- MA072-027: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-027----. In pasture, located at the break of slope on a rise on the top of a high ridge, with very good views in all directions. This possible rath is shown on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. 25-30m), clipped on the E arc by a road that respects the curve of the enclosure. The remains comprise a roughly D-shaped area (c. 30m N−S; 21.6m E−W), bordered on the straight side at E by the road. The W half of the enclosure is defined by a scarp (H 1m; Wth slope 2-3m) which curves SW−NW, petering out at N; the scarp is cut into a natural slope. The scarp drops to a terrace or berm (Wth 2m) from which there is another drop or scarp (H 1.2m). The NE−SE arc of the enclosure has been truncated by the road. The interior is level. In the N half there is a narrow grassed-over depression (Wth 1.5m; D 0.5m) which extends for 4.2m to NNW, then turns to WSW for 6m, expanding in width (Wth 2.4m) and ending close to the scarp at NW. Prominently located on the top of a knoll, at the N end of a N−S ridge, flanked by stream valleys, which merge at NW with another valley. The location provides good views into the valleys and over the surrounding sharply undulating landscape of small, stone-walled fields of rough, stony pasture. Much of the surrounding lands have been converted to forestry. This cashel is a National Monument (no. 561) in state ownership. It is consists of a circular area (26m N−S; c. 25m E−W) enclosed by a massive drystone wall (Wth 2m). The interior encompasses the entire flat top of the knoll, and there is a steep fall of ground immediately outside the enclosing walls at W, N and E. The exterior wall face is constructed of large, roughly rectangular limestone blocks, with massive blocks in the basal courses. It is best preserved on the E half, surviving to a height of 1.6m, rising to 2m at S. At E a pronounced batter is evident, compensating for the steep natural slope, but at S, where the slope is more gradual, the wall face is vertical. The wall is lower and less well preserved on the W half. It is partly collapsed at SW−WSW, with evidence of relatively recent rebuilding (H 0.6-0.8m), and at WNW−N only the basal courses (H 0.4m) remain in situ. The internal wall face is intact at NE (H 1m), and for short lengths at E and SE, but for most of the circuit it has collapsed to a slumped jumble of stones. The enclosing wall expands to a thickness of 3m at SE, where it is pierced by an entrance passage (Wth 1.3m exterior), which narrows toward the interior (Wth1.15m). The passage is flanked by massive stone blocks. It is unroofed, but a large slab (L2.4m; Wth 0.9m; T 0.22m), lying on the ground immediately outside the entrance, is likely to be a displaced roofing lintel. The entrance faces the spine of the ridge, leading to a more gradual slope at SE, which provides a natural access route. The interior is strewn with loose stone. In the centre there is a square structure of rough drystone construction. This appears originally to have measured c. 2m by 2m, with a height of c. 1m, but is now partly collapsed and spreads over an area of diameter c. 3m. It is of uncertain function, and appears to be of relatively recent date. It may be one of the features described as possible houses (MA072-063002-), which according a local source, were noted in the interior. In pasture, located on a rise in an undulating landscape of mixed pasture and bog. There is a derelict farmstead c. 60m to N. Circular area (int. diam. 23.4m NNW−SSE) defined by a dilapidated, partly tumbled drystone wall. The interior is not noticeably raised above exterior ground level. The exterior wall face remains largely intact (H 1.6m at W and E, 2m at NE) on the N half of the circuit. It is constructed of large and medium-sized stones in rough courses, with the largest blocks in the basal courses. The upper parts of the wall here consist of loose heaps of smaller stones, and the inner wall face has collapsed to a slumped slope (Wth c. 2.5m; H 0.9m), which drops to a broad, lower spread of loose rubble (Wth 4-5m; H 1.4m) spilling into the interior. On the S arc, the exterior wall face has collapsed to a low jumble of stone, but the inner wall face (H up to 2m) is still standing, rising proud of the exterior slump, but some sections appear to be at least partly rebuilt. Interior is flat and grass-covered. The original entrance is not clear. There is a partial break or collapsed section (Wth 4m) of wall at N, and at NW a possible gap or break (Wth c. 2m) appears to have been blocked up. An unusual flight of three small steps (Wth 0.55m) is built into the exterior wall face at NE; this may be a late feature. A trackway, bordered by a drystone wall, skirts the E half of the cashel, leading from the vernacular farmstead at N. A rectangular building, which is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, abutting the E side of the cashel has been removed. In rough, bracken-covered pasture, located on top of a rise in an undulating stony landscape. An old farm trackway, flanked by field walls, is located immediately to E. A subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 25-30m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, with a cluster of vernacular houses immediately to S. It is shown on later map editions as an irregular-shaped enclosure crossed on the E side by a N−S field wall, and incorporated into a network of small, irregular walled fields. It is also recorded on an aerial photograph (SMR file: OS 5 6851 -2; Roll 217, pr. 15). In the aerial photograph, part of the NW quadrant of the interior is enclosed by a wall, abutting the inner face of the cashel wall, and a possible field clearance cairn abuts the cashel wall at S. The western two thirds of the cashel were destroyed during land reclamation. A remnant of the original enclosing wall survives in a shallow arc (cord L 18m) at NE–SE. The wall (Wth 1.8-2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.8m) is evident as sod-covered jumble of stones, but remnants of the internal wall face remain intact in parts. Field clearance stones are heaped on the wall. Immediately to W is a later N−S field wall which cuts across the E edge of the cashel. A souterrain (MA072-087001-) is located roughly in the centre of the cashel interior. Field inspection determined that the feature consists of a circular, sunken area (int. diam. 1.6m; D 0.8m) defined by sod-covered remnants of a stone-built wall (Wth 0.6-0.7m; ext. H 0.25m). It appears to be a ruined limekiln of the 19th or 20th century, probably associated with the cultivation ridges which are visible in the fields immediately to NW and S. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an irregular-shaped enclosure, with a rectangular vernacular house immediately to SE; indicated on the 1930 edition as a roughly oval enclosure. Raised roughly oval area (28m N–S; 20m E–W) defined by a scarp (H 1.3m at W), which is incorporated at N–E into a later field wall. Remnants of drystone walling on the external face, and on top of the scarp to W appear to be the result of relatively recent modification. A gap (Wth c. 2m) in the scarp at SE may be an original entrance. The interior slopes down gently from centre to SE. There is a local tradition of a souterrain (MA072-092001-) in the rath. It is recorded on an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 685 -4; Roll 218, pr. 3). A subrectangular or polygonal enclosure (18m NE−SW; 15.7m NW−SE) defined by a drystone wall (Wth 0.8-1m; H o.8-1m). The wall is similar in size and form to adjacent field walls. There is a narrow gap (Wth 0.6m) at SSW. The interior is level and slightly sunken relative to exterior ground level, which rises naturally to N and S−SW. An internal wall encloses a small space (1.8m NE−SW; 2m NW−SE) against the inner face of the enclosing wall in the SE corner of the interior. In pasture, located on a ridge, at the break of slope on the E side, overlooking a stream valley. There are very good views along the course of the valley, especially to SE, and extensive views to N. Ground rises slightly to W and WSW. This rath is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. It has been levelled. The remains are evident as circular area (diam. c. 22.7m N−S; c. 21m E−W) defined by a curving scarp (Wth slope 5.5m; ext. H 3m) at NE−SE, which merges with the steep natural ridge slope, and elsewhere by a slight undulation representing a levelled bank or scarp. A field fence on a roughly N−S axis crosses the E edge of the rath. A portion of the rath scarp/ridge slope has been quarried away at NE. In pasture, located on top of a ridge, with a steep fall of ground into a valley immediately to NE. Good views generally; rising ground to NNW. This cairn is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Oval grass-covered raised area (11m NNE–SSW; 8m WNW-ESE) defined on the perimeter by a stone bank. The stone bank (Wth c. 2.7-.3m; int. H 0.4m at E, 1m at W; ext. H 0.8m at E, 1.25m at W) is broad and compact, composed of close-packed small and medium-sized stones. It is noticeably higher on the W side. The breadth and height of the bank reduces the internal space (diam. 3-5m) and produces a distinctive concave or dished profile. Moss and low scrub covers most of the stone bank. The nature of this cairn is uncertain; it might be the remains of a hut site or it may simply be a field clearance heap. A grass- and heather-covered subcircular mound (8.7m E−W; 9.5m N−S; H 0.55m at NW, 0.3m at E) composed of heat-shattered stones in a matrix of black, charcoal-rich soil. The mound is higher at W−NW, sloping down gently toward the stream at N. A number of flat slabs lie on the bog surface in the vicinity of the mound. In a flat expanse of wet, boggy pasture, located on the W bank of a stream in a steep-sided valley, close to the rising slope of the W side of the valley. A low, grass-covered crescent-shaped mound (5.4m E−W; 3.5m N−S) composed of heat-shattered stones in black charcoal-rich soil, enclosing a shallow hollow (Wth 1.8m E-W) on the S side. The hollow, which probably indicates the position of the trough, is marked by thick growth of rushes. This field system covers an area of c. 300m N−S by c. 340m E−W. On the 1838 OS 6-inch map this area is shown as a large open space, with an irregular area enclosed at its W limits, a few isolated rectilinear fields on the S limits, and a number of rectangular houses bordering the road which defines the N limits of the area. On the 1930 edition an irregular-shaped area (c. 170m E−W; c. 100m N−S) of rough ground, spanning the NW and centre of the area, remains open, but the remainder of the area at SW, N and E is subdivided into a series of contiguous rectangular fields. The fields are bounded the drystone field walls (Wth 0.9-1m; H 0.5-1.7m), and are dotted with field cairns (MA072-127002-). Relict cultivation ridges are evident in some of the fields, some of which appeared to pre-date the clearance cairns. The field walls and cairns appeared to be 19th-century in date; the long, narrow fields in the E half of the area are reminiscent of Land Commission ‘stripes’. Land reclamation has taken place along the S limits of the area, and most of the field divisions here have been removed (pers. comm. R. Crumlish, 2017).
