. 40m E−W; c. 22m N−S), with trees in the interior of the field plot, and a road skirting its S side. The enclosure has been incorporated into a sub-rectangular field plot (c. 40m E–W; c. 20m N–S) and it is very difficult to trace its original form. The field plot is defined at SE−SSW, by a sunken track/road with a shallow curve, which undoubtedly respects the curve of the original enclosure; to W by a field fence, and to NW–E by a scarp (H 1m) with a shallow curve, which may also preserve the original curve of the enclosure; the scarp retains traces of stone facing but this is likely to relate its adaption to serve as a field fence. At NE–E a short section of the scarp appears to retain an internal lip, and may represent the remains of a bank (Wth c. 2.5–3m). The interior appears to have been disturbed and has several changes of level. The central area, which is somewhat raised, is crossed by a linear rise (Wth c. 1m), possibly a fence or wall, extending E–W. Dense blackthorn, particularly in the S half, impeded examination of the interior. In pasture, located at the break of slope on the SW side of a ridge top, with excellent views SE–W over a broad shallow stream valley. The Trimoge River is 370m to N. Raised circular area (c. 29m N−S; c. 24m E−W) defined by a scarp. The scarp has a broad, poorly defined slump. At NW−N it is incorporated into a later field fence and is faced with stone to a height of 1.4m. A field fence (Wth c. 2m; H 0.8-1m) encloses the rath at NE−W, respecting its curve, with an intervening gap of c. 4m; it is possible that the fence preserves the curve of an original outer bank. The rath interior has a domed profile, sloping down towards the perimeter from a raised centre. In the W half, there is a low sod-covered stony rise (L 6m; Wth c. 1.8m; H 0.3m) which curves SSE−SW in a shallow arc, and a low, sod-covered stony linear feature (Wth 2m; H 0.3m) is located 4.5m to NW, extending for several meters across the interior from SE to NW, expanding in width at its NW end. In the NE quadrant there is a low heap (4m NW−SE; 3m NE−SW; H 0.4m) of earth and stones. The significance of these features is uncertain. Hawthorn bushes grow on the enclosing field fence. Clumps of brambles and blackthorn scrub are encroaching on the interior, making examination difficult. There is a rath (MA071-106----) 100m to SE. In pasture, located on top of a ridge, close to the S side where ground falls away, giving excellent views SE–W over a broad shallow stream valley. Rising ground restricts views N−NNE. The Trimoge River is 400m to N. Raised circular area (31m N–S; 30.5m E–W) defined N–NE by a bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.7m, at NE) reduced elsewhere to a scarp (H 1.75m, at SW). The scarp is modified to serve as a field fence at SSE–NW, and is topped with a post-and-wire fence. A broad slumped gap (Wth c. 5m) in the scarp at ESE may indicate an original entrance. The interior slopes down slightly from SW and centre to E–NE. Ground surface in the raised SW quadrant has disturbed appearance, with several humps and hollows, riddled with rabbit burrows. A single large boulder is set in the ground in the SE quadrant. The lintelled opening to a souterrain (MA071-106001-) is located to W of centre. The rath interior is grassy, with several hawthorn bushes around the perimeter. There is a rath (MA071-106----) 100m to SE. In pasture, on a broad level terrace on the SW-facing slope of a ridge, overlooking a valley of boggy pasture at SW–W. There is rising ground to NE. An oval enclosure (35-40m N−S; 20-25m E−W) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, with the townland boundary coinciding with the E arc of the enclosure. It is not shown on the 1931 edition. It has been levelled; the ephemeral outline of a level area (c. 35m N−S; c. 16m E−W) is evident, bordered on the E side by a field wall engulfed in overgrowth.
