- MA038-056: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA038-056----. In pasture, located on a prominent rise in sharply undulating terrain. This rath is named ‘Rathbadoge’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a raised circular area (38m N–S; 40.9m E–W) defined by a bank of earth and stone. The bank (Wth 6.8m; int. H 1.2m; ext. H 1.6m, at E) is substantial, with a broad internal slump, particularly evident at E, and much stone protruding from the sod covering. There is a break (Wth 4m) in the bank at ENE, which may be the site of the original entrance. On the 1838 and the 1922 OS 6-inch maps an outer boundary encircles the rath, respected its curve; this has been removed, except for a short section at SW which now serves as a property boundary. A gap of 2.7m intervenes between this fence and the rath. It remains unclear whether the removed outer boundary represented a primary fosse and external bank, or merely a system of later field fences. In the SE quadrant of the interior there is a circular stony feature (diam. c. 3m) defined by an outer rim (Wth c. 1.2m; ext. H 0.4m) of partly sod-covered loose stones; it is largely obscured by overgrowth and its nature is uncertain. A concrete silage pit (12m N–S; 6.5m E–W; D 1.8m) has been inserted into the N half of the interior, truncating a section of the bank. A low platform-like rise (17m N–S; 12m E–W) lies outside the entrance, on the S side; it may be a natural feature, but could have been used as a small annex to the rath. In pasture, straddling the top of a prominent knoll, with extensive views of the surrounding rolling grassland. Lough Conn is visible to E–SE, and Nephin Mountain and the Nephin Beg range define the horizon at SW–W. This rath, named ‘Feaghmead Fort’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, consists of a raised oval area (30m E–W; 26.4m N–S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6-7m; int. H 0.3-0.5m; ext. H 1.6m at N, 2.8m at S). Overall the bank is substantial, with a broad external slump enhanced by the slope of the knoll, however, it is low and degraded on its internal face, reduced almost to a scarp at N, with stone protruding from the sod in parts. At the base of the external slope of the bank at S–W there is very shallow depression (Wth 1.4m); it is quite narrow and it is not clear if it represents an original enclosing fosse. There is an entrance gap (Wth c. 2m) in the bank at ENE, which is now dilapidated and partly blocked by large stones. The rath is built up on the S half to compensate for the natural slope. In the interior there is a slight slope down from centre to N, and a somewhat more marked slope down from centre to SE. There is a rectangular depression (3.4m N–S; 5.4m E–W; D 0.45m), with stones protruding randomly in its base, located close to the bank in the S half of the interior. In rolling pastureland, on a low rise with good views. Another ringfort (MA038-057) is visible on a knoll c. 200m to NW. This rath is named ‘Rathmoragha’ on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a slightly raised circular area (24.2m E-W; 25.6m N-S) defined by a bank (Wth 3m, int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.8m at S) of earth and stone. The bank is low and degraded, with sections at W and E reduced to a broad, low scarp. There is an E–W field fence immediately to N, and at NE a short length field fence on ENE–WSW axis cuts across the rath bank. There is another ringfort (MA038-057----) 195m to NW.
