In damp, stony pasture, located on the NE bank of a NE-flowing stream. Irregular-shaped mound (9.5m NW–SE; 5.5m NE–SW; max. H 0.8m at S) composed of angular stone fragments in charcoal-rich soil. It is truncated at E by a farm track. A shallow indentation facing the stream at W may indicate the location of the trough. There is also a noticeable hollow on the NE side. The mound is obscured by gorse. Three other fulacht fia are located along the same stream valley: MA062-133004- is c. 20m to NE; MA072-107---- is c. 15m to SSE; MA072-107001- is c. 55m to SSE. In soft, boggy ground, located 10m NNE of a natural spring well (c. 0.7m N–S; c. 0.5m E–W), which is roughly defined by set stones, from which a small stream flows to NW. The well is located at the base of rocky, rising ground. A second, shallow NW-flowing stream is located 4m to NW of the fulacht fia. Kidney-shaped mound (10.8m NW–SE; 5.5m NE–SW; H 0.8m at NW, 0.30m at SE) enclosing a central depression (Wth c. 2m), which indicates the position of the trough. The depression opens to SW facing the wet ground fed by the spring well. The thin covering of peaty sod on the mound is eroding in parts, revealing the characteristic make-up of heat-shattered stone in a charcoal-rich matrix. Three other fulacht fia are located along the same stream valley: MA062-133003- is c. 20m to SE; MA072-107---- is c. 45m to SSE; MA072-107001- is c. 90m to SSE. This possible enclosure is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map or on the 25-inch plan. It is indicated on the 1930 OS 6-inch edition as an arc of hachuring (L c. 37m) curving N−SE in the SW corner of a rectangular field –it is unclear if it represented an enclosure. This area has been disturbed by quarrying and there is no evidence of an enclosure at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 30 March 2021 - MA072-031001: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-031001-. In pasture, on a low rise. A modern house is located immediately to S, and there is another 15-20m to WSW. A roughly circular area (33m N–S; 29.4m E–W) defined by a broad, low sod-covered stony rise, probably the remnants of a wall. The stone bank/wall is broadest (Wth 5-6m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1m) at E–S where it has been somewhat protected by a later property boundary that skirts the cashel at NE–S. Elsewhere it is irregular and uneven in appearance. There is a low section (Wth 4m) at NE which may indicates an original entrance. The interior is level and grassy. There is a souterrain (MA072-031002) in the SW quadrant. Immediately outside the cashel to N is a low E–W linear rise. This seems to be the remains of a field fence rather that an outer enclosing wall of the cashel. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 30 March 2021 - MA072-031002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMA072-031002-. In the SW quadrant of a cashel (MA072-031001-). The location of the souterrain is marked by a low subrectangular stony rise (3.8m NW–SE; 5.8m NE–SW), at the NW end of which there is an access hole or opening, now blocked up with stones. A second opening, also blocked up, is located 4m to NNE. According to local information, the souterrain is of drystone construction with lintel roofing. In rough pasture, straddling a rise, with good views, especially to E, over the surrounding undulating landscape of gravel hills. There is a stream 100m to E and a small lake in a hollow 120m to NW. An extensive commercial quarry is located immediately to SW. Roughly circular raised area or platform (34m NW−SE; c. 28m NE−SW) defined by a scarp (H 0.9m at N, 1.4m at S; 2m at NE). A low, slumped section (Wth 2m) of the scarp at E may be an original entrance, opening onto a slope that falls gradually toward the stream. The NW quadrant appears slightly higher than the rest of the interior, with a slope down from there to E and SE. There is a grassed-over depression (4m N−S; 2.5m E−W; D 0.5m) in the N half of the interior. The scarp is ringed with hawthorn and brambles, especially dense on the SW arc. Overgrowth is encroaching on the W half of the interior. A rath (MA072-033001-) is located 220m to NE. In pasture, located on a rise. There is a derelict farmstead at the base of the slope c. 25m to E. A gallery, oriented roughly E−W, defined on the N side by four and on the S side by five close-set upright stones or orthostats. A large stone lies at the E end and another at the W end. Another upright stone, aligned N−S, is located a few meters to S of the W end of the gallery. The gallery is surrounded by stony mound or cairn (c. 14m NE−SW; c. 8m NW−SE), now engulfed in hawthorn and brambles. A field wall skirts W side of the cairn. In rough neglected damp pasture, located on the NE bank of a stream. An old farm trackway, which crosses the stream, is located immediately to W. Low, grass-covered mound (c. 7m WNW–ESE; c. 4.7m NNE-SSW; H 0.4m), roughly kidney-shaped in plan, composed of angular heat-shattered stones and charcoal fragments in black peaty soil. There is adepression, possibly indicating the position of a trough, on the W side of the mound, facing the stream. Largely obscured by long grass and brambles. Three other fulacht fia (MA062-133003-; MA062-133004-; MA072-107001-) are located along the same stream valley, c. 15m to NNW, c. 0.45m to NW and c. 0.40m to SSE, respectively. In undulating pasture, on top of a hill; now within the area of a commercial quarry. When inspected in 1997, this monument consisted of a roughly circular sod-covered stone cairn (diam. 5m; H 0.5-0.75m), with a central hollow (diam. 2m, D 0.2m). Remnants of a slightly sunken trackway, indicated on 1838 OS map, lay immediately to SW of the cairn.
